To call 101 because…

A car pulled into our residential street, a man jumped out and took a photo of mine and my neighbours houses (totally unremarkable semi detached houses in a very average area, neither for sale or to let) and sped off again? Old battered car, we’ve never seen it before and I took the reg plate just in case. I don’t know what I’d hope the police would do but I feel a bit vulnerable given DP works nights & my neighbour next door is a single mum with a young child.

AIBU to call 101? Or will I just have to let it go? I don’t want to waste their time but it’s creeped me out a bit, that’s definitely what he was doing as well. I just happened to notice from the upstairs window and he was like moving his phone around and rotating it trying to capture different angles of it.

I mean I would find that weird and I guess 101 is non emergency so you wouldn't be holding anything up that is urgent. Least you can get their view and advice on it then and put mind to rest.

The police won’t do much. It could be a load of reasons, might be where he grew up.

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 30/09/2023 16:55

Yes, you'd be U and look unhinged.

The houses were only built a few years ago so not likely

I think you should use your energy to buy a doorbell camera instead, cause at least you’ll get evidence if he returns or other weird things happen

purpleme12 · 30/09/2023 16:57

Well I can see why it's odd.
However it's not illegal to take a picture of the outside of a house..

KateyCuckoo · 30/09/2023 16:57

What would you like the police to do? (Please don't say log it.)

OrangesOnlyFruit · 30/09/2023 16:58

And what crime is it you'd actually be reporting, OP?

Make a note of the registration number, the date, the time and the 'crime' and keep it handy in case anything does happen. Then get on with your life.

Cornettoninja · 30/09/2023 16:58

I think it’s fine to call 101 just to have a record on file and maybe get some advice about security.

There’s nothing else really proactive you can do I don’t think.

Hoardasurass · 30/09/2023 16:58

If you want to log it with the police use the online reporting system and that way its logged incase it later becomes relevant ɓut you aren't tieing up a call handler

Ha, this thread reminded me that I haven't seen MN "log it" post for years now. I miss them!

mynameiscalypso · 30/09/2023 16:59

I called 101 because we had two guys doing crack while sitting on our doorstep so we couldn't get out the house. They said they couldn't (or wouldn't) do anything so I can't imagine they'll do much if you call them.

Maybe he used to visit whatever was in place before the houses were built?

maybe he was actually taking a selfie on his front camera but you assumed he was using his back camera?

maybe he just thought something just looked aesthetically pleasing and wants to recreate it in his own property?

maybe he’s a delivery driver that got sent to the wrong address and he’s checking with someone that it’s the right place and was told it wasn’t so he went to the right address?

there’s loads of possibilities

Shuddurp.
They'll all start again now.
Mind you, there have been a few recently about people daring to walk in forests without dogs. (and therefore obviously pervs and homicidal maniacs)

noticetomarry · 30/09/2023 17:02

Thanks everyone, I thought it would be a waste of time really otherwise I’d have just called. I know there’s nothing they can do. It is a bit weird but oh well. Mustn’t let hormones and anxiety get the better of me.

Nah, I'd welcome some "log it" posts for nostalgia.

I saw "dragon butter" mentioned today which made me feel all fuzzy and 2010-ish 😂

Timeforchangeithink · 30/09/2023 17:32

I wouldn't feel the need to phone police and tbh if it was someone with a dubious reason they're not likely to do it in full daylight on a Saturday afternoon when probably the whole street is at home.

Zola1 · 30/09/2023 17:33

If you really really must report this, do it online to avoid wasting call handlers time.

catin8oots · 30/09/2023 17:35

Blimey what do you expect them to do?

I've reported serious domestic abuse several times and they have done sweet FA

Gnomegnomegnome · 30/09/2023 17:38

Maybe that playing Pokémon thing? I don’t know if people still do that or if it would look like they were taking a photo?

Maybe give advice or suggest what it might be about?

As long as you’re not dialling 999, it’s not a problem. You can always use the online form or online chat if you feel bad about bothering a busy call handler

CurlewKate · 30/09/2023 18:52

Could be Pokémon? Some people are still playing. My ds takes pictures of random things for album covers-it might have been him!
