To leave this role?

I started a new job in July (civil service SEO) & pretty much every week I have a crisis of confidence and think I need to leave. Is it just the setting in period or is something amiss?

here are my reasons:
-no training, expected to self learn to expert standard
-following on, having to present my subject matter to directors and field challenging situations with no prep/knowledge/context. Feels embarrassing
-don’t have correct tools, having to constantly negotiate and essentially beg for training others have got
-managing difficult people who applied for my role & were unsuccessful and taking it out on me
-insubordination, undermining
-incident of racism from one of these people to someone else, which everyone wants me to brush under the rug to protect the perpetrator’s mental health
-absent line management who just pay lip service

essentially I have to navigate a difficult culture with no support from anyone, which then soaks up all my time to focus on the technical aspects. Aibu to want to cut my losses or can I salvage it?

Sounds awful to be honest. It’s early days though isn’t it?

Im a year and a bit down the line - of a job that I got bad feeling about when they offered it to me (I asked them about training and onboarding and their answer was very loose- not very reassuring). Tbh I really like what the actual job is but I still very often feel unsupported and like I don’t know anywhere near enough. I wish I’d gone with my gut and not accepted it.

maybe yours is salvageable but, like mine, it sounds like a cultural problem and that won’t change anytime soon will it? The brushing racism under the carpet is a huge red flag.

I keep giving myself mini deadlines to see if it’s got better- so at first it was 6 months , then 9 months, a year- now I’m a year and 4 months in and I have little motivation, I’ve Little confidence, I’ve lost my oomph, I enjoy my off time less. My latest deadline was giving it til end of October so I am hoping I will stick to this one!

anyway YANBU it sounds awful you just have to decide if it’s bearable etc x

I’ve been offered SEO role due to start soon and this makes me nervous! The role uses a particular tool which I havnt used in over a year so would definitely need brushing up on this! However if you have said your left to your own devices I’m feeling nervous about starting now

I think I’m just going to start applying for jobs again which is a shame!

at work there’s a couple of high profile but easy tasks I can get on with, I’m literally going to do the bare minimum on those and get the visibility/praise but spend my time job hunting!

Hang in there and then try to transfer to another dept, not all CS employers are the same. I work for a good one but know it can be really different elsewhere.

Good luck.
