To chuck the Avon book in the recycling.

So I know there's someone out there trying to make a living and good for them. But i don't want Avon stuff. My choices are to

a leave it out on the step where it'll likely get wet
b keep it in the house but I'm unlikely to be here when they call back
c (and this is my preference) chuck it in the recycling with the rest of the unsolicited trash.

I used to do Avon. Next time it's best to leave it out with a note saying you aren't interested, that way they should stop wasting catalogues on you (until they quit and someone else gets the territory with your road on).

I think that's the perspective that people find particularly annoying - the idea that somebody stuffing junk mail through your letterbox might see you as a waste of their catalogues.

Yes! I’m busy (she sez, Mumsnetting – but tbf I'm thumb typing while pushing a pram), why have I got to add “find a plastic bag” and “write a note” to my to do list because someone else wants to sell me lipstick?

KakiFruit · 02/10/2023 11:21

Junk mail belongs in the recycling.

LoveBluey · 02/10/2023 11:24

My Avon lady only delivers to houses that have expressed an interest, leaves the catalogue in a plastic wallet with a note saying which day she'll collect so it can be left outside with no inconvenience. I only order something about every 3 visits but I like to look the through. Not sure why all the hate.
Also find the idea of the Avon lady suing me for keeping the brochure frankly hilarious!

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 02/10/2023 11:26

@Nanaof1 - omg, that's got to be Amway!! The godfather of MLMs!
They are absolutely insane, like cult leaders. My BIL and a good friend of DH's both did it for a while and no exaggeration, they'd come out of meetings and 'dream building weekends' (!) like they'd been brainwashed. My BIL's wife ended up threatening to leave him if he didn't pack it in. Neither of them ever made any money out of it and they were both the sort of salesmen who could normally sell anything to anyone.
I remember BIL giving us a bottle of their washing up liquid to try once, along with some clothes powder. Both absolutely useless and four times the price of Fairy and Daz!!

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 02/10/2023 11:26

This reminds me of a time many years ago when someone knocked on my door asking for her Kleeneze catalogue back.
I told her I hadn't seen it. She said she knew she'd put one through every door on the road and asked if anyone else in the house might have had it. It was just me and my 1 year old living there, so no. Anyway after a few minutes arguing she gave up.
A couple of minutes later I heard a knock on the door and she was there holding up a catalogue. She said very indignantly "I found this in your recycling bin." I was a bit confused and said vaguely "Oh, right." She said "So can I take it?" I said "yeah" and closed the door.
(Most likely the catalogue was mixed in a pile of leaflets advertising take aways and nightclubs - we used to get loads living in a studenty area- and I didn't notice it when I put the whole load in the bin.)
At the time I wondered why she didn't just take the catalogue when she found it instead of knocking on my door to tell me she'd been through my bin. It's just occured to me she probably expected an apology. Oh well. I still don't think I owed her one.

Recycle bin shaming.

WotNoUserName · 02/10/2023 11:38

I chuck them straight in the recycling bin after having to step over one for weeks that I left on the doorstep as requested. I didn't ask for it, I don't want it, it's rubbish in my house that goes to the same place as the rest of the junk that gets put through my letterbox.

CCJs 😂 that's hilarious and quite obviously bollocks.

How is avon still going in the age of internet?

I don't get it

TheGoogleMum · 02/10/2023 12:03

Fair point. I meant it more as wasting your time and theirs to be honest otherwise they might keep bringing you unwanted catalogues

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 02/10/2023 12:03

JustAMinutePleass · 01/10/2023 23:32

The books belong to the rep. Expect an invoice if you recycle / destroy it - and Avon reps get support from Avon to pursue CCJs. Not worth it. Just leave it on the doorstep in a plastic bag

Wow. Never knew this. Maybe Avon should instead not charge rep for the book

How would it be proven you'd NOT left it out?

Funded by all those CCJs, it’s the new business model.

It's utter nonsense that's why you've never heard of it.

Well its ok to print catalogues when the reps have to pay for them, so you probably cover costs. Then you don't have to pay to deliver them because the reps will do that. And they will deliver the products so you only have to pay postage to the rep. And the reps aren't employees so no employee costs to pay. And actually if they don't hit enough sales you don't even have to pay commission so they are basically advertising for free. And all the time Avon can undercut their own reps by doing direct online sales or, apparently, stocking Superdrug.

It is why there is so much anger at the business model of MLMs. Sure, the person on the ground may be desperately trying to make money but the company is not. And they rely on people feeling bad for the person trying their best so they buy a hand cream which makes the company money and makes the rep think maybe they can make a go of this business, so they keep sinking money and time into their "business" hoping that one hand cream sale will take off and make their money back. And the people who recruit other reps do it because it makes them money, and they will target people who are vulnerable whether for money or friends and community.

Screamingabdabz · 02/10/2023 00:18

You can’t post your ‘property’ through other people’s doors then invoice them for it! There has to be a mutual agreement for this to be legally enforceable and both parties have definitely NOT agreed in this scenario. Once a person posts their junk through my door, it becomes my property and I’ll do what I like with it!

Exactly!

Does anyone remember the scams of the 90s when companies would send stuff to you unsolicited, then send you a bill?

I remember one for tights (nylons). They kept sending them and I contacted Consumer Affairs and they said I'd be within my rights to keep them and not pay for them!

Why should I pay return postage on something I never ordered?
Or be forced to pay for something I never ordered?

I wrote and told the company this and I never heard from them again - chancers! 😄

I think there was one involving children's books too...?

Bunnykins34 · 02/10/2023 12:23

Reps pay different amounts as theres goals we hit every quarter, so i can only answer as to what i pay for brochures (ive just hit Gold this quarter)....They come in packs of 5 and so i pay £6.20 for 4 packs of 5 brochures...31p per brochure it works out for me BUT there different levels and the more brochures a rep buys the cheaper it starts to get but not that much cheaper imo

Wow! You are good! Yes, it was Amway and they are ruthless, insane and dangerous. Vulnerable people have signed up with them, invest their money for product to sell and be stuck with stuff no one wants for those kinds of prices. It has destroyed families as they really get you to believe that you will be vacationing in Aruba 3 months a year, cruising the world and jet-setting because of all the money you and the people you rope into selling for you will be raking in. The truth is most can't afford an hour ride in a rented rowboat when it's all said and done.

I tried a couple of the products as "samples" and I bought the comb. The comb was worth it, the rest, not a chance.

Don’t stress - you didn’t know because it doesn’t happen !! A CCJ for a 50p catalogue - I think not !! As you say - how would anything be proven ? Could have blown away, someone could have taken it or it could have been eaten by wild animals !! I doubt whether it’s even provable that it was posted through the letterbox in the first place - word against word at best.

I used to put them in a plastic bag on the step with a note saying something along the lines of 'no thanks but all the best'. I did my best to keep it dryish/return it, but didn't feel too bad as I didn't actually ask for it in the first instance!

I'm surprised though that Avon still do these books, I would have thought they would have disappeared like the Argos catalogue, I wonder if Next still do their very weighty directory book, I did used to like that though.

Plus , quite simply, you can't invoice people for random unsolicited tut that you post through their door. It's a basic legal principle.

@Nanaof1 My mum got sucked into the Amway thing. The couple who recruited her remain good friends, but I do remember thinking at the time it sounded like absolute bollocks. Plus my mum didn't live in the right area to get lots of customers and her friends were just up the road and already selling to those of their mutual friends that they could.

I think DF was a bit sceptical too, but didn't say anything because mum was so keen and saw it as being something which could be "her thing" rather than "just a housewife". What a waste of a couple of grand that was.

Whether it's Amway, Mary Kay, DoTerra, Herbalife, Young Living, LuLaRoe, Younique or any other ones; they prey on people's hopes and dreams. "You do this and this will happen and then you'll do that and this will happen and you will have a career where you work only the hours you want to work! You'll make 25K/month for working 25 hours a month." Believe us, buy this, buy more....
"Oh, you couldn't sell those? Well, buy these and then after you sell those, we'll take the other back..."

It's like sleight of hand except it's your common sense and reason that gets tricked.

I'm sorry your Mom got roped into a MLM. I've had several friends over the years that have tried to break the mold of mediocrity and drive that "pink Cadillac". They never did. They never even got to sit in the back seat.

Isheabastard · 02/10/2023 14:00

This thread has reminded me that Avon do some really good stuff.

My neighbour started Avon during her divorce, and I bought a few bits.

It was brilliant for Xmas gifts when my Dd was a teenager. And some of their skin creams are remarkably good.

Minfilia · 02/10/2023 14:03

I just bin them. I didn’t ask for it and I’m not putting myself out to return it!

SleeplessinSeattle69 · 02/10/2023 14:08

You can get it all on Amazon though, and it's cheaper.
