Do you clean up after yourself in fast food restaurants?

I know it's MacDonalds so I'm a terrible mother, but at least I'm a terrible mother who can put her own rubbish in a bin!!

Went to Maccies alone today and was shocked to see a family (Mom, Dad, two kids maybe 6 and 4) leave this mess. But it isn't just them. There's always a table like this where people have just made an absolute mess then got up and walked away.

I normally chuck a first load away whilst the kids are eating and then a second load before we leave. Is wipe up a ketchup or drink spill. I'd pick up loose fries.

Surely that's just normal? Aibu to think I'm not the weird one?

I haven't a couple of times because both bins were overflowing so I left everything neatly contained on my table rather than next to/half in a bin

I don't judge the tidy stackers

I really want an AMA with someone who throws rubbish out of their car window or on the floor. Like the pigs I was on a flight with once who left their seats and the space below festooned with wrappers, food and other detritus after a mere two-hour flight. Or maybe the people who get fresh food out of the chiller in the supermarket and then leave it with the baked beans.

I know there’s only one question, but I really want to hear the answer.

Not with Ryan air 🤣
I was actually rather impressed at the fearsome ordering of people to put their rubbish in proffered bin bags. It certainly wasn’t just a request, I watched a steward get a row to clear up their mess quite firmly.

StillWantingADog · 22/09/2023 18:48

I worked in McDonald’s years ago and I was shocked at the number of people who didn’t.
but even more shocked at the people who ate their drive thru in the car then literally chucked it out the window

Always clean up after myself, even at a normal restaurant.. I'd scrap the plates onto one and stack them to make it easier for the staff, I know how rushed off their feet they can be

I do this too.

I8toys · 22/09/2023 18:48

Always. Teaching your children to be responsible for their own shite. I saw this recently at a service station, mum with 3 kids - the little ones were wandering off everywhere, remember this is at a motorway service station. They left the place absolutely devastated. Absolute joke of a human being.

Ohthatsabitshit · 22/09/2023 18:49

We manage to put things in the bin and ds has fairly significant additional needs. I would assume people were either gross or having a really dreadful day if they left everything on the table. That said the staff quite often tell me to leave it so maybe they would rather clear it.

AtomicBlondeRose · 22/09/2023 18:55

I wouldn’t take plates and cups back in a cafe. Usually the only space to put them is the counter where people are being served and fresh food and drinks and being placed - you’d be getting in everyone’s way plonking dirty dishes down there. And if staff haven’t cleared your table it’s because they’re busy, which means they’re also too busy to drop what they’re doing and take dirty plates from you.

I do throw rubbish away in McDonald’s, although recently there’s been a member of staff near the bins who wrestles the tray off me instead of letting me do it myself!

JohnnyYenSetHimselfOnFireAgain · 22/09/2023 18:55

I always clean up after myself, wherever I am. That's disgusting. Horrible, entitled, bone idle chavvy tramps. 😡

Justme10 · 22/09/2023 19:06

I used to work in McDonalds and people are just disgusting.

I remember having to clean the tables and someone had left a shitty nappy on the table. So they must have changed the nappy at the table around everyone eating 🤢

Flakey99 · 22/09/2023 19:06

No, we’re not messy eaters, so the table wouldn’t be full of crud. But I’d leave my plates and cups behind because that’s what you do in a normal restaurant.

I think some people are naturally messy and yes, maybe the people sat at the nearby table do know the expected tidying etiquette and couldn’t be bothered. Or perhaps they just didn’t realise?

I really hate this idea in Britain that everyone automatically has the same cultural experiences and so knows all the unspoken rules of etiquette but reading many threads on here shows that there are plenty of us that have grown up with different rules and expectations and are being unfairly judged.

Especially when you read the many visiting guest etiquette threads. It’s a complete minefield!

I even crouch down and pick up any food my toddler dropped on the floor. It's sad we're not more considerate of others! I've heard it said that people who act like this never had to actually work at their jobs, and people who tidy up do it because they've had that type of job before. I agree- I've had restaurant jobs and any kindness helps.

Not true actually, it's just that some people are more decent and considerate of others, or better brought up. Either can apply.

hattie43 · 22/09/2023 19:18

Yes I do , it's the height of rudeness to expect others to clear up after you .

TurquoiseDress · 22/09/2023 19:19

Totally normal to tidy up after yourselves!

Always make sure we do this, kids take things to the bins etc

McDonalds always have awful epic messy tables, I feel sorry for the staff working there Shock

Some people just have no bloody idea...just clear up after yourselves! And if you spill drink all over the seat/table/floor at least let a member of staff know!

tsmainsqueeze · 22/09/2023 19:26

Always clear up every single time wherever we are.
I actually feel embarrassed for those scummy people.

Probably a customer experience leader - they're still not quite sure what to do with us!

TellerTuesday · 22/09/2023 19:47

Always and I massively judge those that don't. Especially when it's heaving and people are waiting for tables..... oh there's one, let me just take someone else's kid's half chewed nuggets to the bin first. Scruffy bastards!!

Horrifies me that it's alway families as well, basically teaching their kids that it's someone else's job to clean up after them. Then they probably bollock the kids for making a mess at home.

AnnieKayTee · 22/09/2023 19:50

Always clean up after ourselves. Rubbish in the bin in fast food. Plates scraped and stacked in restaurants. Floor always checked for food. Chairs pushed back in as we've left. It's just polite. Nobody is there to actually clean up after you. Imagine if everyone just left their tables like that.

Aren't they just. I remember the indoor play area and surrounding tables being particularly disgusting. A bunch of chimpanzees would have left less mess.

AtomicBlondeRose · 22/09/2023 20:08

@QuestionableMouse I have to say the staff in McDonald’s are about the nicest staff I see anywhere, especially to kids. So friendly and helpful! So sometimes I honestly feel embarrassed handing my tray of rubbish over to someone when I could do it myself 😳

jellytots18 · 22/09/2023 20:09

The thing is, they would have walked past a bin on the way out. It's so entitled

Mouk · 22/09/2023 20:10

We always clear our table in McD's.

I was there a few weeks ago and these 2 well dressed women were sat at the next table, make up, hair and nails all perfect. The mess they left behind on the table was astonishing!

Vitriolinsanity · 22/09/2023 20:12

Yep. If I spill I pick up. Always. It was a hard race between me and the serving staff at Gordon Ramsey.

Hummingbird233 · 22/09/2023 20:14

We always tidy up. Partly because it's selfish not to on the worker and partly to teach our kids good morals.

There will always be idiots.

Vitriolinsanity · 22/09/2023 20:17

The point is that in places like McDonald's vs a cafe there are bins everywhere. The entire model is eat from cartons and chuck it on your way out. How is that complicated?
