The Guardian

Though Jeremy Hunt said the government was “not in a position” to contemplate a decrease in tax immediately, he said the welfare budget could be hit further down the line to foot the bill.

He told the Times that 100,000 people a year were “moving off work into benefits without any obligation to look for work” – a sign he said showed the system was not working.

The welfare system had to be a “mix of carrot and stick”, with more assistance required to help people find work, given there was “no shortage of jobs”, he added."

Funny how 'carrot and stick' always equates to 'more stick'.

UK welfare budget could be cut to pave way for tax cuts, says Jeremy Hunt

It is pretty rude though !

BIossomtoes · 30/09/2023 19:22

😂😂😂😂😂😂

Its going to be rather satisfying to watch the country turn on people with your "thinking".

Its been a long time coming.

There had been far too much encouragement over the last 15 years of poorly educated "views" to the detriment of the country as a whole.

I agree it is "rude"

But older people like her have shown a complete inability to deal.with reality.

They honestly do not care if the country gets poorer as long as their group (pensioners) gets their money.

How else are you supposed to respond.to that?

Trust.me...I have tried many times.to explain things to her on here

Never made a dent in her "thinking".

God, the rampant ageism is getting boring as is the lofty assertion of being so much brighter are so than the rest of us.

Nobody cares about your excuses.

Nobody

The math is actually pretty simple. Ridiculously so now.

And unlike you folks, I am an expert in pensioms and long term.finance.

And I have told you folks hundreds of times

You are destroying the UK economy

No ifs, no buts, no maybes.

IClaudine · 30/09/2023 19:35

How am I destroying the economy?

ilovesooty · 30/09/2023 19:35

I am getting pretty tired of the persistent rudeness, ageism and lofty patronising comments I've seen in the last few posts.

Yes, you have told us ad nauseum.

kirbykirby · 30/09/2023 19:36

The biggest cost is surely housing and housing benefits. If you put a floor on the amount that is paid to landlords then the bill keeps going up, the rich get houses paid for by the taxpayer and house prices keep rising. They need to reduce housing benefit so that those that don't get any help with their rent are not subsidising high rents and house prices whilst pricing themselves out of housing. Lower house prices and rents would be beneficial for the country in so many ways. But many MP's are landlords or have a vested interest in keeping housing expensive, so unlikely to happen.

Pensions
Healthcare
Social Care

Over 50% of public spending

Again, this is so basic as to be laughable.

Not sustainable in any way.

Wake up.

IClaudine · 30/09/2023 19:37

Come on @MNHQ, why are you continually allowing Gobbers free rein to be ageist and insulting?

Yes. Because I do this for a living.

Unlike you.

And people like yourself prefer to believe in fairy tales told by politicians over the professionals (actuaries)

You only have yourselves to blame now

greengreengrass25 · 30/09/2023 19:39

My bil desperately wants to work but he needs support to get him back into work but you only get this if you are on UC.

Should be for everyone surely

The ageism label needs to stop being thrown around. It helps no-one. Highlighting publicly available statistics which the government is now panicking over is not ageism. Are the ONS ageist or ableist for raising alarm over the highest state dependency on record - now the majority? Or are the being responsible, highlighting these issues so the government can look at how it’s all being paid for?

Fact doesn’t equate to ageism no matter how much it makes you uncomfortable. Throw around far too much on here whilst people stick their fingers in their ears, “lalalalalala I can’t hear you.”

loislovesstewie · 30/09/2023 19:40

When someone is persistently ageist I see no problem in saying so.

I agree that HB is an issue but its cost (£26bn) is nowhere near as bad as State Pension (£120bn) and Healthcare (£200bn+).

Just pensioners or everyone?

The over 55s are responsible for 80% of NHS spending.

They are (by far) the most prodigious users of healthcare.
