A car pulled up next to the pump where my DH was filling the car.

My jaw dropped when I saw inside of it;3 small children,no seat belts,no car seats and one sitting in the front.

I got out of the car and lost my shit with their twat of a father;he at least put their seat belts on before pulling off.

Gobsmacked doesn't even cover it;how can anyone be so damn reckless with their children's safety;I normally wouldn't confront someone like that but I just couldn't leave it.

OP posts:

It’s beyond me how anyone sitting in a car could see whether or not children in another car were wearing seat belts. No way would I say anything, “losing your shit” at a stranger is a good way to get a volley of abuse at the very least.

Willmafrockfit · 18/09/2023 10:18

you did the right thing

User2123 · 18/09/2023 10:19

I'm with you OP. I'm amazed by the number of responses telling you to mind your own business and suggesting it was an emergency situation which is highly unlikely. Some parents just don't care. Maybe they should make parents watch car crash videos in antenatal classes or read stories of children being killed instantly because they were unrestrained or forward facing at too young an age. An accident can happen at any time, even during a short "emergency" journey. Legal does not mean safe. You should feel proud you had the guts to say something, though I doubt the father will change his ways.

I agree - how on earth could you see into another car across the forecourt?

If you’re sitting in a parked car you can’t see anything below shoulder level in an adjacent car. It’s just not possible. Try it.

Illbebythesea · 18/09/2023 10:26

You’re not wrong OP, maybe it gave him a wake up call & he’ll strap them in from now on. Then again maybe he won’t 🤷🏼‍♀️ the best thing to do is call the police so he can be caught and fined - much better deterrent. Also doesn’t put you at risk of being assaulted.

WaxhamSeals · 18/09/2023 10:27

It wasn’t “literally” next to her car though - there would have been either the pumps in between or the aisle which permits cars to move through the petrol station.

If you're sitting in a parked car you can see right into the car next to you, and you can see if people are wearing seatbelts. You can absolutely see below shoulder level of an adult. And at what level do seatbelts start to come down anyway? Yep, above shoulder level!

They weren’t adults. Genuinely, you literally can’t see. I advise you to try.

There are often no aisles. There are two cars, next to each other. RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER.

Lots of seemingly blind people. Actually and metaphorically. "I don't see kids in danger, its not my business! I must mind my own at all costs!".

How very British.

I have. I can see. No clue what is wrong with your vision that you can't see.

BIossomtoes · 18/09/2023 10:33

There’s nothing wrong with my vision but yours appears to be superhuman - you can clearly see through metal.

Soontobe60 · 18/09/2023 10:34

Efficaciou5 · 17/09/2023 21:38

It really is none of your business. You do you and he does him.

If you think it's OK to go around "losing your shit" with randomers whose behaviour isn't directly affecting you and yours, because they choose to do things differently from you then it's only a matter of time before you'll find yourself being seriously injured, or even worse.

Children deserve to travel safely in a car, and if the driver of the car doesn’t care, Id hope that someone would advocate for them. Have you ever seen what an unrestrained child who has been catapulted through a car windscreen looks like?

It’s pretty obvious if children are unrestrained in a car - especially if the car is stationary.

Echoing PP why didn't you take his reg and call the police

No point, they won't do anything.

thedancingbear · 18/09/2023 10:39

Well done, OP. The world needs more people like you.

Moveoverdarlin · 18/09/2023 10:44

So many threads on here involve Mums with lack of childcare or emergency appointments and no one to have the kids, and there are always suggestions of ‘couldn’t you get a neighbour to pick them up? Can’t the brother / uncle do it? You have simply NO IDEA what scenario was happening here. A Mum may have asked a neighbour, a friend, a brother, a football coach to pickup her kids due to an emergency. Said person did her a favour and may not have had a car seat, or just assumed they’d put on their seat belts. Why do you need to lose your shit? That’s just not in proportion with the scenario. If you were genuinely that concerned, couldn’t you go over and speak to him and say ‘Hi there, I noticed none of the children are wearing seat belts. Sorry to interfere but that’s an accident waiting to happen, they really need to buckle up’ and walk away.

Are you ok?

OP saw three young kids in a car that were not in car seats. She had more concern for those kids than their own father.

Unbelievable.

Well done OP.

PrincessScarlett · 18/09/2023 10:45

You were completely right to challenge him OP but 'losing your shit' with him in front of his kids is not appropriate at all and perhaps this is why some posters are not with you on this.

Have you ever actually been in a petrol station? The photo below shows cars ‘literally’ next to each other.
If one car is an SUV such as and Audi Q7, at 174 cm height it is 27cm taller than a Toyota Aygo at 147cm.

They did when I called them, actually. Woman got a warning and told she's be arrested if seen to drive again with unrestrained children.

Your photo clearly shows a third car in the “aisle”. As both cars were at the pumps, there would have been a car sized gap between them
