Food before 1 is just for fun. Their main source of nutrients are from milk until then.
I know it's a nightmare though, my dd is dairy free and her milk is vile, I don't blame her for not wanting to drink it

The formula used to make things like porridge counts towards allowance so if your struggling maybe look for some recipes that you can use formula with to keep up his intake

I agree he needs milk but this is wrong. Babies need food for nutrients and everything else after 6 months. If it was for fun, we wouldn't be feeding them until they're 1.

Maybe try oat milk if he likes porridge OP?

@marymungoNminge well yes of course they need food but milk is their main source of nutrients is what I meant

I know, I was just pointing out that the food before one phrase is a myth and shouldn't be said to reassure mums that food isn't important.

Neither of my children got on with milk by itself. My oldest hated formula (don’t blame him) the times we did try it so kept to nursing and not wanting to have to go through the same with my second, I didn’t even try formula. I have a mild intolerance to dairy (only an unpleasant reaction if it’s dairy with high amounts of sugar added it seems) so unsure if they may have inherited it from me. They enjoy yogurt, cheese, and foods with milk as an ingredient uncooked. I was told that was fine since they are still getting the nutrients. Both have never had dairy milk by itself and are both healthy, active children.

There are also liquid multi-vitamin supplements that you can ask your HV about and/or they may recommend them. I think there are some for babies that young but I can’t recall fully. I think some come in spray form where you just do 1-2 sprays into their mouths if you don’t want to fiddle with the syrups.

@marymungoNminge oh I wasn't trying to say food isn't important at all! Of course it is, just overall there isn't as much nutrients in food as they get from breastmilk/formula and of course babies only start off eating small amount of solids don't they, no where near enough to replace any lost nutrients from milk.
It's a minefield milk/food is, new mums have enough to worry about without stressing about this too

Are you using the powdered milk OP? Maybe try switching to ready mixed? I know mine much preferred it.

Thelnebriati · 19/09/2023 10:46

Yes, try ready mixed before you do anything else.
I can remember gagging and trying to spit out the teat because the milk had tiny lumps in it. If he takes the ready mix, its probably not that. Milk tastes disgusting and makes me feel sick even now.

My little one also hated milk, what we found was that it was too sweet for her. The moment she tried cows milk at one, she loved it.

The health visitor and infant feeding team suggested milky foods- very milky mash, yoghurts, milky porridge so she was still getting her daily amount but maybe not necessarily through the bottle.

We also changed formula and bottles but it was like a fad to her. She would drink it for a few days and then get very fussy again. The infant feeding team also suggested vari- flow teets so that she wasn’t having to suck too hard or getting bored.

I was also provided with vitamins for her when her intake became very low.

Yeah powder he's Been on since birthday he was fine up until the weaning and now just wanted food other than milk 😂 I just resort to dream feeding to get it in him
