Russell Brand - everyone knew

1000 replies

Mooshamoo · 18/09/2023 17:06

I was watching the comedian Katherine Ryan say to Louis theroux that a British comedian is a sexual perpetrator. It is now believed that she was talking about Russell brand. She said on the video "when it eventually comes out about these type of people, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, this unmentionable British personality, it turns out that everyone knew. Everyone knew. ".

I was wondering did anyone on here on mumsnet know anything about Russell brand? A lot of us lived in London when her was living there. And many women on here would have been a similar age to Russell brand . I lived in London for a year and I saw Russell brand out on a night out once. That was the extent of it. I was wondering did anyone on here have any experience with him, or know about a friend/acquaintance that had any experiences with him.

Holy crap. Your charging him with paedophilia and incest? And maybe I'm wrong but it seems you are lavishly hoping he gets cut out of his own children's lives?
Wooow. Maybe hang him from the gallows now huh. Let's watch him swing.

@FishyPoisson they won't. SS don't generally get involved unless there's a current or PROVEN situation. Ex social worker here. They're basically too busy keeping bums on seats to deal with something like this.
And there's no evidence that he's a child abuser. A 16 year old is at a legal age to consent to sex. And he's not been proven to have breached that.
You might have decided that but the law isn't with you at this point & I can guarantee you that neither will SS.

You all should have lived in the 80's as a teen. Girls were being dated by our teachers in those days. No-one batted an eyelid.

I was a teenager in the 1970s. At my friend's school one teacher (in his mid to late 20s) started going out with one of the pupils when she was 16. They ended up getting married but it was an absolute scandal at first.

bombastix · 19/09/2023 23:07

I don't buy the it was normal for 16 year olds to date much older men. More likely they had parents who found it okay. It wasn't a norm.

It's a long way from the 80s now though.

I don’t know if I believe it.

A rape victim does not ask for it. They do not stay in relationships 6 months, they never want a relationship ever again.

I went to school in the 90s and a teacher was dating a student. Everyone knew it wasn't right even then.

When I searched for his name recently on Google, he is now a principal in a secondary school.

It beggars belief really.

I'm not sure what you're saying here tbh. Plenty of rape victims stay with their rapist for many years.

He shouldn’t have his name all over the papers because nothing has been proved. The evidence hasn’t been tested in court. It is only rumours. Everyone should be protected from “trial by media”

Flufferblub · 20/09/2023 01:19

My ex husband raped me. We were married for over a decade. It took therapy to realise what had happened. In my head, I would word it as he helped himself, or he pushed for sex. I didn't want to, he coerced and I ended up laying there and thinking of England until it was over. Sometimes he'd help himself whilst I was asleep. Sometimes I'd say no and he'd carry on any way. Often a freeze response came over me and I'd just silently cry until it was over. I bet it happens every day

We might have attended the same school.

So sorry. It happened to me as well. You can’t believe it’s happening can you? The mind sort of shuts down - perhaps it’s a protection because the subconscious wonders whether if they can do this then could they kill you? It is so scary to have sex forced on you.

battgirlatheart · 20/09/2023 01:53

He so has the bad dark fairy vibe that always raised my heckles.
I have a friend who worked closely with him and he did something so vile and traumatised her that she left the whole industry

Ugh god I just remembered those sketches in Little Britain with David Williams as the teacher who married his pupil.

Barely 20 years ago.

@toxic44

When you say ‘trial by media isn’t on’.

But that was exactly what RB was doing himself. He was using his YouTube platform to make allegations about science. And cause potential harm as his fans may choose to make unhealthy choices by following his advice.

He was championing free speech.

Every single person who defends him is a hypocrite, because you are saying that an abused women does not have a right to free speech, whereas he does??

Blueink · 20/09/2023 06:05

@Messyhair321 the text exchanges ARE by the same person who went to the rape crisis centre, which suggests you haven’t watched the documentary yourself.

It also wouldn’t have been considered normal by most people in the 80s for a teacher to be involved with a 16 year old pupil, but don’t doubt you when you say that misuse of power happened at your school.

I’ve included a link about consent which is at odds with what you seem to think it is currently based on your posts. Even the law has moved on, which it can be slow to do.

Rape was legal in marriage in this country until 1992. We had teachers who had sex with under age pupils it was pretty normal. At least one of them went to prison for it in 2010 but all his pub mates held a party for him when he got out.
One law that has been passed recently is not being allowed to get married until 18.

What a load of arse.
50% of rape victims are raped in a relationship, many will stay in the relationship. Something like 1 in 6 women have been raped.

Stop making things up to discredit victims.

AShadowedMystery · 20/09/2023 07:43

I also went to school in the 90s, we had a teacher who used to 'date' pupils who had literally just left the school at age of 16. It was only the source of gossip. He was only fired when he raped a pupil in his classroom. It really saddens me how his behaviour (until the rape) was seem as acceptable - he was just considered 'one of the lads' although he must have been in his late 20s early 30s.

But at the time there was no social media, no online platforms or news sources that covered this. We were all aware of 'stranger danger' and 'dirty old men' but not warned about inappropriate behaviour of the 'normal' men who populated our lives. We didn't know any different.

AShadowedMystery · 20/09/2023 07:47

I remember he used to get 14/15 year old girls to stand on stools to write on the blackboard and then sort of 'jokingly' go to look up their skirts. This garnered laughs but think of the behaviour he was modelling to the boys in those classes. To the girls.

I remember at the time thinking I was glad I wasn't one of the pretty ones and so would not be asked to stand on the stool.

Exactly! Russel Brand isn’t the devil. He’s just a normal bloke who is at least being honest.

No wonder he carried on, he was validated and promoted for his actions.

When was he honest that he’s a rapist and grooms 16yo girls? Can you link the article?

I've watched it. I didn't think it was the same person that went to the crisis center but might be wrong.

Definitely was normal behaviour in my school, early 80's.
If the law is current I still don't know if someone can be held response if the law wasn't in force at the time of the alleged offence. Coercive control laws are current but fairly recent for example.

Nadia's story: Russell Brand raped me against a wall in his LA home

Nadia - not her real name - who was in her 30s at the time, claims she exchanged numbers with Brand (pictured) at a party before being invited to his house in 2012.

cathyandclare · 20/09/2023 08:14

@Messyhair321 The rape against the wall, lack of condom, text exchanges and rape centre visit were all reported by the same woman Nadia. I thought her story was very convincing. If it was only about the condom, she is more likely to have attended a sexual health clinic for screening and MAP.

It seems extremely unlikely that she would have planned in 2012 to falsely accuse him 21 years later. The messages suggest she was distressed and angry at his attack and he was apologetic and contrite ( well he said he was anyway.)
