Sorry just to say - both my parents learned Latin and are 'old school'

And context is my Dad thought a visit to an aquarium was beneath him!

@dcsp - ah I didn't realise this!! Every day's a school day!!

There was comment when it was invented that the word was 1/2 latin - vision and half greek - tele.

So it sort of means literally watching over a distance, at the same time as being complete nonsense.

Anewest · 27/09/2023 09:24

Don't forget "phenomena"!

CorryAndwes · 27/09/2023 09:32

@Anewest** ah yes of course!!! Grin

Tele makes me think of telehandler, so I would be very confused as to why you would be watching a forklift in your house 😂

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 27/09/2023 10:05

'palladia!' Grin

I'm trying hard to conceive of a situation where anyone might have to refer to more than one palladium!

YANBU. See also 'gaol'. It's over. Say goodbye.

KimberleyClark · 27/09/2023 11:51

My pet hate is people who talk about a bacteria or a phenomena or a criteria. They are plurals. The singulars are bacterium, phenomenon and criterion.

I think there's a difference.

"gaol" is a seriously old-fashioned spelling, but still one of the correct ones.

"tele" is just plain wrong.

‘Telleh’ is how I pronounce that.

I think people who spell it tele are also the same people who insist using an apostrophe before phone - ‘phone. I do love a bit of SPAG but tele and ‘phone are just sooooooo pedantic and holier than thou 😄

Absolutely this.

Don't forget "phenomena"!

That’s normal though - surely nobody says “phenomenons!”

I bet you it's the same oddballs defiantly using both.

I think that poster was maybe annoyed by people using 'phenomena' as if it were singular?

"This is not a new phenomena" 🙂

CorryAndwes · 29/09/2023 06:18

I know - I can't either @TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth!!

On New Years' Day - 2003 - I said that my main missions this year was to visit more :

Musea
Aquaria
Collosea
Stadia
Mausolea

My Dad who's Oxbridge educated and very 'RP' said - yes - and I'm going to develop 'nausea' Grin

I agree - gaol is awful even though technically correct!
