Benefits reduction

I got my UC payment today. Just checked and it’s almost £300 less than usual. This is because my oldest is now classed as an adult as he’s left ft education. He’s not currently in work.
I have 3 other children but now I seemingly only get support for 2 of them due to the child cap.
Im freaking out. I only get maintenance for one of the children as I have the other 2 50/50 with their dad. I cannot afford to lose this much money every month. I was already struggling as it was. I’m unable to work just yet as one of the children has complex needs. I already get some DLA for them.
im quite sure there’s nothing I can do about this but I’m so worried

It is ignorant to think just because you can everyone can.

It's equally ignorant to think that because you can't, nobody can 🤷🏻‍♀️

She didn’t say that though. She said, and I quote -

Some people can’t, a lot of people don’t want to.

Take a minute to let that sink in.

Sorry for the delay. I haven’t read all the replies(there’s quite a lot!)
when he was doing his A levels he had a pt job in a restaurant. He was there about 2 years but he left a few months ago. Too many staff, not enough customers.

Edited

Great he had a job while studying

I was the same at college 30yrs ago. Worked at my local coop 3 nights and Saturday

Did he like the restaurant trade @Bonsaitreepic

Can he apply for jobs as a waiter /behind the bar in pubs cafe restaurants etxx

But it may well have been possible for op, had she had a mind to.
You are determined to shout down anyone who suggests op might have to look at doing things differently going forward.

Why? You don't know her circumstances in any greater depth than anyone else reading her posts, yet you're like a dog with a bone.

It may have been possible for her. Doesn’t mean it is possible for everyone which is what she was insinuating.

No I don’t know OP circumstances any better than what she has posted, but OP has posted she is unable to work yet posters keep insisting she is.

The ones not working are likely to be the ones in poverty but actually, especially on UC when you have working parents it does become a lot more generous because of the taper rates and the work allowances which you get when you have kids on the claim and 85% of childcare costs paid for. I am honestly surprised by how much better off people are by working on UC.

In work poverty is increasing - with the erosion of benefits and the fact salaries haven’t kept up with inflation, coupled with the low salaries already in place, many people who work are now in poverty. Whatever your view of benefits, they really are no longer a safety net for those who need them

Secondwindplease · 22/09/2023 19:16

OvertakenByLego · 22/09/2023 19:13

She did insinuate it in the pp.

She said it’s possible and gave herself as an example. She didn’t say it’s always possible in every circumstance. In fact in her later post she said the opposite - ‘some people can’t’. So surely that satisfies you?

I only mentioned my degree because of the hysterical responses to my post saying op couldn’t possibly better herself.

Hard truth is - she will have to. Thinking long term, her benefits will end. The sooner she thinks about that and how to tackle that the better. Just taking UC is a really, really short term solution.

That is clearly one big and painful nerve for you.

She said “Yes it can be done”. When no not all can do it. Yes, she later added some can’t, but that was only after I and others challenged her.

No it isn’t one big and painful nerve. Bizarre. It is incorrect. Unpaid carers save the state a fortune and rightly receive benefits for that.

I’m not quite sure what your issue is. You completely missed the point, went on an epic rant (dragging everyone in) and you’ve still not helped op come up with a long term solution.

Bizarre.

Secondwindplease · 22/09/2023 19:18

Oh, give over, Lego. Saying "It can be done" literally means that it's possible. There is NO implication that it can be done by anyone and everyone.

Secondwindplease · 22/09/2023 19:22

OvertakenByLego · 22/09/2023 19:19

There we go again - can’t discredit the argument so better discredit the person.

Btw, are you throwing that accusation at me or @Princessandthepea0, mother of three disabled children? Just so we know.

Caterpillarsleftfoot · 22/09/2023 19:24

I think you need to look for work. You have already set the example for your eldest of a life on benefits. Change that for the younger ones.

Ponderingwindow · 22/09/2023 19:25

If he isn’t in full-time education, he needs to be working full time. He should be able to get a job in fast food or certain types of retail very quickly. Then he can keep looking for something better.

he needs to pay his real living expenses, not just a token amount to you. His benefits aren’t for pocket money, they are to cover his essential needs like rent, utilities, food, and a phone. He will also need money for transportation to go to job interviews.

Another nasty comment. Op has a disabled child and maybe the kids dads ( who one of them has then half of the time) is working and setting that example. Why make a comment to put op down and make out she's led this life on benefits by choice ? She has a disabled child and two young . FFS some of the comments on here are unbelievable.

And she still hasn't responded to questions about how exactly she did it and what resources she had access to.

Dixiechickonhols · 22/09/2023 19:31

Unless you’ve got a trust fund though you don’t have luxury of ‘finding yourself’ between 18 & 20.
He’s got 2 years part time restaurant experience. He’s got A levels. He’s got a disabled sibling so will have some caring experience. It’s been summer with seasonal work. I’d query what exactly he’d been applying for and what he’s proactively been doing to increase his chances eg volunteering.
It sounds as though he’s had 12 weeks off with £200 a month spends, all bills paid and no pressure from mum to get a job.

DragonFly98 · 22/09/2023 17:38

Obviously because your dd is not available for work and spending 35 hours a week searching.

If you had read my post, you would see I said that she could go to university, and we are obliged to also give her thousands of pounds on top of her loans, OR she could stay at home, do nothing, and get UC of hundreds of pounds a month and we don't have to give her anything.

Secondwindplease · 22/09/2023 19:33

fluffyguineapig · 22/09/2023 19:30

She could have had a golden bloody egg and it would still be a massive achievement to get a first class degree with three disabled children. Honestly, where is the solidarity? Why does it offend you so to hear of someone achieving something?

Of course it's a massive achievement, nobody is taking that away from her, but if she's smugly telling OP that she managed it then why not explain how rather than using it as a stick to beat other parents of disabled children? I suspect it's because she didn't do it as a single parent on carers' allowance with no access to childcare. If she did then I'd love to hear how she managed as I'm in that situation myself and I'd love to do the same!

Princessandthepea0 · 22/09/2023 19:38

Her is still here. You are all so rude. I was a single mother, I also worked and I was homeless at 16. Is that enough adversity for you?
