Am I right? Had wine so I don't know!

My friend is Romanian. We're discussing working hours & which countries have the longet/shortest working hours. I got some stats up (reliable source) which listed average weekly working hours. UK is 41, Romania is 40.1. I noted the UK was only 0.9 higher than Romania. Well, he's gone ape shit over this. It's apparently wrong because he knows his mum & sister both work 40 hours & the UK contracts are 37 hours. I can't get it through his head that this is not based on 'contracts', it's actual people reporting the hours they actually work.

He's THAT indignant that he's right, he's genuinely taken offence. It's got me second guessing myself. Am I wrong here? I have had wine so it's possible.

YABU - You're wrong
YANBU - You're right

Why do either of you even care.

tealandteal · 28/09/2023 21:25

That’s just the average across all the country. In my current role I am contracted to work 37.5 hours, don’t work any extra. In my new previous role I was contracted for 42. There’s no set national contracted hours.

This

Baffling

Hellocatshome · 28/09/2023 21:27

Change the topic and don't drink wine if it makes you both argue over stupid things.

CrochetCuddles · 28/09/2023 21:43

I dont think it matters who is right or wrong tbh, I'd be ending a friendship with someone who goes "apeshit" because I have different thought to them. That's a pretty extreme reaction and alcohol doesn't excuse it.

Justmuddlingalong · 28/09/2023 21:47

He's obviously easily offended, prone to overreaction and a bit of a knob by the sounds of it.

Cupofteafortwo · 28/09/2023 21:48

I’m contracted 37.5 hours per week. Today I’ve worked from 8am and now I’ve shut my laptop as I want to get a project finished. Will probably do 50 hours this week. Away all next week working. Mon-fri. Week after will probably do 20 hours. Swings and roundabouts

'apeshit' is meaningless it's just the OP's description and she's not sober either.
He could simply be refusing to agree with her.

YABU (and so is he) for arguing over silly things when drunk anyway. We also don't know what the 'longest working hours' mean. Contractually or actual hours worked? For what sorts of jobs?

Adreno · 28/09/2023 21:50

Surely you have something better to discuss?

PinkRoses1245 · 28/09/2023 21:50

Sounds like a fun night… hardly

maddiemookins16mum · 28/09/2023 21:50

Sounds possibly as if something has got ‘lost in translation’ ? (that and the 2 bottles of Sav Blanc).

TrailingLoellia · 28/09/2023 21:52

Well in the U.K. many need two jobs to survive. So higher average than Romania isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Aquamarine1029 · 28/09/2023 21:52

He's a friend? Are you sure?

Vinrouge4 · 28/09/2023 21:55

Blimey, what a lot of drama about nothing.

Well I'd presume any study worth its salt specifies the job.
Many professional jobs that aren't shift based have standard hours but also a clause in the contract saying that they are expected to work according to the 'needs of the business'. And also, the employee has to opt out of the working time directive.
Like me!
So actually.. when people say 'you're paid to work X hours' you're not really.
Contract says 37 hours but I work more. I don't mind because I can get the time back when less busy also earn an ok wage. But if I was earning close to NMW then no way! Work to rule.

It sounds like the wine has convinced you that this is debate worthy in the first place.
