Is anyone still isolating with covid?

My sister is- she caught it from a friend who hadn't mentioned she had a temperature when they met up. (Another thread- I'm annoyed about that on her behalf!)
She's done 3 days positive and says she's going to isolate until she's negative. She has a toddler who her DH is of course looking after but it means he'll be missing work to look after toddler until she's well.

She's worried about passing it around- our parents are elderly and I think I'd be angry if someone who knew they had it gave it to them. She does feel like shit but then if it were flu she would also feel like shit and carry on because... toddler.

What would you do?

Currently day two of what I am thinking is a stinking cold. Covid testing negative at the moment. We still have a few tests left and keep wondering whether to continue testing. TBH only reason I’m testing is is DH would suffer with Covid awfully due to other health reasons but I think it’s too late now and he’d likely get it anyway. Which is exactly what happened last year when he got it and then a few days later I did (even though he was isolating in a bedroom).

I don’t feel great, I don’t need to go out, pre Covid I’d probably soldiered on, gone to work etc etc but now I think as I can stay home I will, just in case it is covid as would rather not be responsible for giving it to someone else who could end up a lot worse than me.

its a job to know quite what to think but I do think if you can easily stop it being spread to others by isolating then it’s the sensible thing to do.

The new variant has only been circulating for a few weeks, so I think you had the old version. I accept it’s different for everyone, but I know not a single person that has this one would ever describe it as mild.

I had it just a few weeks back, and Dec 2020 and as I said my dad even more recently. It was mild for us both. (Me both times)

@Lastchancechica

We have to remember that if covid was killing thousands of healthy people, we would have very strict guidelines still, enforcement I imagine too etc etc. For most people, as grim as covid is, it will pass. That’s why we have our normal lives back again.

So if covid was killing thousands of unhealthy people - vulnerable, disabled, elderly, obese, etc., - as it was as the beginning of the pandemic, does the same still apply? Would you support that?

Flu kills people including vulnerable people every year yet we never promoted self isolation?

Most people are so unwell with flu that they tend to stay home anyway. Not like covid which can be mild in one person and then severe in the next. Flu symptoms are more set - everyone tends to be similarly unwell.

We did, actually. If you do a Google search for 'Influenza articles isolation historical' and click on 'images' you'll see plenty of newspaper ads and articles discussing isolation and quarantine for influenza (particularly in 1918).

I meant in recent times pre covid.

If you have ‘flu, you won’t be getting out of bed. Most people saying that have it have a heavy cold.

Just tested positive and I will isolate for 5 days , tbh don’t feel well enough to go out anyway
also going to isolate from dh and older teens as they all have jobs to go to so can’t afford to be ill and take time off either
