I spent £50 on a kitchen bin

Have never owned a nice kitchen bin and for the past year at least we’ve had a plastic bag hanging on a kitchen door handle.

The new bin is stainless steel from Homesense has 2 main 20L compartments and a 5L caddy that sits inside one of the 20L compartments. It’s got 2 pedals for each side.

AIBU for spending that much on a bin

Op enjoy your bin! It's something we use every day. The Joseph one looks fabulous and I like the ones on stilts.

I bought a Brabantia bin about 12yrs and it was more than £50 then! DH thought I was crazy, but its still going strong! I'd tried the supermarket pedal bins and other cheapies which fell apart after months.

Just measure and check it will fit the slot you plan for it.

dudsville · 01/10/2023 21:16

I bought a naice bin, it lasted 17 years and still looked good, but was replaced this year as a mechanism broke. I've bought the same brand again. At this rate i will only own possibly 1 further bin in my lifetime!🤣

Minimammoth · 01/10/2023 21:17

I have just bought a similar bin, I could not be more thrilled. It makes me happy everyday (grin)

I spent a lot more than that (though not full
price) on the earlier version of this bin. It was amazing, but unfortunately the lid clip broke and they replaced (for free) with the new version. Which isn’t as good, but is still so much better than any other bin I’ve owned.

I really hated having recycling piled up and food waste on the side.

Had exactly the same experience! Only I managed to 3D print a replacement lid clip and it lives on at DS’s house.
DD has one too. She bartered the poor lad in John Lewis down to £80 for the ex display one.

I do love them though, worth every penny I think.

I bought my husband a Brabantia kitchen bin (cost £60) for Christmas twelve years ago. Still going strong. As is the bin! For the same Christmas he gave me a cashmere coat ...

Seagrassbasket · 01/10/2023 21:23

I spent more than that on a huge 2 compartment one from John Lewis. I love it. Looks fab in my kitchen. You enjoy your bin!!

The Joseph Joseph bin looks good, glad they replaced it for free for you!

@Natalie2821

i house sat for a friend who has that Joseph Joseph bin. Plus factor is the bottom part wheels out so smoothly!

however it's far too small for my liking. It drove me nuts!!

i was looking at bin& fittings for my new kitchen today. They're a ridiculous price, but I so want one inside a cupboard as my kitchen it so small & the free standing bin realky us in the way.

However they owe me nothing. 2 large, white, freestanding bins bought as a temporary measure 13 years ago!! Both still look as good as new, nice big swing bit, I removed the lid from the recycling one so it's easy to chuck stuff in. The tesco 50l bin liners for swing top bins fit perfectly. Fits loads of recycling.

i can't remember exactly how much they cost, but I guess maybe a tenner each?!

JMSA · 01/10/2023 21:27

A totally fine amount!
I can feel the bin love emanating from you Grin

Gypsum5 · 01/10/2023 21:33

Years ago I won a Brabantia Limited edition priced at £110, it was a beast of a bin & lasted me over a decade. I’m struggling now to find one as I don’t want to pay the ridiculous prices that they charge. Plus I can’t help thinking about the plastic ones that we had years ago which now still only cost around a tenner & lasted a lifetime.

Nothing will top my SimplyHuman bin. I love it and it's outrageously expensive bin liners. Enjoy. A great quality bin is so worth it

I love my SimpleHuman bin. It must be over 10 years old now and still going strong.

Purpleavocado · 01/10/2023 21:38

No! We have a ridiculously expensive Simple Human bin, which is one of the best things we bought this year.

JMSA · 01/10/2023 21:39

For anyone considering a Brabantia, I have their steel 50L one. Literally the only thing that can go wrong with it is the lid. And when mine stopped closing properly (it kept popping open), they did replace it. They were a little bit sniffy over the timings, but we got there in the end.
So good customer service is definitely a consideration when buying an expensive new bin!

Playingintheshadow · 01/10/2023 21:40

I think my made.com bin cost me around £100 but it's got a sensor so opens when you wave your hand at it!

I would have paid good money for a 3D printed replacement clip! The new bin doesn’t have the super useful recycling divider, so now I have to separate things manually rather than just pouring it into the right recycling bin. And the food waste is annoyingly much smaller, and less easy to empty.

fizznchips · 01/10/2023 21:42

I felt bad spending £125 on my bin, but I spent £15k on my kitchen so I thought it was cheap in the whole scheme of things! It's a separate bin and recycling tower, love it

Zapzep · 01/10/2023 21:42

Not really you can spend hundreds on a bin

bellac11 · 01/10/2023 21:45

I think that is cheap for a bin. I have spent a lot of money on bins over the years, they promise so much but often dont deliver so its worth it if it is good

One bugbear of mine though, the website tkmaxx for the bin, one picture of the bin, one picture!!! I find this on a lot of websites these days, no pictures of the inside, from different angles, no proper measurements, its so lazy

I have my bin inside a cupboard as I cant stand bins on show,, its a full size cupboard but its a bind finding a bin that sits inside comfortably, we have an addis plastic bin inside it but I would rather have a pedal bin but the lid wont be able to lift up inside it.

EthelMcUnready · 01/10/2023 21:46

YANBU.... I spent ages pondering a bin after our kitchen re-furb a couple of years ago (I know 😏.... it was just coming out of lockdown and too much time to think 😂).
Anyway, like you, I worried that the Brabantia/EKO ones were too expensive (but were the only ones with good reviews). And then it happened... we were on holiday, and were in John Lewis in Edinburgh... and I saw the Brabantia Bo bin for half price because it had a couple of dings in it! Well, the flipping bin is going to get a few more dents in our kitchen so I made the purchase. DH had to carry it around... But it looks nice and I've never regretted it ☺️

fetchacloth · 01/10/2023 21:53

dayofcheese · 01/10/2023 19:13

Yes I am not sure why they are so expensive. And then there's the conundrum of what to do with the old bin.

I use my old bins to store stuff in the garage. One bin has compost in it and another contains rocksalt.

friskybivalves · 01/10/2023 22:19

I am a binaholic and have found my tribe.

We have a bin that sits inside a cupboard. There is a hole cut in the worktop above with a circular wooden chopping board to fit that sits over the bin beneath and when you have done peeling onions or unwrapping, i dunno, cheese, you just sweep the whole lot of rubbish and peelings down the hole and into the bin. And then replace the wooden lid and off you go again.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 01/10/2023 22:45

I've got my eye on one from Joseph Joseph that's £200 so £50 sounds like a solid bargain!

Motorina · 01/10/2023 22:52

I used to buy homebase cheap bins and they'd last a year - maybe two - until something in the works broke and the lid wouldn't open. Then I bought a posh bin - best part of £100 a decade or more ago - and it's still doing the bin thing with no problems.

I reckon that £100 bin is, per year of use, the cheapest I've ever had.

IntoDeepBlueSea · 01/10/2023 22:55

Oh yes, a good bin may not be a thing of beauty, but it's a joy forever! After years of Argos bins, I spent on a brabantia, and it was fantastic. After a kitchen renovation we now have a pull out drawer with 2 bins in it, which I secretly hate. We only ever use the front bin for kitchen waste, which needs emptying twice as often, and the back bin for nothing because it's too small for recycling, and gets bits of tuck waste in it from the front bin. we have 70l laudry hampers for the recycling.

The thing that really annoys me is that I knew this would happen, and no one (dh, kitchen guy the usual suspects) believed me. So now it represents mansplaining, gaslighting, and the patriarchy.

I miss my brabantia every day.

Hamsterfluff · 01/10/2023 23:02

I spent £50 on a lockable Simple Human bin to keep my bin raiding labrador at bay. Worked a treat and the bin is still going strong after 5 years of almost weekly attacks.
