To think these yr3 spellings are too easy?

This week: Was, is, his, has, I, you, your, they, be, he.

Last weeks were even easier. Words like 'a, but, saw, say, said, to.' Can't remember the rest.

Surely the majority of 7/8 year olds can spell these words no problem so shouldn't really be needing to practice them again and can move on to trickier words?

They seem really easy to me too.

Smartiepants79 · 20/09/2023 18:29

Well you only need to worry about your 7 year old. Can they spell them all consistently?
If so, speak to the teacher. They do seem below the expectations for the age range but it entirely depends on the child.

MrsBinx · 20/09/2023 18:30

Way too easy. We had those sorts of words in Year 1.

Colourfulponderings · 20/09/2023 18:31

Quite a few of those were in DS’s spellings this week and he’s year 1. Is it to get them back into it gently after the holidays maybe?

Needanewcharger · 20/09/2023 18:32

@Smartiepants79 I am only worried about my 7 year old. Yes they can spell them all consistently.

Yes easy but it’s early days so doesn’t seem totally out of whack to ensure they know the basics before moving on, maybe also serves as a confidence boosting back to routine exercise. Even more so if it’s a junior school so everyone is new. I’d be worried if they don’t get any harder though.

newlystyle · 20/09/2023 18:34

My ds is in y3 and we have limitation and preferred on our list this week so definitely too easy.

Sueretiredawhileago · 20/09/2023 18:34

Maybe they got the wrong ones. Although we’ve just started Yr 4 and the first week’s ones were ridiculously easy like ‘often’ and stuff so maybe they do it deliberately to boost confidence. They ended year 3 with words I struggled to spell!!

wellandtruly · 20/09/2023 18:34

Do all children get the same words to learn? Maybe they have different sets of words.

JumbledE · 20/09/2023 18:35

I wonder if they are maybe assessing the whole class on the basic words that they should be spelling correctly by the end of KS1 before moving onto harder words. Just speak to the teacher if it continues or you're concerned. 🤷‍♀️

MargaretThursday · 20/09/2023 18:38

Very easy... but try talking to the teacher. It may be that they will put them in spelling groups, but currently they haven't and so they're doing really easy spelling that they can gain in confidence as they get them all right.
Or maybe the teacher noticed in the first week that there was a number of the class who were getting easy spellings wrong and thought this is a good way to reinforce it.

Anyway I wouldn't particularly worry, as generally spelling tests aren't a great way for children to learn spellings, so it'll probably make no difference to them.

Zhougzhoug · 20/09/2023 18:39

Yes that was Y1 for us, they got revised at the beginning of Y2. We're Y3 now and this week we've got accident, actual, address, answer, appear, arrive.

I would assume there is a reason for it - maybe a lot of them are getting them wrong. The current Y3 and Y4 were the most messed about by covid so it's all still a bit wonky for a lot of people.

morekidsthanhands · 20/09/2023 18:41

My year 3 has gymnastics, cryptic etc so easy in comparison. Maybe the teacher is easing them in at the start of the year?

BelindaBears · 20/09/2023 18:41

Yes my year 1 child has some of those this week and they’re too easy for her. Maybe it’s to ease them back in after the summer holidays but I wouldn’t be happy with that if it lasts longer than a couple of weeks.

Needanewcharger · 20/09/2023 18:46

Okay so it's not just me who thinks they are easy lol. Pretty sure we had them in year 1 too.

I also think maybe she is easing them in being the first year of juniors so maybe they're a little worried the work will be hard. This gives them a sense of achievement from the get go and boosts confidence. I still don't think it should be given as homework though, feels like a wasted opportunity. Think I'll give it one more week before I say something, I really don't want to be 'that' parent

Yes too easy. My son is in year 1 and his spellings this week are were, are, you, his, has, I, is. So very similar to your list.

Notellinganyone · 20/09/2023 18:51

Practise. And maybe they need consolidation- you don’t have an overview of the whole class. Nothing to stop you introducing your DC to more challenging vocabulary.

Teapleasebobb · 20/09/2023 19:11

These are year 1 common exception words. As it's the beginning of the school year could they be recapping to see if any of the children are struggling with them?

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 20/09/2023 19:21

They are definitely year 1 common exception words. You can search for them online. It is a bit odd if there is no sen.

Needanewcharger · 20/09/2023 19:21

@Notellinganyone yes I do. Majority of the class also got them correct last week and I anticipate they will again this week because majority know these common exception words already as they have been PRACTISING and spelling them since reception. And of course we do more challenging words at home not sure what your point was sorry, just accept the easy school spellings because we do harder ones at home?

Andbreatheee · 20/09/2023 19:24

Yes way too easy, I set these as year 1 spellings!

arabellaL · 20/09/2023 19:24

Probably assessing them/embedding them for the KS1 statutory spellings before getting them started on LKS2 statutory spellings. It's very early in the year, if you're unsure of a teacher's motivation then just ask them, there will usually be a reason (I teach Year 3)

WillowCraft · 20/09/2023 19:26

I wouldn't waste time on spelling anyway. Spend time reading instead - that's a more effective way to learn spelling and grammar

arabellaL · 20/09/2023 19:27

Also, it may be that the teacher has noticed that after the summer break the children have 'forgotten' to use the above spellings consistently and they need revising. I have several children in my class who have forgotten very basic spellings since last year!

GoryBory · 20/09/2023 19:35

These words should be regularly checked.

I found they’d do these words and the move on to more challenging words but not recap the easier words and then when they came to me in secondary school they couldn’t spell the easy words.

Its possible your child needs a bit of extra help with these spellings which is nothing to be worried about but it’s most likely that these common words are re-checked after the 6 weeks holiday to remind them and make sure they’re getting them correct.
