Rupert Murdoch thinks we're all idiots?

I don't think AIBU to say that Rupert Murdoch must genuinely think his own employees and the rest of the world are idiots?

Is his resignation letter to step back and let his son takeover as Chairman the multi-billionaire media oligarch says

"My father firmly believed in freedom, and Lachlan is absolutely committed to the cause. Self-serving bureaucracies are seeking to silence those who would question their provenance and purpose. Elites have open contempt for those who are not members of their rarefied class. Most of the media is in cahoots with those elites, peddling political narratives rather than pursuing the truth."

There are only 32 people in the world with more money than him, how much more fucking elite can you get?

And then for him to talk about the media being in cahoots with the elites - he is an elite media tycoon and peddling political narratives.

How can he not cringe with the level of cognitive dissonance needed to write this?

PS: Apparently Lachlan Murdoch is even more right wing than he is so that's great Hmm

Rupert Murdoch thinks we're all idiots?

I wrote my dissertation on him some 20+ years ago. He's an interesting character to say the least.

"Most of the media is in cahoots with those elites, peddling political narratives rather than pursuing the truth."

Does most of the media include the Times? The Sunday Times? the Sun, Sky? Fox News? New York Post? Wall Street journal? The Australian? The Daily Telegraph (Aus), Sydney Herald?

Or are those all truth telling maverick publications/channels?

BlackForestCake · 21/09/2023 18:41

Given how many people buy his repulsive papers, many of us clearly are idiots.

JuliusWho · 21/09/2023 18:49

That’s the modern right wing. Mega rich, massively powerful individuals trying to preserve their wealth and power by pretending they’re fighting the system, on behalf of the little guy.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 21/09/2023 19:05

Interesting that he mentioned his Father. I've always thought that those who think Rupert Murdoch is an awful bloke clearly know nothing about his old Dad Keith. Now there was a nasty piece of work!

(On the other hand, his Mother, by all accounts, was a wonderful lady BTW.)

Can you give a précis (in a couple of paragraphs!)? I don’t know much about him, I read more about James due to the phone hacking.

I started out studying his father Keith's part in the press coverage of the First World War (esp. Gallipoli) and sort of followed on to Rupert's activites as a result. As you say he is an interesting man.

I thought Rupert Murdoch was dead!

Absolutely. And unfortunately they have the vote.

Amortentia · 21/09/2023 19:27

He doesn’t think we’re idiots, he knows it. Hence his ability to fool and manipulate enough of the British public to act against their own best interests.

Perfect précis.

"Elites have open contempt for those who are not members of their rarefied class. Most of the media is in cahoots with those elites, peddling political narratives rather than pursuing the truth."

Well you'd know, Rupes.

Ozgirl75 · 21/09/2023 19:33

This is the new “thing” by the elites though - pretend you’re not one to appeal to the little people. It worked for Trump - one of the eliteistssts people there is - he lived in a fucking tower named after him, lined with GOLD and yet managed to persuade people that he was outside the elite and working for the little people.

Murdoch's poisonous legacy

Basically he's extremely Machiavellian - sneaky, cunning and lacking a moral code. The stuff he got up to during the Wapping Strikes was unbelievable. For example the gates were blocked to deliveries by strikers which he anticipated and he emptied the heating oil tanks and filled them with print ink. I keep saying I'm going to find my dissertation and read it again.

PerkingFaintly · 21/09/2023 21:59

Please publish it, @PieonaBarm ! There are lots of depositories putting historic academic work online these days, and your dissertation sounds really valuable!

PerkingFaintly · 21/09/2023 22:02

For Rupes to suffer cognitive dissonance he'd have to believe what he's saying.

He doesn't.

He just thinks we will...
