I’ve name changed as I’m using my real name (no other way to put it in context).

my name is Morag. I work in NHS setting, only one bloke in the team and he came up with the highly amusing (not) nickname of SnotRag. Wasn’t too bad when it was just him saying it but other staff members started calling me it too, I’ve said time and time again not to call me it but it falls on death ears. Icing on the cake yesterday when my own student referred to me as SnotRag. I took her aside and told her not to call me that (as well as giving her general advice on not following Dickhead’s examples) and she apologised but said she thought everyone called me that as I was even down on the November off duty list as SnotRag!!! I’d not seen it. Worst thing about it is it wasn’t even this bloke who wrote it, it was someone else.

The nickname is now morphing into variations such as Snotty, Snots and Rags.

I spoke to the charge nurse yesterday who told me it was just a nickname and she gets called Pipsqueak (her name is Pippa) and that basically I just have to get on with it.

So WIBU to take it to her?? It’s driving me mad.

That's outrageous. Yes definitely complain to HR. It's bullying.

Brefugee · 25/09/2023 12:38

It's clear bullying.

Tell them to stop and take it to HR.
Good luck

EaudeJavel · 25/09/2023 12:42

Absolutely no way, I'd go nuclear too.

Auntieobem · 25/09/2023 12:42

HR won't help you. Your Union will, raising a grievance will. NHS HR are there to support the organisation, not to support staff. Most HR will do is point you to the correct policy.

Poppyseed14 · 25/09/2023 13:44

It's awful OP. And nothing like Pipsqueak which I would take to be a pet name.

Worddance · 25/09/2023 13:48

Bullying. Go in hard.

barofsoap · 25/09/2023 13:55

definitely contact HR, explain what has happened and in particular that you have asked them not to use that nickname.
the protagonist needs to be "summoned to a meeting"

faban · 25/09/2023 13:58

That is SO childish and I'd deff be going to HR

NeunundneunzigHorseBallonz · 25/09/2023 13:58

I would take this straight to HR now. You have told them all you don’t like it and they continue. It’s down on the off duty list. This is absolutely workplace bullying and they are minimizing your request to desist by gaslighting you. This is not acceptable in any professional environment.

Irridescantshimmmer · 25/09/2023 14:05

Yeah involve HR because they are disrespecting you, and it has caused you offence, as I can tell just from your post.

Morag is a nice name and you have every right to be proud of it.

Monkeymonkeymoo · 25/09/2023 14:11

I agree with everyone else that it’s totally unacceptable.
It’s obviously a nickname that you wouldn’t want and have also repeatedly said that you don’t like.
Nicknames should be funny, affectionate or endearing and most importantly they should be something that the person is happy with. The fact that other people are not just accepting it but also joining in is awful.
I also wouldn’t feel guilty about your student. It would be one thing if your name was something like Karen and she heard other people calling you Kaz and assumed you liked it. But it’s pretty obvious that no-one is going to want to be called snotrag in a professional setting (or any setting!)

I’d go back to the charge nurse (if you feel able to) and put in writing that you have asked them to stop and they won’t. Point out that you have already spoken to her once and that this isn’t something you find funny. I’d explain that it is disrespectful, upsetting and bullying behaviour that is designed to undermine you. If she still refuses to do anything then I would contact HR cc’ing your matron and service manager.
I know how difficult it can be to work in a toxic team with this sort of dynamic. I ended up looking for another job in the end because although the manager would stop individual behaviours it didn’t actually change the culture or the fact a couple of my colleagues were a total nightmare.

QueenBitch666 · 25/09/2023 14:23

Definitely HR. This is blatant bullying and absolutely disgusting

Fallingthroughclouds · 25/09/2023 14:52

How old is he....by he I mean this total Twat.

MargotBamborough · 25/09/2023 15:01

Absolutely not.

Contact HR and tell them you want them to knock it on the head immediately.

This is bullying and harassment.

If they can stop OP taking them to a tribunal for allowing bullying, HR will spring into action (with the speed of a striking slow-worm, probably)

They should act on the basis of an employee being harassed at work, but equally If HR think OP’s colleague’s behaviour is leaving them open to a potential tribunal (which is possible as they’re effectively making fun and harassing her because of her non-English name) then they will respond to protect themselves from a payout.

Createausername1970 · 25/09/2023 17:02

Definitely HR. Its disrespectful at best and bullying at worst. Say to HR that if they don't sort it out you will be going to your union rep about it.

Mojodojocasahaus · 25/09/2023 17:04

I’d have his balls on a stick for that

CherryMaDeara · 25/09/2023 17:05

What fucking dickheads.

This needs to stop asap.

TeddyFaces · 25/09/2023 17:08

You need to take it to HR, but also to your union too.
Then let HR know that you've also raised it with your union when you raise it with them, so they feel obligated to act.
I once had a woman at work who kept shortening my name, despite me telling her not to. In the end I snarled are you fucking thick or something? She never shortened it again after that.

WhatWhereWho · 25/09/2023 17:11

HR and tell them you are going to your union too. It's workplace harassment and bullying. Your complaint and request for assistance was also ignored so please do take it further. Make a formal complaint. Best of luck this is horrendous.

Drivingone · 25/09/2023 17:13

Your real name is lovely.

That nickname is bloody horrible, is the guy four years old?! Because that's the only excuse!

HauntedPencil · 25/09/2023 17:17

Christ how childish and puerile of them. It would enrage me, because it's not even funny. Sorry you are having to deal with this nonsense

Oysterbabe · 25/09/2023 17:20

Ya obviously nbu.
I hope he is hauled over the coals for this.

Starseeking · 25/09/2023 17:24

What kind of environment do you work in that this would be considered remotely acceptable?!? I'd report it to HR, and request that this bullying is stopped immediately.
