New Tenants Coming Around

Not sure if it’s the stress of moving that has made me feel extra sensitive and unreasonable… so please give me a steer!
DP and I are moving into our first home together in two weeks. I’ve given notice on my rental and estate agency did a day of viewings and new tenants have been found. Estate Agent got in touch to see whether new tenants can come around on Saturday to take measurements for their furniture. Feel slightly annoyed by this as I’m in the midst of packing and there are random piles/ boxes everywhere and last thing I want is strangers manouvering around my stuff. The new tenants also know that I’m still living in the property and it’s not empty. Am I being AIBU if I refuse? Thanks all 💕

Say no. Yanbu. Ad you say you are in the middle of packing and they can do what everyone else does, wait.

Thanks for the steer! If I knew tenants were still living in the property I too would just chalk it up and wait for fear of unnecessary disturbing! Some people though eh ^^

It is a big deal for some people. I would hate people in my home and around all my things.

Unfortunately that’s part and parcel of renting. I spent nearly 25 years in rentals until finally getting on the property ladder last year so that sort of thing is water off a ducks back to me.

I'd say no without a second thought. I've never heard of anyone wanting to measure up in a rental and it would never have occurred to me to do this in many years of renting.

Phew! Thought it was just me! Buying a house can totally get but rental?!?!?! There was many times I had to place sheets over windows until curtains arrived etc

I've never had tenants come in before I've moved and never been into a new tenancy property (other than a single viewing) before moving day. Have rented 6 different properties.

This. There are a lot of very 'precious' people on MN. The renters could be a couple of very young enthusiastic first timers. If it doesn't overly inconvenience you, just do the 'kind' thing and let them come, at a time that suits you.

You are mistaken. For most people this would be a big deal. It's a huge intrusion at a very stressful time. I'd say, no, it's not convenient, they can wait 2 weeks

You are incorrect to say it's not a big deal when many people feel it is. If you had said it's not a big deal to me that would be correct, or maybe I think...the OP has already implied it is a big deal.

Don’t let them in.

I had similar, they left a big foot print on the floor, and then during the check out they tried to take money out my deposit for it

I'd happily let them in. It's nice to be friendly and helpful to people.

They won't care if it's messy.

There are so many mean spirited people on Mumsnet.

Update!
Thanks everyone for your sense check on this! I emailed the Letting Agency to know that it is a very busy time for me professionally (which it is as I’m going through the last of my professional exams!) and personally (as we are buying a house!) and she emailed back saying whilst she ‘appreciates’ it is a busy time she would still like if I could facilitate this as it would only take 10 minutes!!!

You don't have to facilitate anything. But if you'd like to just allow it then you'd be helping other couple out who may be slightly anxious too and wanting to know if they need to get rid of furniture etc...Once they're in and out you'll feel better about it

Absolutely say no. You have every right to quiet enjoyment of your home right up to the day you move out. You are stressed enough and have been kind enough already to facilitate viewings so that your landlord has no large gap between tenants (you didn't have to do that).

If the landlord was any good at all they would have scheduled a couple of weeks gap between you moving out and the new tenants moving in, in order to assess any wear-and-tear issues that need replacing/repairing/refurbishment (nb wear and tear is not something that comes out of your deposit) which would mean the new tenants had plenty of time for measurements then. The fact that this isn't happening should be ringing a large alarm bell - this landlord will be of the type that does everything they can think of to retain your deposit. Make sure you allow time for cleaning in your plan for move-out day and take lots of photos of the state you leave the place in.
