To not stay in all day

What's the general etiquette around going out with covid nowadays?

I have what would be considered a mild cold but my friend had a spare test (at her request as she has just had it and was conscious about having more time off work) and it turned out to be covid. If i hadnt have tested I wouldn't even think twice about going out as I have a stuffy nose! My children are 2 and 6 months, I can't stay in all day. Can I go for a walk in the park? Can I go to the coffee van? Pop to corner shop to get milk? Sit on outside seating area in starbucks? What's acceptable nowadays?!

If you did any sort of research you would know that people who were in end of life care due to other illnesses had covid listed on their death certificate. Freedom of information act requests repeatedly show that in almost every NHS Trust in this country fewer than 10 people died with covid listed did not have co-morbidities.

It was a cash / power grab and everyone fell for it. If people's lives were so important how come kids I know with T1 diabetes and cystic fibrosis had their regular appointments cancelled for several years. Wake up and smell the corruption- if covid was deadly would parliament been partying through it!

Parliament didn't party.

Our shit government did.

Shit government is also responsible for the disruption to people's treatment.

Nothing you say aligns with the facts. I don't know where you get this nonsense from.

verdantverdure · 26/09/2023 15:36

Our local little shop has just put its sign back up saying Please don't come in with covid. We are a family business and can't keep the shop open if we're ill.

I wouldn’t go out while knowingly Covid positive, unless it was absolutely essential. I’d wear an FFP3 respirator if I had to.

🤣🤣
really?!!!
covid is now no different to a common cold/ flu!!
carry on like normal, no need to be wearing masks, masks don’t work anyway,

AussieManque · 26/09/2023 15:39

Please wear a properly fitting mask if around others. Including your children. Reducing the overall viral load can affect the severity of illness if they haven't already caught it from you. Ventilate your home thoroughly and avoid going to busy places, outdoor transmission is very much possible too.

On average you will shed virus for 8 days so avoid others as long as you can:

"olfactory researcher Gregory Lane and colleagues analyzed over 300 breath samples from 43 people with COVID-19, following them for nearly three weeks. Levels varied between and within individuals, but some people shed a lot, releasing over 800 copies of viral RNA per minute at times.
On average, participants breathed out 80 copies per minute for a full eight days after symptoms began, the team reports" https://www.sciencenews.org/article/coronavirus-infected-covid-19-exhale

Quantity of SARS-CoV-2 RNA copies exhaled per minute during natural breathing over the course of COVID-19 infection

SARS-CoV-2 is spread through exhaled breath of infected individuals. A fundamental question in understanding transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is how much virus an individual is exhaling into the environment while they breathe, over the course of their infect...

@Bertiesmum3 please read this (from Australia but no different to UK) and tell me it's like a cold:

Honestly you should be doing everything in your power to protect your children from getting infected with it over and over.

Nope. I work with very vulnerable children and am expected to go to work as normal, though with a mask

I believe covid boosters for the vulnerable begin this week in the several parts of the country that I have vulnerable relatives.

(And take two weeks to have full effect)

Boosters started in my area a few weeks ago, I've already had mine. I would assume though, that if you're vulnerable relatives haven't had it yet and are concerned about catching it then they are wearing properly fitting protective masks to protect themselves whilst out and about, instead of relying on others who are just going about their lives and probably aren't even thinking about covid.

lemonraincoat · 26/09/2023 16:03

I thought we might have learned a lesson after Covid, but apparently not. People are selfish. They have no idea when they spread the virus who it may affect or how badly it may affect them. It may kill them.

This is why covid will never disappear.

RoseMartha · 26/09/2023 16:09

In your situation I would go out for walks to give myself and my dc fresh air and exercise but I would avoid coffee shops and town centre and the dentist and toddler groups etc.

RonaLisa · 26/09/2023 16:09

Mistake 1 was to test.

Mistake 2 was to worry about what to do as a result of the test being positive.

If you feel ok, go out. If you feel too ill to go out, stay at home.

Just as you would with any other illness.

WOW. So much kindness and consideration in the world. Not.

SistersNotCisters · 26/09/2023 16:19

We're not supposed to be testing anymore. I work in a field where covid was (and is) a very serious issue and has caused the death of service users and we have been told by management we are not to test ourselves or service users if they display symptoms. We call the doctors or paramedics if required but that applies to all illnesses of course.

FoodFann · 26/09/2023 16:22

I wouldn’t want to give the strain of covid I had last week, to my worst enemy. It might be mild to you, but to others, it might be horrific. Personally, I would not come into contact with anyone, and would wear gloves to touch gates etc. I think walking in a secluded park/forest is acceptable if you can truly avoid everyone.

SallyWD · 26/09/2023 16:31

I would stay in personally, perhaps I might go out for a walk in the fresh air but definitely keep my distance from people. I would absolutely not go indoors anywhere. It spreads so easily indoors. I get furstrated when people think you can do whatever you like with Covid. I know so many people still suffering long Covid. My best friend got it 15 months ago. She was early 40s and very fit and healthy. She now has to use a mobility scooter and has lost her job. It might feel like a mild cold to many but for others it's devastating.

Motomum23 · 26/09/2023 14:55

I can't believe all these replies... even NHS nurses are told to go into work with covid.. the tests are about as reliable as a chocolate teapot, you aren't going to kill anyone as there's so many good treatments now. Anyway aren't all you scaremongers protected from your multiple vaccines!?!?

You would kill someone with severe immunosuppressive illnesses like COPD, cancer, arthritis, transplant patients etc. Let alone multiple conditions but I guess that's okay because of value to society etc.

I can't believe people are still in denial

FromEden · 26/09/2023 19:33

I would feel so guilty if I made someone seriously ill.

You shouldn't. It's not a moral failing to get sick or to pass on a virus, it's a part of being a human. No one ever wracked themselves with guilt before about passing on colds, flus or other illnesses which may very well kill a vulnerable person somewhere down the chain of transmission. If the OPs test was negative for covid, no one would suggest she doesn't leave the house for a week, even though she is sick. COVID is now at the level of a cold so the same should apply

BCBird · 26/09/2023 19:53

It is not a normal cold for everyone .

BCBird · 26/09/2023 20:03

Sometimes people are getting a used for wearing a mask. A mask wearing supermarket worker told me this. Madness

Government has stated to carry on just like you do with a common cold!
you don’t even test no more!

@Motomum23 you might be interested to know that COVID significantly increases the risk of type 1 diabetes diagnoses. Colds don't. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2796649

@Bertiesmum3 I would have less blind faith in the government. They are wrong about many things, for example their insistance in washing hands to avoid catching an airborne disease. There are new papers every day showing how damaging to the body COVID is. Are you even aware that it increases your chance of heart attack, stoke, type 1 diabetes, brain damage following infection? Is the government telling you?

SARS-CoV-2 Infection and New-Onset Type 1 Diabetes Among Pediatric Patients

This cohort study assesses the association of COVID-19 with new-onset type 1 diabetes among pediatric patients.

Wait. You're shifting responsibility from those who are sick to those who are vulnerable to the illness itself? Why is it so difficult for the sick person - if they know they are ill - to take some steps to limit the spread of their contagious illness?

MintJulia · 27/09/2023 05:24

I think at this point, I'd happily go for a walk or for an outdoor coffee, but stay away from GPs, hospitals and care homes, and I'd warn any one coming to my house, that I'd tested positive.

My boss wouldn't want me in anyway, better to wfh.
