To think these yr3 spellings are too easy?

This week: Was, is, his, has, I, you, your, they, be, he.

Last weeks were even easier. Words like 'a, but, saw, say, said, to.' Can't remember the rest.

Surely the majority of 7/8 year olds can spell these words no problem so shouldn't really be needing to practice them again and can move on to trickier words?

If you google year 3/4 statutory spelling lists all the words are there they need to learn although they will also be learning a lot of spelling rules too over the next year. You could always start giving these to him if you think the rest are too easy. I'm sure she is just making sure they are all secure on the 1/2 list to look for any gaps

Theyre easier than my yr2 child's spellings. (Hold, gold, even, everybody are a few I can remember. He had 'because' last week.

Yr4 child had relevant ,actually, considerate and similar.

As others have said, several of those words were in my Y1 child’s spelling list this week so yes I would say way too easy for Y3. By contrast, my Y3 DC’s homework was to use adverbs such as “meticulously” and “cautiously” in a sentence. It may be that the teacher is recapping the basics at the beginning of term, but I would be concerned the children are not being given work at the right level.

Our Y3 spellings are quite tricky! Have a chat with your teacher if you think the level is not correct for your child.

I bought a couple of books of KS2 spellings and if dd2 had spellings I deemed too easy, we did a page of the book instead.

Mine got these in around reception/year 1. I have four children of varying abilities and this was the same for all of them. My son who has asd used to freeze when asked questions at school as he was anxious about getting it wrong, so teachers weren't sure of his abilities until they got to know him at first, could it be something along these lines?

Needanewcharger · 20/09/2023 21:36

@Scottishgirl85 your child has neater handwriting than me!

My son has just started year 3 and is on 'limitation' and 'beginning' so they are definitely too easy

When my child was in local kindergarten in Singapore, he used to bring spelling list each month. He had to prepare for spelling test. He was only 5yo back then.

My dd is year 3. Her spellings this week are:
touch, country, double, flourish, young, trouble, couple, enough, cousin and encourage.
They seem to be focusing on the “ou” sound this week.

Your ds’ does seem quite easy in comparison but there may be a valid reason why they are starting with the easier words; for example to build confidence.

I think they are my yr3 DD's spellings for this week too.

So I spoke to the teacher and she said that she is recapping common exception/high frequency words for the first half of term and will move on to trickier ones after half term. I personally don't think they need the entire first half of term to recap but fair enough.

I mean ‘I’ and ‘a’ is going a bit far. Yr 3 this week we’ve had disappear and the like

Needanewcharger · 22/09/2023 14:51

@Sueretiredawhileago haha agreed! Don't think you could misspell either if tried
