I’ve name changed as I’m using my real name (no other way to put it in context).

my name is Morag. I work in NHS setting, only one bloke in the team and he came up with the highly amusing (not) nickname of SnotRag. Wasn’t too bad when it was just him saying it but other staff members started calling me it too, I’ve said time and time again not to call me it but it falls on death ears. Icing on the cake yesterday when my own student referred to me as SnotRag. I took her aside and told her not to call me that (as well as giving her general advice on not following Dickhead’s examples) and she apologised but said she thought everyone called me that as I was even down on the November off duty list as SnotRag!!! I’d not seen it. Worst thing about it is it wasn’t even this bloke who wrote it, it was someone else.

The nickname is now morphing into variations such as Snotty, Snots and Rags.

I spoke to the charge nurse yesterday who told me it was just a nickname and she gets called Pipsqueak (her name is Pippa) and that basically I just have to get on with it.

So WIBU to take it to her?? It’s driving me mad.

YANBU! I'd be fuming. Time to take it to HR.

Sparklesocks · 24/09/2023 14:15

That’s awful. As well as childish and disrespectful in a professional setting it could be classed as bullying - I would go over her head.

FirstFallopians · 24/09/2023 14:18

Fuck no, this is unbelievably disrespectful.

Escalate if you’re getting nowhere with the charge nurse.

Are you in Scotland, or another part of the U.K? I’m from a part of the country where mocking people’s regional (ie, Irish) names could potentially land them in serious trouble.

Aprilx · 24/09/2023 14:18

I would go to HR about that. It is absolutely not acceptable.

AtrociousCircumstance · 24/09/2023 14:19

HR.

smallshinybutton · 24/09/2023 14:19

Absolutely take this further. It is bullying.

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 24/09/2023 14:19

HR and maybe union rep. That very much is workplace bullying

FallGall · 24/09/2023 14:20

Disgusting. Go to HR.

How vile.

Catleveltired · 24/09/2023 14:21

It's bullying.

With a racial element if you're not working in Scotland.

NotMyNsme · 24/09/2023 14:22

Thanks everyone, I was made to feel like I was blowing it out of proportion and being a “snowflake” (another delightful name he came up with for me).

I do feel bad about the student as she genuinely thought it was ok due to it being written down etc, I could tell she was upset when I told her. I’ve reassured her that she isn’t in trouble but I feel bloody guilty

OP posts:
Catleveltired · 24/09/2023 14:24

I think you've taught the student an important lesson about joining in with bullies makes you a bully, too. Too right she should feel ashamed, hopefully she'll never do it again.

This is a big deal. A name is a vital part of your identity, and he is using that to bully you.

TheMurderousGoose · 24/09/2023 14:24

I would LOSE MY SHIT AT THIS.

Go nuclear, OP.

Pottomous2 · 24/09/2023 14:29

go above her head. This is disgraceful.

LlynTegid · 24/09/2023 14:30

Don't feel bad about the student who has apologised.

Yes an HR issue, bad enough using a nickname in speech, even worse in writing.

MsFannySqueers · 24/09/2023 14:31

Just another person here agreeing with PP’s. You really need to take this to the highest level and involve your union. What a nasty shit of a man to think he can do this. As for your colleagues words fail me as if anyone would want to be known by such a vile nickname. Good luck OP hope you can resolve this situation soon.

Mossstitch · 24/09/2023 14:31

I can't believe what I've just read (I work in the NHS too and our proper names appear on rotas even the xmas informal wishlist one). Sounds like a mysoginistic male trying to exert power and he needs a sharp shock (bollocking from a higher manager)!

sakura06 · 24/09/2023 14:32

Don't feel bad about the student! Of course they know it's not right to call someone Snotrag! Especially not their mentor! YANBU. It's so unprofessional. Please speak to HR.

Cadenza12 · 24/09/2023 14:33

HR. This is bullying. It's offensive and demeaning and meant to be. Don't buy that it's just a joke routine. You have a right to your feelings. Make notes, explain how you have asked for it to stop.

rockpoolingtogether · 24/09/2023 14:33

Unacceptable. It's wrong to change someone's name anyway eg Rebecca to Becky without checking, let along picking a name to mock you

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/09/2023 14:33

Is your colleague on work experience from Primary school? If not, he’s a dolt. Not acceptable.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/09/2023 14:34

And I LOVE your name, btw.

TheMurderousGoose · 24/09/2023 14:34

yeah, no sympathy for the student whatsoever. who cares if she was upset for being pulled up? she's either a liar or a simpleton.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 24/09/2023 14:36

It sounds like bullying to me. I suspect if you challenged him you’d get the “what’s the matter love? Can’t take a joke?” response. Definitely one for HR.

WongWifi · 24/09/2023 14:38

I can’t believe this is even happening! I’m so dirty you’re going through this. It’s completely unacceptable as others here have said. I’d be seeking legal advice. Put a stop to this harassment now.

WongWifi · 24/09/2023 14:39

Sorry not dirty! I type too quickly 🤦‍♀️
