AIBU to think that the Tories are utterly wicked to drop net zero?

I think this is genuinely wicked but I guess it was inevitable with the easiness of drumming up a culture war over environmental issues to win votes. Environment is the new Brexit.

Fighting climate change is going to cost all of us thousands of pounds. So we won’t do it - to get votes.

Our children will live on an island suffering extremes of heat and fighting off refugees from uninhabitable parts of the world.

But it will save us some cash I guess.

AIBU to think this is wicked?

Sunak planning to drop net zero policies in pre-election challenge to Labour

"Congratulations everything you just said is wrong."

Congratulations, you've just quoted a shit film to look stupid.

Well done you.

My kid got an A last year so they don't need.to go to school because another kid got a c so we're good.

Congratulations everything you just said is wrong.

We're not.

It was out turn.

And Egypt held COP the following year. You know, Egypt? That other world leading climate pioneer.

MegaManic · 19/09/2023 23:50

@sleepwouldbenice
Except the poster he/she is replying to (me) never mentioned any of those things but don't let that impact your response. You stick to your climate change catastrophe narrative and anyone who says different must be a conspiracy theorist.

How very predictable

Your kid got an A in underwater basket weaving. Not all the helpful when they return to school. And all the kids getting Cs in subjects that matter don’t care what your kid got.

Dude. We are on the same side.

Heng on you probably know that. Hard to keep up!

maltravers · 19/09/2023 23:58

I haven’t read the thread I’m afraid, but I think the populace is rightly concerned about climate change and if Sunak tries to water down commitments to reduce carbon emissions he will
lose lots of votes. What sort of world do we want to leave our kids to live in?

Petimrose · 19/09/2023 23:52

Kinda makes you realise it's all creative accounting and that none of the countries re being honest because it doesn't add up

https://www.worldometers.info/co2-emissions/co2-emissions-by-country/

I dunno, I haven’t tested but I expect those raw % figures add up to 100% +- rounding

CO2 Emissions by Country - Worldometer

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Emissions by Country in the world with Global share of CO2 greenhouse emissions by country

Don’t know, but have you figured out yet how to google UK carbon emissions.

These figures are long out of date and don't show percentages or account for per capita/per person.

Frabbits · 19/09/2023 23:54

Yeah, it really is leading the way in certain areas of green tech. Seems like it's your turn to ignore facts.

And yes, I'm aware that countries take turns at hosting COP. So what? It still matters that the UK did it and so, y'know, influenced the way of things.

U.K. is 3rd in Europe for wind technology and #7 globally
UK only has one carbon capture company in the top ten, the #1 company is Icelandic and Sweden has two companies in the top ten for innovation and research. In addition the largest carbon capture facility in the world is actually in Texas.

I think you don’t really know where we stand in the world.

MegaManic · 20/09/2023 00:03

@sleepwouldbenice yep, thoroughly predictable.

Just so you know, worldometer is using 2016 figures. You might want to follow the links I posted as those are the latest available 2021 figures.

christ on crutches - it cites 2019 data which is fairly recent, and there’s LITERALLY a per capita column, it’s even sortable.

Wsmi · 20/09/2023 00:00

Oh I was wrong and too nice.

You still don't understand import, export, flights, per capita (person), population, outdated figures, new projects in other countries, and misrepresented data. Better to cling to cognitive dissonance than make a better world or get ahead of a new global industry though eh. Who wants jobs and economic growth in pursuit of a better planet!? Not you!!!

sleepwouldbenice · 20/09/2023 00:07

My comment was a general one reading the thread. If you're not quite so ignorant then maybe there's hope. If

It shows 2016 for me and just one column. I double checked for more

I'll be kind and think... Perhaps your version is local or specific to your browser but on my phone it's 2016. One column.

IslaWinds · 20/09/2023 00:08

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 19/09/2023 23:54

Sigh. And what about the >100 countries who emit less per capita than the UK ? We should be moving towards that by the same token. Maybe our 5.06t CO2e / capita could one day be reduced to Mexico’s 3.63 or even Brazil’s 2.24 on the way to 0.00

We are moving towards that.

So the answer is no. That’s all you had to say.

No, we aren’t going too slow. Think about it! This sort of societal change can’t be done overnight.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 20/09/2023 00:14

IslaWinds · 20/09/2023 00:08

We are moving towards that.

Yes exactly, because it’s working and it is making a difference.

Remember many people here are claiming we shouldn’t bother as it’s only 1% ish. The point is that all the <= 5% countries count for over 50% of global emissions.

If we are using per capita then all that shows is there’s still progress to be made as it’s not zero and most countries are already much lower. But giving up because “it’s only 1%” or “but China”, “but Canada” is nonsense.

Petimrose · 20/09/2023 00:16

IslaWinds · 20/09/2023 00:10

Sorry, but they are 2016 figures.

Yes and considering other countries including India and China have massively ramped up net zero efforts in the past year or so I don't think citing 2016, 7 years ago, has much relevance. We have slowed right down in recent years.

Defend the Tories all you want. It's your kids and grandkids who will be affected

IslaWinds · 20/09/2023 00:18

Petimrose · 20/09/2023 00:11

Far far too slowly.

Look at this per capita chart. In the 1950s UK and Canada were about the same. New Zealand was at half what we were.

They did business as usual, we started cutting.

We are now at 1/3rd of Canada and lower than New Zealand.
