Do you clean up after yourself in fast food restaurants?

I know it's MacDonalds so I'm a terrible mother, but at least I'm a terrible mother who can put her own rubbish in a bin!!

Went to Maccies alone today and was shocked to see a family (Mom, Dad, two kids maybe 6 and 4) leave this mess. But it isn't just them. There's always a table like this where people have just made an absolute mess then got up and walked away.

I normally chuck a first load away whilst the kids are eating and then a second load before we leave. Is wipe up a ketchup or drink spill. I'd pick up loose fries.

Surely that's just normal? Aibu to think I'm not the weird one?

Always. It’s basic manners. My friends pop their mugs in the sink/on side as they are leaving too. It’s called respect for others.

CornishTiger · 22/09/2023 17:24

The only time I wouldn’t would be of child in full meltdown mode but tbh I’d have attempted it anyway and tidied as we were coming to an end anyway!

LemonQuiche · 22/09/2023 17:25

It’s disgusting. Why do they think there are bins?

SleepingStandingUp · 22/09/2023 17:26

BlowDryRat · 22/09/2023 17:06

Yes, and I judge people who don't. Like they think they're too good to put their own rubbish in the bin Confused Same with the cinema, theatre and sporting events.

Omg don't. The state of cinemas and theatres afterwards as I'm passive aggressively telling the 8 yo, have you got all your rubbish? It isn't the staffs job to clean up after us is it??

I even crouch down and pick up any food my toddler dropped on the floor. It's sad we're not more considerate of others! I've heard it said that people who act like this never had to actually work at their jobs, and people who tidy up do it because they've had that type of job before. I agree- I've had restaurant jobs and any kindness helps.

had I seen you take a photograph… I would have totally thought… there’s a mumsnetter about to start a thread!

I was surreptitious and they'd left 😆😆

Yes always.

I always do but it is one of the tasks given to staff so its not the end of the world if people don't OP 🤣

The main task in places like that regards to tidying up is brushing the floor and cleaning up spills, not chucking other people's rubbish in the bin. It's only given as a job to those that work there because of lazy dickheads who don't bother their arse. Hate that "but someone gets paid to do that" attitude

"Yes, and I judge people who don't. Like they think they're too good to put their own rubbish in the bin Same with the cinema, theatre and sporting events."

Our cinema asks you to leave all rubbish at your seat. So you can leave your judgy pants at home for that one. In McDonald's or similar I would always clear up though.

Well she can leave her jidgey pants in YOUR home, our cinema asks you to bring it down with you, and they stand at the front and take liquids, have a bin bag etc, or there's tons of bins in the lobby. But it isn't even just neat rubbish on the floor. It's cups with lids off all over the floor, wrappers thrown on the floor etc. Just no regards for their environment

I'd have sympathy if that were the case, but they weren't, they spent ages deliberating over which dessert to take with them that wasn't messy (😆) so not even in a rush

yes always, I hate seeing when people havent

I dont think anyone will admit on here that they are someone who doesnt though

Kissmas · 22/09/2023 17:34

"Well she can leave her jidgey pants in YOUR home,"

What? Confused

There have been so many threads on this but before the screenings at most Vue cinemas they ask you to leave the rubbish at your seat. It's not unusual and although I leave it tidy I will do as I am asked.

I always wonder at the people insisting on cramming their rubbish into the bins in the foyer when they have been specifically asked not to.

greengreengrass25 · 22/09/2023 17:36

Yes would always clear up

It's disrespectful not to

SleepingStandingUp · 22/09/2023 17:36

Oh come on
Someone leaves these messes. Name change and admit it and why!!

Yes we clean away our rubbish. Also try to take empty glasses back to the bar when out for a drink if we are leaving

Well the PP obviously isn’t judging situations when you are asked to leave it, is she?

Sparklesocks · 22/09/2023 17:41

It’s not hard to bang the rubbish in the bag/on the tray and pop it in the bin when you leave.
I think sometimes people think when they’re out to eat that they’re paying to be served (even with cheap fast food) so it’s below them to do it.

gogomoto · 22/09/2023 17:42

Always tidy up at those sorts of places, they provide bins, that's the hint!

Icannoteven · 22/09/2023 17:43

I do because it is the norm but actually, I don’t think it should be expected. Especially somewhere like McDonald’s that insists on calling itself a restaurant. In any other restaurant you wouldn’t be expected to take your plate to the kitchen and clean it would you?

when I worked in McDonalds we always had a member of staff who was there just to greet/ give out balloons and tidy after people (this was back in the early 00’s so I’m not sure that this is still the case). I didn’t mind when people left a mess because it gave me something to do. I don’t remember any of our staff judging people for this - people were there to eat/ have a break from food prep/cleanup. We were there to serve them and make sure they had an enjoyable experience. Same when I have worked in any service industry really. I didn’t mind collecting the glasses at a pub etc.

itsgettingweird · 22/09/2023 17:43

Always.

When I go I do order table service. Which makes me even more determines to make sure I find it how I left it!

GeneralLevy · 22/09/2023 17:49

I do when left to it, but my local McDonald’s do employ someone. She’s around to offer before you’ve stood up, keeps everything wiped down. Pleasant and chatty, offers to get stuff and generally looks after everyone. She tells you not to and insists!

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/09/2023 17:50

Saw a woman allow her kid to drop the fast food container and remains of food on the pavement “don’t worry, the Council will clear it up”. Challenged her, but I’m not good at thinking on my feet, so it wasn’t effective. Lets hope the kid learns the lesson well and leaves LOTS of stuff around the living room for her Mum to clear up Grin

raceacross · 22/09/2023 17:51

We've eaten at ikea recently, and although the place was huge it was really hard to find a fairly clean table.

The last time I was at McDonald's it was in Slovenia. The tables (and the toilets!) were super clean. It was all self service. There was a little moving robot for the trays. It was a very pleasant eating experience.

Lampzade · 22/09/2023 17:54

I always do and so do my dcs.
I actually think that it is poor parenting to not teach your dcs the importance of cleaning up after yourself.
I always side eye those who just leave their rubbish on the tables . It is actually disgusting imho

Other fast food chains don’t. They employ staff, but it’s the kitchen staff who are responsible for cleaning the dining room. They’re perpetually trying to balance cleaning with keeping queue length down. So making their job easier seems fair
