Do you clean up after yourself in fast food restaurants?

I know it's MacDonalds so I'm a terrible mother, but at least I'm a terrible mother who can put her own rubbish in a bin!!

Went to Maccies alone today and was shocked to see a family (Mom, Dad, two kids maybe 6 and 4) leave this mess. But it isn't just them. There's always a table like this where people have just made an absolute mess then got up and walked away.

I normally chuck a first load away whilst the kids are eating and then a second load before we leave. Is wipe up a ketchup or drink spill. I'd pick up loose fries.

Surely that's just normal? Aibu to think I'm not the weird one?

Yes because I'm not a cunt.

MrsMarzetti · 22/09/2023 17:57

On the one and only occasion i have been in KFC with my Son in law, i started to gather the rubbish for the bin and he told me not to bother as that is what the staff get paid to do, the look i gave him had him gathering the rubbish. He really went down in my estimation that day. He was told in no uncertain terms what i thought of him.

Yes, because I’m not a dickhead

This 😂

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 22/09/2023 18:01

I’m sure during covid a lot of places told you to leave your tray / rubbish on the table so that it was obvious which tables had / hadn’t been cleaned? I wonder if the habit of binning your own stuff just hasn’t filtered back through for some people?
At minimum though I would leave all rubbish neatly on my tray, even if I couldn’t see a bin.

Yes, always and have taught DD to as well.

Went to a hotel a few months ago and had the buffet breakfast. There was a family with a set of infant twins and a toddler so all in high chairs. They'd loaded up the trays on the high chairs so the kids could feed themselves. Kids had thrown 95% of the food on the floor. When they finished they just picked up the kids and walked off leaving food absolutely everywhere. Scrambled egg, bacon, chunks of sausage, shredded up toast, beans.... just scattered all around the floor and high chairs.

I feel so sorry for the poor staff member who had to clean it all up.

I remember years before my dc going to a restaurant with her pfb and her leaving the table and the floor like this and I was mortified. After dc especially in the high chair phase both DH and I have cleared up the floor as much as we can or we’ve actually asked for a dust pan and brush.

AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside · 22/09/2023 18:03

I always clean up. But having worked in mcds, and having done lobby (cleaned up the restaurant area) there are many arseholes that think people are paid to clean up after them.

We used to have teenagers come in and tip fries all over the place, squirt ketchup everywhere, even wipe burgers across the walls.

Then, there was the toilets...

Lots of people are entitled cunts. What can you do. The type of parenting adopted by a lot encourages this shit.

There's even the ones that eat in their cars then open the door and tip all the rubbish out onto the floor.

Kissmas · 22/09/2023 18:04

"Well the PP obviously isn’t judging situations when you are asked to leave it, is she?"

Dunno, on previous cinema mess threads there were pps insistent that their cinema didn't tell them to leave it. One of them named my local cinema and so the next time I went I checked and it turned out she just wasn't paying attention. They ask you to leave it on the screen after the trailers.

Worst thing was she'd shamed 2 teenage girls in front of a crowd and sent them back to pick up their rubbish.

henrysugar12 · 22/09/2023 18:07

Yes, although in my nearest one there's a lovely lady who doesn't let you clear up and she does it for you. I still tidy the table and tray though!

AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside · 22/09/2023 18:08

Icannoteven · 22/09/2023 17:43

I do because it is the norm but actually, I don’t think it should be expected. Especially somewhere like McDonald’s that insists on calling itself a restaurant. In any other restaurant you wouldn’t be expected to take your plate to the kitchen and clean it would you?

when I worked in McDonalds we always had a member of staff who was there just to greet/ give out balloons and tidy after people (this was back in the early 00’s so I’m not sure that this is still the case). I didn’t mind when people left a mess because it gave me something to do. I don’t remember any of our staff judging people for this - people were there to eat/ have a break from food prep/cleanup. We were there to serve them and make sure they had an enjoyable experience. Same when I have worked in any service industry really. I didn’t mind collecting the glasses at a pub etc.

Edited

We always take our glasses back to the bar too, I wouldn't just leave them on the table.

Same as if I was in a cafe and there was no waitress about, whoxd cleared our table, I'd take my plate and stuff back to the counter.

It's basic manners Confused

LibbyL92 · 22/09/2023 18:17

Always.

I also take my glass to the bar in the pub before I leave.

Flakey99 · 22/09/2023 18:22

Probably me. 😂

Is this just for McD’s or other fast food places? I went into a Nando’s with my DS a few weeks ago when we were away and definitely didn’t remove the plates etc. afterwards.

I don’t go to fast food type places very often so wouldn’t know you’re supposed to tidy your own table afterwards unless there’s signs asking you to, like in IKEA?

I think you’re being a bit mean assuming that everybody knows the etiquette of these places. My DS is 14 and has probably visited a McD’s less than 5 times in his life. Me, even less.

Tothemoonandbackx · 22/09/2023 18:24

Went to an all you can eat the other night, you should have seen the state of the table behind us, there were 12 of them, teenagers and adults, it was disgusting, plates everywhere, loads of food still left on them, napkins strewn all over, cutlery all over, food all over the table and floor!!!!! We left ours as tidy as possible, plates all to one side, glasses put together etc. Can't stand when people leave tables like that!!

megletthesecond · 22/09/2023 18:24

Yes, always.

Seriously?

If there's a bin and a shelf or rack to put your tray, as is the case in most fast food or supermarket cafe places, you're supposed to use it FFS. Surely you don't need this pointing out to you?

QuestionableMouse · 22/09/2023 18:29

BogRollBOGOF · 22/09/2023 17:02

We always clean up. With a dyspraxic child, there can be a limit to what we can achieve with serviettes, but we always do what is reasonably possible to help staff just give it a quick wipe over once we've done.

The staff tend to be pretty lovely, and because we do make the effort, if there is an incident like swimming in hot chocolate they're normally very helpful about it.

I've worked on the dining area at McDonald's for ten years now. I honestly don't care about genuine accidents - it's the picks who think it's amazingly funny to make and leave a massive mess that piss me off.

The more time I spend cleaning tables, the less time I have to do fun stuff for the customers.

SunnieShine · 22/09/2023 18:31

Yes, it would feel rude not to, and it only takes a minute.

Igloolou · 22/09/2023 18:35

We went to a local attraction last week and sat in the restaurant feeding baby. I watched so many other tables behave like absolute animals and leave it for someone else to clear up.
one woman watched her son break up a box of crackers on to the floor and just left it there. Shit all over all the tables floor. People are truly hideous.

RancidRuby · 22/09/2023 18:37

Yes I would always clean up after myself, because I'm not an inconsiderate pig.

UnctuousUnicorns · 22/09/2023 18:37

Yes, always have done. I've worked as a cleaner in McDonald's in the past, you've barely time to sweep and mop floors, empty bins, restock napkins etc, wipe tables, seats and other fixtures, clean sinks and toilets etc. . Cleaners have plenty to do without having to clear away lazy customers' stuff!

CardamomGarden · 22/09/2023 18:39

SleepingStandingUp · 22/09/2023 17:36

Oh come on
Someone leaves these messes. Name change and admit it and why!!

I really want an AMA with someone who throws rubbish out of their car window or on the floor. Like the pigs I was on a flight with once who left their seats and the space below festooned with wrappers, food and other detritus after a mere two-hour flight. Or maybe the people who get fresh food out of the chiller in the supermarket and then leave it with the baked beans.

I know there’s only one question, but I really want to hear the answer.

Where the fuck do you start with this?

OP, yanbu, only ignorant pigs don’t clean up after themselves

dancinfeet · 22/09/2023 18:41

we saw a B list (soap) celebrity and his kids and family leave a mess like this on the floor in York Theatre Royal at last years panto, we were sat right behind them as they munched, crunched, slurped and threw their rubbish all over the floor. Bloody tramps, pisses me right off it is completely disrespectful to the staff.

Yes. Even if there’s nowhere to throw the stuff away yourself, it’s the failure to not at least gather it together so that it’s not simply left where it fell from the hand that is so inconsiderate. Never realised anyone needed to be told this.

randomsabreuse · 22/09/2023 18:45

I haven't a couple of times because both bins were overflowing so I left everything neatly contained on my table rather than next to/half in a bin

Ok, so accepting that you don't understand what the bins or for or take no hint from what everyone else is doing, do you honestly leave a total mess over the entire table tho? I mean I get the people saying well COVID and staff and so they know where to wipe and golly how do I know how these places operate. But this spread of detritus was over a table that seats 10 and was four people. They didn't even put their crap back on the tray.
