To think the Peter Rabbit animation needs to focus more on Peter’s trauma and the existential body horror of his father being put in the pie?

DD loves a bit of Peter Rabbit on CBeebies and it’s all very jolly but the traumatic backstory and its impact on Peter’s behaviour never gets addressed. We’re about three series in and it’s still merry tales of stealing veg, banging rock music interludes, and implausible chases.

I also think they’ve failed to challenge the stereotype / trope that all foxes are villainous.

If it was aimed at older children then yes I fully agree. I don’t know why he continues to enter that garden.

However, it’s aimed at young children and it’s an adaption of the stories. It’s trying to be light hearted, a story about friendship, problem solving and having a hero type character.

It would be too heavy going for some of the younger ones if it delved into the deep background.

Put on Puffin Rock instead. The fox on there is nice. I love Puffin Rock.

I made the mistake of reading the original books to my 3 year old. Her little face when one of the mothers smacks her naughty bunnies 😮We had to have a conversation about how that mummy was very naughty. Not quite the relaxing bedtime read I thought I remembered.

It is a dreadful adaptation. Why do they shout, ‘Peeter Raabiiit’ like they are in Guns n Roses?

How can you start with those lovely water colour illustrations and end with that.

Fistralstorm · 27/09/2023 20:33

Damn, I'm currently writing a book and the fox character is a mass murderer 🙈

NotMyDayJob · 27/09/2023 20:36

It was only about six months ago that I realised they weren't singing "rabbits are prey, rabbits are prey, rabbits are prey" and only when I said to my DH that it seemed a bit dark for a kids show. In my defence I am hard of hearing

littlemousebigcheese · 27/09/2023 20:40

God I hate Peter rabbit! Thieving bastard who is mean to cats and just a twat

Laiste · 27/09/2023 20:40

Yeah, youngest is grown out of it now, but when it was on i was always a bit 🤔 about the justification of stealing and Peter constantly trying to live up to the hype of his amazing dead father.

The sheer panic when he loses the diary in one episode!

Laiste · 27/09/2023 20:41

it's still better than Bing though ....

But I think Makka Pakka looks shifty with those stones, never mind what on earth what the writers inhaled to write it

JumalanTerve · 21/03/2024 07:12

Hands down the most infuriating children's character. I also don't understand why all the supporting cast are named like Prohibition-era gangsters

Ah, old thread. Point still stands

Bing can get in the bin. He rneeds to stop whinging and start practicing how to use irregular verbs.

Oops! I didn't notice it was old either. Off to have more coffee...
