I spent £50 on a kitchen bin

Have never owned a nice kitchen bin and for the past year at least we’ve had a plastic bag hanging on a kitchen door handle.

The new bin is stainless steel from Homesense has 2 main 20L compartments and a 5L caddy that sits inside one of the 20L compartments. It’s got 2 pedals for each side.

AIBU for spending that much on a bin

We have the £90 Brabantia bin, it's 60l and hardly ever needs changing. It has been, if not life changing, then certainly life enhancing. It makes life so much better not having to change it all the time! We've had it for about 6 years and it's genuinely brilliant.

catskittens · 01/10/2023 19:06

Years ago i bought some kitchen canisters and a matching bread bin and cost about £60 and was very happy with my choice,on the way home i popped into my then local and dome regulars asked what i had bought

i proudly showed them and they couldnt believe how much i paid and thought it was very expensive,i pointed out that my goods would last years (actually about 8 and still perfectly fine just wanted a change) and a day in the pub would cost the same and i would get many years out of them unlike pissing it away

people can be really strange about what others buy i thought mine were a good buy obviously some didnt lol

I spent a lot more than that (though not full
price) on the earlier version of this bin. It was amazing, but unfortunately the lid clip broke and they replaced (for free) with the new version. Which isn’t as good, but is still so much better than any other bin I’ve owned.

I really hated having recycling piled up and food waste on the side.

@nonevernotever which bin.

RaininSummer · 01/10/2023 19:09

I have an expensive one but have had it for over 16 years so far which makes it quite cheap really

Poppyblush · 01/10/2023 19:10

Bins are bizarrely expensive

Yes I am not sure why they are so expensive. And then there's the conundrum of what to do with the old bin.

Ffsmakeitstop · 01/10/2023 19:15

Not a bad price but I would find that far too small. We have a 75cl rubbish bin and a smaller recycling bin but luckily we have a porch built on our kitchen so they live in there and we don't have to look at them.

FastnetLundyRockall · 01/10/2023 19:21

@3Tunes I bought this one too, in a different colour. It took a good 6 months of persuasion to get my DH to agree to joint use of birthday John Lewis vouchers but well worth it.

Inca22 · 01/10/2023 20:09

Nothing will top my SimplyHuman bin. I love it and it's outrageously expensive bin liners. Enjoy. A great quality bin is so worth it

We have this bin and the 50 litre white sacks from Tesco fit perfectly.

I bought this bin for home because we use them in a busy kitchen at work and they are still going strong after several years.

Yanbu. You were due an upgrade after sticking with the bag hanging off a handle for a year!

That's the one I've got @3Tunes though not that colour. It's about as life-changing as you could ever expect a kitchen bin to be

Nevermind31 · 01/10/2023 20:35

Bargain

nonevernotever · 01/10/2023 20:37

@RoseandVioletCreams It's the Joseph Joseph one linked by @3Tunes above

Petrarkanian · 01/10/2023 20:41

Mine cost £180 but we got it with perks at work vouchers so I don't feel so bad about it.

Inca22 · 01/10/2023 20:43

@Winter2020 good to know! Thank you!

NotAMug · 01/10/2023 20:45

I don't think £50 is that much for a decent bin really, brabantia bins are way more than that and are very popular.

Oddearslongnose · 01/10/2023 20:46

I spent a wild amount on a brabantia washing basket once. 20 years later Still going strong !

fyn · 01/10/2023 20:49

We have recently purchased the very same bin and it is excellent, a definite upgrade to a plastic bag on the door we did for ages!

Natalie2821 · 01/10/2023 20:58

The Joseph Joseph bin looks good, glad they replaced it for free for you!

We probably shouldn’t discuss the price of our bin!

Sounds like a good investment.

I have massive 'bin envy' for a number of these bins of which you all speak. I have to squeeze mine between my legs to wiggle the full bag out, which then inevitably snags on the handle and tears leaving a big bin mess all over the kitchen. I hate our bin. I wish I'd spent more on our bin!

Youcanpayit · 01/10/2023 21:08

I have the one you've got your eye on. It's been going strong for 15 years now and looks like new. I'm averaging £6 a year now so it was well worth it 🤣

Edit, my "reply to" didn't work, this was to the poster that was looking at the £90 cream 40l Brabantia
