This cannot be normal. Why do people do it and what is it called? Can they be prosecuted?

Prosecuted? 🤣

Mummy08m · 30/09/2023 23:34

Haha yanbu. A former colleague of mine actually quit her (otherwise lovely, easy and relatively well paid) job because she shared a small office with a man who was like that, especially the throat clearing. It just drove her insane.

Thelnebriati · 30/09/2023 23:37

We'll give you an alibi. You were here all the time, we watched Strictly.

Omg, I think we must be talking about the same person. They even do it on the phone and it is so loud, hurts my ear

YES

It can't be normal. What is this affliction?

FlopsSake · 30/09/2023 23:52

Is it some sort of tic? I know what you mean its annoying when youve zoned in on that. Drives you potty!

Caro678 · 30/09/2023 23:53

Tics, probably, or Tourette’s. They probably can’t help it.

Frances0911 · 30/09/2023 23:53

People with Aspergers and OCD do this.

Or Tourettes.

I know someone who habitually throat clears and he has all three of these.

Greengrassohla · 30/09/2023 23:54

Oh dear god we have one of these at work! I have arranged my days in the office specifically to avoid him.

They didn't use to do this

It can get worse over time, or flare up with stress etc.(Tourette’s)

It's hard, isn't it... no matter how patient and understanding you try to be it's a constant irritation

Do you think you could have misophonia?

RadishesForYou · 01/10/2023 00:09

That is one possibility but I don't have it with anyone else. This person is excessive in terms of constantly emitting noise.

MaryJanesonabreak · 01/10/2023 00:09

Asperger’s, drives me bonkers.

Greengrassohla · 01/10/2023 00:54

Has anyone ever tried speaking to the person who does this? Has it helped?

I don’t have misophonia - this person drives everyone crazy, but none of us ever say anything.

I have twice suggested they see a doctor re. the throat issue as it sounded as though they probably needed medical help, what if it was an underlying issue. But was dismissed as if I was joking.

Noise-cancelling headphones. Or new job/DH, depending on who it is emitting all these noises.

Titsywoo · 01/10/2023 01:07

I often clear my throat quite a bit without realising I am doing it. It's down to issues with acid reflux. My gastroenterologist points it out every time I see him 😄

@MaryJanesonabreak what are you on about?

crumblingschools · 01/10/2023 01:10

I used to work with someone who used to sing the first line of a song on repeat, drove me nuts
