In Bluey's world there must be universal basic income

The parents are never or rarely seem to be at work. They don't seem stressed or distracted, no one seems in a rush, yet they have a lovely life with holidays, impulsive purchases of pizza ovens, friends with pools.
In fact, I don't recall any poor people in Bluey.
Is this a sort of socialist utopia? Is it a world where the characters can relax a bit, work less and still have a very good quality of life? The opposite of Ms Rabbit in Peppa?
I think it's a very good advertisement for UBI.

Lol 😂

HaddawayAndShite · 19/09/2023 06:45

Look, it’s just monkeys singing songs mate. Don’t think too hard about it.

Switcher · 19/09/2023 06:47

Many sitcoms don't mention work, it's just their home life. With you though, how do we break through to bluey world? Dads who aren't angry all the time. 😥

TookTheBook · 19/09/2023 06:49

Hmmm well the mum goes out to work fairly often, and dad is clearly a high tenured academic who occasionally pops to his desk. They work but they've got it made. I've assumed their visitors come at weekends.

Tatslookawful · 19/09/2023 06:50

Life is generally far more chilled out of UK for average people & sunshine helps. :)

mummabubs · 19/09/2023 06:52

I believe Bandit is an archaeologist and Chilli works at the airport.

MumUndone · 19/09/2023 06:53

I always assumed the mum worked and the dad was a SAH parent. The mum can be a bit stressed sometimes -see 'unicorse' episode and 'omelette' Grin

Orangeinmybluelightcup · 19/09/2023 06:55

Oo how come?

I love this lol

I think it's just a snap shot of some weekends with a rare in week one. You hear of Chilli going to work in one episode and Bandit off on a long trip in another.

Lovingitallnow · 19/09/2023 06:56

Bandit works away, somewhere in mines or something so he's week on and off apparently. There's loads of Oz reddits where they work out when they'd have bought the house and could afford it. Stripe is better off hence the pool and muffins electrical car and generally being spoiled rotten.

MsJuniper · 19/09/2023 06:57

archaeologist = digs up bones
airport = sniffer dog

I know they have jobs but honestly how much do archeologists and airport security staff earn?

I love Bluey and the family message it sends.

However.

It is obviously based on a certain type of circumstance and social circle. If you’re middle class with disposable income you’re are more likely to live in an area with people of similar income and social status. Bluey’s parents obviously set up careers before having children (Blues dad was a young teen in the 80s (yes I’m way over invested) which would make him 40+) so obviously have built up to more flexibility, meaning more family time, meaning a far better work/life relationship.

It’s still fantastic to see that it’s usually Dad who’s managing this time. Bluey isn’t without flaws. Sometimes it does fall into the old tropes of ‘Mum’s the bossy one that has to remember all the practical stuff, dad is fun and silly’. Sometimes is a tad judgemental of anything outside their middle class, high income bliss. But, it’s still an amazing show that makes me feel both less and and more guilty about how I’m raising my own children 🤣.

I would sell my soul for their house….

1Step2Step · 19/09/2023 07:12

It’s a kids show. What content do you want in there so 3-8yo’s are more socially aware ? DV, poverty, racism , hell, why not give Chilli a good dose of gender dysmorphia. Maybe Bandit can have a drinking problem and fart too much 🙄

Both those parents work and their Queenslander is pretty bog standard for a house in the older parts of Brisbane. 10 years ago you could buy one easily for AUD$500k -800k. Maybe even less if it needed a bit of renovating

gawditswindy · 19/09/2023 07:14

Bandit was away for work for 6 weeks in one episode I the kids were watching yesterday.

Justdontforgethelegofrog · 19/09/2023 07:16

@1Step2Step I definitely didn't ask for my realism in it! I'm just one of many parents who watches it and thinks 'how do I get to live more like that?' How do I get more time for playing or cooking or socialising? Because that would be the ideal right? Less time spent at work without having to sacrifice quality of life, and do you know what would give us that?
UBI!

Yes it is lively but unrealistic (also the talking dogs!)

On a side note, my DM pointed out how lovely Topsy and Tim was modelling family interactions. I had to point out they have an unfair advantage as Topsy and Tim, who are allegedly in preschool, are being played by 7 or 8 year old kids...!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/09/2023 07:26

Only ever seen one or two episodes due to the dc being too old for it when it came out - AIBU to binge watch them all as a grown adult?

Remember seeing the episode where the kids play grannies on the bus and Chilli has a crush on the bus driver.

donquixotedelamancha · 19/09/2023 07:31

There is a UBI for all the animal people, paid for by their human slaves.

SockQueen · 19/09/2023 07:32

YADNBU. I absolutely never binge watch a few after the kids have gone to bed.

They're all on Disney+ or there's a smaller selection on iPlayer.

Oysterbabe · 19/09/2023 07:41

The bit I find most unrealistic is how they have endless patience and desire to play stupid games with the kids.

Justdontforgethelegofrog · 19/09/2023 07:41

@donquixotedelamancha I did consider this theory.
Bluey- animals have evolved to be our overlords. They do all the jobs but already have money due to human slavery.
Paw Patrol- sort of the reverse of this. Humans haven't got to work anymore due to animals taking up the essential roles. So little pressure that they can dedicate more time to chickens and fishing. Also can delegate jobs to children if necessary.
