I got my UC payment today. Just checked and it’s almost £300 less than usual. This is because my oldest is now classed as an adult as he’s left ft education. He’s not currently in work.
I have 3 other children but now I seemingly only get support for 2 of them due to the child cap.
Im freaking out. I only get maintenance for one of the children as I have the other 2 50/50 with their dad. I cannot afford to lose this much money every month. I was already struggling as it was. I’m unable to work just yet as one of the children has complex needs. I already get some DLA for them.
im quite sure there’s nothing I can do about this but I’m so worried

Her is still here. You are all so rude. I was a single mother, I also worked and I was homeless at 16. Is that enough adversity for you?

Tell us how you did it then! I'd love to hear how to manage it.

Secondwindplease · 22/09/2023 19:41

@Princessandthepea0 welcome to the homeless at 16 club. It’s very elite 👋

I’m not quite sure what your issue is. You completely missed the point, went on an epic rant (dragging everyone in) and you’ve still not helped op come up with a long term solution.

Bizarre.

My issue is you thinking just because you managed something everyone, including the OP can.

I have advised the OP, I advised her to claim CA anyway because of the long term benefits of better NI credits, I also advised her to check her UC claim.

No it isn’t one big and painful nerve. Bizarre. It is incorrect. Unpaid carers save the state a fortune and rightly receive benefits for that.

Actually her benefits may not ever end. It depends how disabled her child is. If child is unable to ever be independent and always need 24 hour care I would hope the mum will always get benefits to look after child. I would hope she can get respite care as well.

There we go again - can’t discredit the argument so better discredit the person.

Btw, are you throwing that accusation at me or @Princessandthepea0, mother of three disabled children? Just so we know.

Anyone who fits the bill.

I wasn’t the poster who said her benefits would end, quite the opposite in fact.

OMG for the twenty millionth time @Princessandthepea0 literally said ‘some people cant’. Why must you continually misrepresent her position?

Do I win! I was homeless at 15 😁
I'm in my 50s now.

What's OP going to do with her degree whilst caring for her disabled children?

FFS, she didn’t say that in the first post, which was the post I originally challenged. All other replies have been in response to her/you.

By working very long hours for several years seeing the end goal. A better future for my children and myself. Using all time in the evenings, during those sleepless nights to study online. Was it easy? No. To be frank, I didn’t have enough time to be on forums tearing everyone down saying how bad my life was. My focus was on the future.

I’ve literally got all this shit for suggesting that op thinks long term. That is it. I’ve not said she has to rush out to work; I said she needs to think long term. What’s she going to do when all her UC dries up because her children have moved on. Now is the time to try and think long term and plan for it. She’d be foolish not to. Why that has hit such a nerve is beyond me. It’s the only sensible thing to do.

Then it's a manufactured issue, because this didn't happen. What is wrong with you?!

Baconisdelicious · 22/09/2023 19:47

The ones not working are likely to be the ones in poverty but actually, especially on UC when you have working parents it does become a lot more generous because of the taper rates and the work allowances which you get when you have kids on the claim and 85% of childcare costs paid for. I am honestly surprised by how much better off people are by working on UC

Hmmm....single parent, full time work, child on DLA,....I will be about £2.5k a year worse off on UC than on Tax Credits.

So what about my questions? Who provided for the household while you were studying full time? Who took care of the children while you studied? Did they charge? If yes where did the money come from?

Of course on Carers Allowance you aren't allowed to study full time so it won't help OP.

Yes you are. You can study full time via the OU. Distance leaning is classed as part time. Solutions, solutions.

This.

Take £200 from him, what does he need to spend it on if you’re covering his living expenses?

I am on uc - the amount you get is based on household income - so OP has lost £50 not £300.
Her son has been moved to jsa at £250.00 a month in order that he can access job related training etc - he still lives at home so this is factored in to the amount of household income - some things such pip dla child maintenance are not included so are given as extra. But carers allowance is counted so the amount is deducted also. Housing allowance is a separate payment also. So OP situation has not changed much financially only by £ 50 a month which I am sure she can save from somewhere in the budget, unfortunately for her son this money is household income not his pocket money.

Such odd behaviour.

Hollyhead · 22/09/2023 19:52

I have no idea how this has ended up such a bum fight against the op. The op has 3 children, one with social needs, I would say if she can cope without working that reasonable. It’s the second adult in the house that needs to step up. Everyone knows that when you’re 18 you just take whatever job you can get get money to get you started.

People aren’t ableist just because they disagree with you. You just call them that when you want to shift the debate from one based on issues to to one based on character.

It’s just a rhetorical tactic you deploy. Along with ‘ignorant’. And ‘bizarre’.

You can't if it's a full time course. What did you do?
