To think these yr3 spellings are too easy?

This week: Was, is, his, has, I, you, your, they, be, he.

Last weeks were even easier. Words like 'a, but, saw, say, said, to.' Can't remember the rest.

Surely the majority of 7/8 year olds can spell these words no problem so shouldn't really be needing to practice them again and can move on to trickier words?

I remember being asked to spell precious at 8. So that does seem too easy.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/09/2023 19:39

Yes, they are easy - but there may well be children who didn't go to school for Reception/Year One, having missed Nursery and then had poor attendance in Year 2, so they're making sure what stage all of the children are at.

Tiredalwaystired · 20/09/2023 19:42

My daughter was given chenille and brioche for year three spellings so I’m not sure there is ever any rhyme or reason.

Needanewcharger · 20/09/2023 19:44

@WillowCraft tbh I agree. Kid does read a lot though which is why they/I think the words are super easy as they read/write them nearly everyday. Currently going through a Roald Dahl obsession lol

@GoryBory I get what you're saying but my kid doesn't need extra help with them. They 100% know these words as do majority of the class, they all aced the test. I do accept it may just be a little recap as mentioned in my pp though

@Tiredalwaystired I dont know why but this made me laugh 🤣

They're all Reception words.
At a guess, they've been set as 'confidence boosters'. Definitely speak to the school if it doesn't ramp up soon.

Yes that was Y1 for us, they got revised at the beginning of Y2. We're Y3 now and this week we've got accident, actual, address, answer, appear, arrive.

I would assume there is a reason for it - maybe a lot of them are getting them wrong. The current Y3 and Y4 were the most messed about by covid so it's all still a bit wonky for a lot of people.

The current year 3s only missed around 2 months of reception, I wouldn't say they were the most messed about as they were mostly pre school age when it happened

Needanewcharger · 20/09/2023 19:50

@NeverDropYourMooncup they literally just had sats though... it's the same kids from reception so they've definitely all been there

wineandmaltesershappyme · 20/09/2023 19:53

Very easy! Those were Y1 words for ours.
Our words this week are searching, searches, searched, hoping, hopes, accident, address, actual, hoped.

LancashireSquirrel · 20/09/2023 19:56

I would imagine these are the lower ability spellings, and the others in class have different ones. That's how it works in my class (I'm a TA).

But speak with the teacher and they can let you know the plan.

Fameinaframe · 20/09/2023 20:01

They are year 1 words. Must be a reason why they have been sent out. Ask the teacher ?

Needanewcharger · 20/09/2023 20:17

@LancashireSquirrel you'd think so but the teacher has no reason to think my kid is low ability spellings-wise. Previous years it has been split like that but this time they have all had the same spellings

OP posts:
ConsuelaHammock · 20/09/2023 20:19

They may be following linguistics phonics scheme for spelling which has a couple of easy weeks before going into trickier words. Only the teacher will be able to answer your question tbh.

CasperGutman · 20/09/2023 20:28

A friend's year 3 child has similarly easy spellings, but it's a Welsh medium school and they didn't formally start learning English until a couple of weeks ago. All writing, all reading and all school work generally has been in Welsh up to year 2. You're not about to drip feed something like this, are you?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/09/2023 20:28

They are too easy. My DD had much harder in year 5

Star11111 · 20/09/2023 20:28

My dd is year 3. Her spellings this week are:
touch, country, double, flourish, young, trouble, couple, enough, cousin and encourage.
They seem to be focusing on the “ou” sound this week.

Your ds’ does seem quite easy in comparison but there may be a valid reason why they are starting with the easier words; for example to build confidence.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/09/2023 20:29

She said she had could, should, would etc in year 3

Stating the obvious, but that was when your DD was in year 5! 🤔

I daresay she did harder maths than the OP's year 3 child too. And read books with more words and fewer pictures.

Needanewcharger · 20/09/2023 20:32

@LancashireSquirrel Also just to clarify, dc thinks they are easy too but is not complaining lol. 10/10 last week, will get 10/10 this week. Both only practised once for sake of it really, just to say the homework is 'done' and signed off on the sheet

OP posts:
CuteAsDuck · 20/09/2023 20:32

It's still quite early in the school year so maybe they have set these as revision before moving on.

TheLightProgramme · 20/09/2023 20:35

Those would have been Reception in our school. Maybe reinforcing at start of y1 for weaker readers.

Needanewcharger · 20/09/2023 20:36

@ConsuelaHammock my question was aibu to think they are too easy, not why they are, which I agree should be directed towards the teacher. I have already considered the reasons why in a pp and may talk to the teacher pending Friday's set.

drspouse · 20/09/2023 20:40

My DD is in Y5 and is a good speller but occasionally would misspell things in Y3 and they got added to her spelling list for that week - I can see her spelling "said" as "sed" on the odd occasion and getting that one. The others are really not that likely to be needed at this age.

Howmanysleepsnow · 20/09/2023 20:41

Well, my very dyslexic DS only learnt to read after Easter in y2 and even he could spell those by the start of y3 so, yes, incredibly easy for the average y3.

Needanewcharger · 20/09/2023 20:48

@TheLightProgramme if dc was a weaker reader then I would understand but they aren't. Reading over the holidays was charlie and the choc factory, the twits, matilda and James and the giant peach. All read with confidence and able to watch the movies and know what happens based on the book they've already read
