DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

Really hope he is ok soon. I agree with the other posters, don’t go home. On call matron is a good idea, also paediatric anaesthetist. Ask to see them.
xx

ScreamingBeans · 23/09/2023 21:40

Sorry you and your son are going through this OP, well done on standing your ground, don't let them discharge until you're sure it's safe to do so and ask for a second opinion (Different doctors will come on when the shift is over). Don't be afraid to be a PITA. Hope they get to the bottom of it soon.

outerlope · 23/09/2023 21:42

I really hope that the fact it's been a few hours since an update means that things are moving forward and that you have got somewhere. I just hope that it's resulted in a diagnosis and he is on the mend but at the very least I hope that they are now doing more tests and that you are not being fobbed off. I can't stop thinking about your poor little boy and about how you just be feeling. We are all here behind you. There are so many knowledgable people here who know about your rights and what you can say or who to complain to if they try to send you home.

Hullabalooza · 23/09/2023 21:45

Hoping things have improved for you OP. Have you heard of Martha’s law? Get a second, third and fourth opinion and keep being the brilliant advocate for your boy xx

You poor love. The medical system in the UK is such a pile of shit. Hoping you get someone to actually help your little one 🙏

To be fair, one of the doctors made a comment that they might send him home if remaining tests ok. This didn't happen, they decided to keep him in either because they were concerned, due to abnormalities on the remaining test results or both.

Hoppityhappity · 23/09/2023 21:49

Hi Op, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned by another user but have the drs mentioned a condition called intusscuseption? It is when the intestine telescopes in on itself and my DD had it and had very similar symptoms to your DS. She was passing out with pain and being sick and in agony. It corrected itself, luckily, as it often does. Hope you get answers soon.

rainbowruthie · 23/09/2023 21:52

Keeping you and your dear little boy in my thoughts x

Illbebythesea · 23/09/2023 21:54

Gosh I’m so sorry OP, your poor son! Only 4, a baby really. Keep being his advocate, keep fighting. I hope you get answers really soon & that it’s something easily treated. He will be ok! Take care x

Remaker · 23/09/2023 21:55

My DS went to Emergency with similar symptoms earlier this year - vomiting green bile, unable to stand up or walk with the pain, cold and clammy. Although he is a teenager so more reliable with describing the location of the pain. They suspected appendicitis and were about 80% sure but were confident it hadn’t ruptured as they said the episode hadn’t been going for long enough. It was a bank holiday and there was a delay with the ultrasound machine so we were offered the option to go straight to surgery which we took. It was indeed appendicitis and it had ruptured which surprised everyone.

The reason we went ahead with surgery was the doctor told us that ultrasound isn’t particularly accurate for appendicitis anyway. I would not be comfortable taking my child home with those symptoms and no definitive diagnosis. Keep pushing OP.

Sending love daydreaming. I hope your little guy is doing better now xxx

samqueens · 23/09/2023 22:05

OP - I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I haven’t read the whole thread but have read your posts. I hope someone has already mentioned this and I do not want to scare you more than you already are or unnecessarily but…

there have been two well publicised cases recently of children (older than your son) becoming seriously I’ll and getting septic with the exact types of symptoms your describing and also following what we’re seeming minor injuries - one was a bike and one something else one a contact sport. This first one was a guardian journalists daughter - she was called Martha. The other was Middy Lawrence who was a young adult.

In your shoes I would refuse to get sent home, ask for second/third/fourth opinions - I know they are understaffed but this could be an emergency. I would be screaming sepsis, I would email the guardian journo via the paper to ask for any advice, I would make it clear to the doctors that you are aware of both these cases and the similarities and outcomes, I would ask someone in your family to find info on both from reputable reporting sources and compile a list of questions/treatment possibilities etc for you to go on and on the the doctors about, I would be wanting that referral to the big children’s hospital. I would NOT stop.

This may be nothing like those cases, I am not a medical professional, I am not there, I don’t know your son etc etc and I deeply hope this is nothing. But from your posts so far, and even though I read those news reports a while ago, the similarities are so striking that I didn’t want to read this and not share this info.

Literally shout sepsis and do not stop until someone takes you seriously. If there’s a nurse you like ask whether broad spectrum antibiotics might help if it is possible sepsis, just keep banging the drum. Please. Good luck xx

I hope your little boy is doing ok and you get answers soon..

Butterflysunshine01 · 23/09/2023 22:09

Another one suggesting possible intussusceptum- where the bowel turns in on itself but it's incredibly painful.a family member of mine had this and a lot of the doctors had never seen it before- it took one senior doctor to suggest it.

Teateaandmoretea · 23/09/2023 22:15

My first thought was it sounded like abdominal migraine but if it’s still bad then not. Really hope you get to the bottom of it and he feels better soon.

Although googling tells me they can last up to 72 hours. My experience was they went away much quicker but absolutely floored the child in their wake. She always said the pain was around her belly button.

stressbucket1 · 23/09/2023 22:19

Intussusception is usually seen on ultrasound and generally occurs in younger children. It's good they are keeping him in and worth considering the bike accident he had. Did the handlebar twist and push into his tummy at all? That can cause internal bleeding and CT would be the method of diagnosis for that.
Hope he is better soon

WhitestShadeofPale · 23/09/2023 22:19

Hi, have they checked in case your son’s appendix is on the wrong side? More common than people think - mine was. I had similar symptoms to your son (at 15 years old, though) and ended up in emergency surgery - they only found out what was wrong when they opened me up. Admittedly that was in the 1980s and I would hope that scans nowadays would pick that up.
(Have t rad the whole thread, apols if that’s already been ruled out)

Poetnojo · 23/09/2023 22:21

I hope you've gotten some answers and your boy is being looked after.

Mirabai · 23/09/2023 22:26

Abdominal pain is tricky diagnose. I hope you get to the bottom of it soon OP.

WhitestShadeofPale · 23/09/2023 22:26

Ah, I see someone has mentioned the wrong-sided appendix. I wanted to add that I had an ultrasound that didn’t pick it up.

tolerable · 23/09/2023 22:28

thinking of you op.and youre little one x

sueelleker · 23/09/2023 22:31

I did wonder if it could be a ruptured spleen, but I don't think that causes vomiting.

literalviolence · 23/09/2023 22:32

my neice had similar symptoms at 4. Appendicitis was thought unlikely because of her age and the the symptoms were less clear than in an older child but the appendix ruptured. She was fine in the end but illy sister had to be persistent to get it taken seriously.

Zonder · 23/09/2023 22:32

I hope you've got some answers now OP and that he's feeling better.

Evanna13 · 23/09/2023 22:36

I hope you get to the bottom of it OP and he is feeling better x
