To not stay in all day

What's the general etiquette around going out with covid nowadays?

I have what would be considered a mild cold but my friend had a spare test (at her request as she has just had it and was conscious about having more time off work) and it turned out to be covid. If i hadnt have tested I wouldn't even think twice about going out as I have a stuffy nose! My children are 2 and 6 months, I can't stay in all day. Can I go for a walk in the park? Can I go to the coffee van? Pop to corner shop to get milk? Sit on outside seating area in starbucks? What's acceptable nowadays?!

I've just had it for the second time in 18 months, and it definitely wasn't "just a cold" for me and mine. We're in our 70's..
Don't be so bloody selfish, some of us become really ill with it.

Just out of curiosity would you say the same thing to someone who had a cold but hadn't tested? I only did out of pure chance. Do you self isolate when you have a cold?

You know it's not a cold though don't you @sadlittlelifejane ?

How would you feel about someone who had sex with you knowing they had a sexually transmitted disease versus someone who didn't know?

It's different isn't it?

No it's not. It's like preaching to someone with diagnosed herpes how unfair it is for them to have sex with people without telling them, whilst at the same time harbouring some strange ulcers which may or may not be herpes but its OK because no diagnosis.

With a cold, you know you COULD have covid. You just haven't tested. I don't think it's fair for anyone who doesn't test/self isolate when they have even minor cold symptoms to call anyone else selfish/cunty or any other comments. It's very hypocritical.

I was supposed to go to a meeting today, but the agenda email had a covid policy attached which basically said "don't come if you've got covid symptoms, test or not"

I rang my counterpart who said that they'd been really hammered by covid staff illness two winters running so now they "play cautious with covid to try and keep the bloody place open"

verdantverdure · 27/09/2023 17:28

I just read that in America they're giving out four free tests to anyone who wants them again to try and reduce the covid damage to their economy.

Cabincat · 27/09/2023 19:00

A lot of public facing jobs including public transport and shop workers now tell you to go in and work if you have covid and if you are so rough with it you have to take time off this involves potentially no sick pay and being put on attendance procedures etc so you are told to treat it as a cold unless you are too Ill to go in and that is the official line in companies . This is why many do not bother even testing and if you are in a vulnerable category you need to be extra careful

Yeah my auntie said there was a girl on the bus the other day coughing up blood and saying she had to go on or she wouldn't get paid.

Costalife · 27/09/2023 19:35

*I thought we might have learned a lesson after Covid, but apparently not. People are selfish. They have no idea when they spread the virus who it may affect or how badly it may affect them. It may kill them.

This is why covid will never disappear.*

No it's not why. Do people still believe this. Do people still believe it can just disappear.

I agree mostly. Although it depends on the cold. If I didn't go out every time I had the sniffles I wouldn't go out, toddlers do that to you!

Though I hate the culture of still going into work when you are feeling rubbish and germy.

I don’t test because it’s a non thing now in my opinion. We were brainwashed to be terrified! Carry on as normal.

gamerchick · 27/09/2023 20:02

So many people who have the luxury of staying at home....🙄always the same.

Letitgonowgr · 27/09/2023 20:02

wow!

Doone22 · 27/09/2023 20:50

It's not correct that there are any restrictions around where you can go and who you can see any more.
Just stick to good manners and avoid all elderly or ill people. Whether it's a cold or flu or covid I never visit old people when I'll nor any of my susceptible friends.

jannier · 27/09/2023 23:01

The current Covid guidance.....advice not a must as the economy can't afford to pay you not because it is just like any other virus

To not stay in all day
Katy123456 · 27/09/2023 23:09

I wouldn't have tested but would still be out and about, would avoid indoor busy places.

SuperNewMe · 27/09/2023 23:54

That advice though - to stay at home for 5 days.
I wouldn't get paid for them.
I would stay at home if I knew I had it as I can afford to and it's also the right thing to do, but can see why people don't or can't.
Not everyone will be able to afford to do that.

SuperNewMe · 27/09/2023 23:55

That was in response to @jannier 's post

@Bertiesmum3 I'm afraid you're the one who has been brainwashed into thinking COVID is "just a cold and masks don't work". I'm a scientist. I follow the science.

🤣🤣🤣

Even our local surgery recommends getting out and about for fresh air!!

AussieManque · 28/09/2023 09:30

@Bertiesmum3what a non sequitur

NHS Advice:
What to do if you have symptoms of COVID-19You may be able to look after yourself at home if you have COVID-19 or symptoms of COVID-19.
Try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people if you or your child have symptoms and either:

  • have a high temperature
  • do not feel well enough to go to work, school, childcare, or do your normal activities
You can go back to your normal activities when you feel better or do not have a high temperature. If your child has mild symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat or mild cough, and they feel well enough, they can go to school or childcare.

So basically you are free to do whatever so long as you are not really ill or have a high temperature

My local surgery is recommending you go out and get fresh air

So many posters who don't care about passing it to the vulnerable.

Do the decent thing and stay away from people.

People working in nursing homes and are told to still work even if ill

Sorry to hear, that's really tough! Especially as I imagine you are exposed to it so often with young kids around. Do you test if you have cold symptoms?
