Our 4yo has started acting up at bedtime. Doesn’t get to sleep until 10pm usually. Also gets up really early (5am most days). Aibu to buy melatonin gummies to get her sleep back on track?

I know its frustrating. But drugging a 4 year old to get them to sleep is going to make your life much harder in the long run. Have you spoken to your GP about it?

Are they not prescription only in UK? Or are you from somewhere you can buy them OTC?

Sprinkles211 · 29/09/2023 17:24

Please don't in the UK you can only get melatonin prescribed by a consultant paediatrician in a hospital.

Get them from where? Perhaps a good firm bedtime routine and boundaries instead of meds. I have melatonin for my son. It doesn’t help him get to sleep but helps him stay asleep. I still have a robust bedtime routine for him. Despite ‘drugging’ him it is prescribed by a dr and works well when I can get him to take them. Took me years to be prescribed, being up with him in the night etc I was v tired for a long time.

Your child has to learn how to sleep.

Drugs are the best answer for you, not for her.

If you're in the UK it's unlikely to be a possibility. If you are elsewhere, it shouldn't be the first option. Try other things first.

I wouldn't mess with childrens hormonal balance unless prescribed by a consultant.

Minfilia · 29/09/2023 17:47

Of course you shouldn’t drug your child!!
