A car pulled up next to the pump where my DH was filling the car.

My jaw dropped when I saw inside of it;3 small children,no seat belts,no car seats and one sitting in the front.

I got out of the car and lost my shit with their twat of a father;he at least put their seat belts on before pulling off.

Gobsmacked doesn't even cover it;how can anyone be so damn reckless with their children's safety;I normally wouldn't confront someone like that but I just couldn't leave it.

Your photo clearly shows a third car in the “aisle”. As both cars were at the pumps, there would have been a car sized gap between them

I could show you pics of where they would be right next to each other. Literally every petrol station where I live.
I can't be fucked though. You can google that. Or just open those welded shut eyes?

I’m another one that thinks you must be Inspector Gadget to see the exact logistics of three kids and their seatbelts. Could they have been sat on booster seats? Could you see their bums as well as their shoulders? Could the ‘twat of a dad’ said ‘right kids, just getting fuel, you can all choose a chocolate bar’ and then on pulling in to the forecourt all kids took off their seat belts in anticipation? So much you don’t know…what’s laughable is that they’re probably more frightened of the mad lady screaming than a car crash.

These 2 petrol stations are local to me so I use them frequently.

Depends what your interpretation of ‘loosing your shit’ is. And how you would have reacted if this man ‘lost his shit’ right back at you.
maybe he wasn’t the dad and collected the kids in an emergency? Maybe they’d just released their belts? Maybe it’s none of your business.

SeptemberSuns · 18/09/2023 11:27

Told him off??? Who are you, the police, a teacher? No you should have just reported him if you felt so strongly. YABU to treat him like a child.

LuluBlakey1 · 18/09/2023 11:44

I don't know why anyone thinks 'losing their shit' with anyone else is reasonable. Have a conversation.

MaybeSmaller · 18/09/2023 11:55

YABVU to start a barney in a petrol station of all places.

I would not have gotten involved. I would only lose my temper and flip if I or my family were being physically attacked (or possibly a child or woman stranger), and then it would be a lot worse than just words from me.......

However, I would report it.

You do not get what you want from situations by being rude or shouting, it is only low-end people who do not know this. You get much more from speaking calmly and politely to people anyway, when you make demands, shout, or swear, you get less respect and put people's backs up.

This 👆

You should have reported it if you wanted to be involved. Why on earth you thought it was acceptable to ‘ lose your shit ‘ with a stranger in public over something that is none of your business is beyond me.

It really is none of your business. You do you and he does him.

If you think it's OK to go around "losing your shit" with randomers whose behaviour isn't directly affecting you and yours, because they choose to do things differently from you then it's only a matter of time before you'll find yourself being seriously injured, or even worse.

I disagree. Safeguarding children is everyone’s business, especially when the parents are putting them at risk.

YAVU to start a thread so everyone can tell you how brave and righteous you are, but most of them do seem to be lapping it up.

Yabu
When My DS was a toddler he had this habit of clicking the seat belt off while driving. Omg i used be super afraid id be pulled up by the police .obvs i used try to find a placs to.pull in asap but youd be in heavy traffic and he would do it again
Maybe this is the scenario. Its not up to you to be the right police. Its like those covid crazys publicly lambasting people for not wearing masks ( we live in ireland and there was zero yes zero exemptions) my Dad has dementia and the palave putting a mask on outside a shop. We in the end didn't bother BUT if anyone had had a go in a shop is have flipped.. you were lucky he didnt have a go right back
