I've just sat in a 3 hr hybrid meeting. The chair was online and clearly wearing an Oodie. Aibu to find this hilarious or was he being totally reasonable and I'm out of touch?

WTF NO.

I dress casually but start everyday. If it’s cold I wear a cardigan or a jumper.

this is gross!

donkra · 19/09/2023 12:53

It depends on the purpose of the meeting, attendees, workplace culture. It's pretty far on the casual side but most places it is now tacitly accepted that the WFH virtual dress code is more casual than the in-person one. Hoodies never feature in my office but they make frequent appearances on people of all levels on Teams calls.

Gellhell · 19/09/2023 12:53

It was quite an official meeting too, with international attendees.

StepAwayFromGoogling · 19/09/2023 12:56

Our work bans sportswear and hoodies on calls. I think someone would blow a gasket if a colleague was in an oodie. What next? Pyjamas? Dressing gowns?!

EvilElsa · 19/09/2023 12:56

It wouldn't bother me but also wouldn't be something I would do myself. I don't think you need to turn up in a suit and tie, but something fairly neutral/plain/no logo is more suitable. That said, clothing has no effect on their ability to speak on a subject so 🤷.

Gellhell · 19/09/2023 13:01

He was a very competent chair to be fair, but it was rather incongruous!

It is kind of chilly today.

10HailMarys · 19/09/2023 13:05

Depends on the workplace I think. We can wear whatever we want on Teams meetings, so hoodies etc are fine and nobody would bat an eyelid. I’ve never seen someone in an Oodie but last winter I definitely had Teams calls with people who were wearing fleeces, or wrapped in a blanket. I’m not bothered in the slightest what someone chooses to wear really, so this would be a non-issue for me.

this is gross!

’Gross’ seems like an odd reaction to someone wearing something for warmth/comfort. I get that you might consider it unprofessional, but gross? Really?

therealcookiemonster · 19/09/2023 13:12

next meeting, you do one better - dinosaur onesie

NerdyBird · 19/09/2023 13:22

I think a hoodie is fine if the hood is down, essentially no different to a jumper. Oodies are a bit different and even though my work is super casual I've not seen anyone wearing them on video calls.

cocksstrideintheevening · 19/09/2023 13:31

Not acceptable for client / other department / stakeholder calls for us but fine for informal team chats.

MonikerBing · 19/09/2023 13:40

When I'm in internal meetings people wear Oodie's - which is fine I think. Salaries and fuel bills etc etc

I actually don't think it would matter externally either, you never know people's financial situation. That said, it's quite possible to tilt the screen so you can only see the person's head/top of shoulders, so you don't have to know what people are wearing.

Whichwhatnow · 19/09/2023 13:44

I have previously tried to persuade myself that my Oodie is basically the same thing as a hoodie (which would be fine for our Teams meetings), but having checked how I look on camera... nah, it's clearly an Oodie and I just can't do it 😅

So I just sling a plain black hoodie on over my PJs and hope there's no reason for me to stand up at any point!

HappiestSleeping · 19/09/2023 13:52

I'd be having words with anyone in my team that did that. Working from home is a privilege and I expect standards to be maintained.

If you wouldn't wear it to the office, you don't wear it on a zoom call.

VeridicalVagabond · 19/09/2023 13:56

I think that's quite funny to be honest, but I work in a super casual environment where crocs and trackies aren't uncommon in the office, so an oodie wouldn't be that shocking in a meeting. Working from home I have my work comfies which are "lounge wear" but really, they're just bougie jammies.

Brumbies · 19/09/2023 14:01

What is an oodie?

Gellhell · 19/09/2023 16:08

@Brumbies this

LOL - you wouldn't last long at my workplace. We've always worn whatever we want on Teams calls. We all had regular home working days before Covid so remote working was nothing new to us when we went into lockdown. Since Covid, we've been allowed to wear whatever we want in the office as well. Our boss wears jeans, Doc Martens and a hoodie in the office most days.

Invisimamma · 19/09/2023 16:28

I have a hoodie on during my calls today as it's getting colder, but an oodie is a step too far.

I wear my oodie sometimes WFH for warmth but never on calls!

RunningUpThatBuilding · 19/09/2023 16:31

Fine for me as I only ever deal with internal people. Managers frequently wear very casual clothes. Everyone across the company is WFH. Today I’m wearing a Hello Kitty jumper.

Completely unacceptable for external calls though.

theemmadilemma · 19/09/2023 16:47

IT sector, so a plain smart hoodie on a call would be fine. Not an oodie.

The male US Manager that wore a sweaty vest top on video got told that was not appropriate.

Startstruck · 19/09/2023 17:46

We have a policy...which was brought about by the wearing of Odies. Basically you need to dress the same way as you would in person.

HappiestSleeping · 19/09/2023 17:48

If that's the culture, so be it. Since it was only the CEO above me, I think it would be that most of you wouldn't last long in my office though 🤣

To be fair, I'm more worried about customer meetings than internal meetings, but it is sloppy. I've been working at home since the end of the 90's but would say that there has been a massive reduction in productivity with home working since covid. Sadly.

Lovelydovey · 19/09/2023 18:55

Both I and my fellow senior manager have worn oodies on calls. It was me that recommended it to her. And we've now started a trend across our department.

I wouldn't dream of wearing it on calls with clients or the Board. But I do wear on internal calls or with my team.

It doesn't impact my ability to work so I don't see what the problem is. My house is freezing and I get very cold sat in a room working. I do also use a heated blanket on my lap for calls the oodie is not appropriate for.
