I ate an undercooked prawn... should I be scared?

I cooked some thawed, previously frozen, raw king prawns by sauteeing them in the frying pan. I took one out to have a look at it - it was opaque but only just. It had only been cooking a couple of minutes. For some reason I then popped it in my mouth and ate it...

It tasted very nice. But now I'm worried that it wasn't cooked enough and I'm scared it will make me ill/kill me.

Should I be worried? Am I overreacting?

Why didn’t you just vomit it out?

You might get the shits but you’ll be fine.

BertieBotts · 23/09/2023 14:25

Yes you're overreacting.

Eating undercooked food just increases the risk of food borne illness, it isn't a switch that's flicked that will make you definitely ill.

How do you think the human race has survived so long, we didn't always have means to cook and it's only been fairly recently we've had hygiene guidance etc.

You can get everything "wrong" and chances are you'll be fine especially if it's a one off. It's advice to lower a risk that's all.

Sorry but this made me laugh for some reason. Think it was you describing how you popped it in your mouth 🤣.
Anyway.. you'll be fine! Try not to worry.

Chef husband says you'll be fine..
King prawn cooks in just over a minute ( he says)

If it tasted nice, it probably was cooked. Anyway, assuming you thawed it safely, it would probably have been safe to eat raw.

Yeah. Time to stick your sex toys into your neighbour's bin, and whatsapp the family group chat to tell your nearest and dearest you love them.

Then go lie on your bed and wait for death's sweet embrace.

You're not going to die* but might have an upset stomach in a few hours. You'll have to wait and see.
