Dogs Everywhere

I don't live in the UK but am just back from a holiday in Cornwall. We were shocked at the amount of dogs allowed everywhere. They were in every restaurant, cafe, pub and hotel. Two or three people with dogs would all go into a small shop, blocking the aisles for everyone else. In Port Isaac on a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon the whole harbour and uphill area was disrupted by loud and continuous barking. Dogs were running around off leash on every beach. People were clogging the narrow pavements with two or three dogs on leads, wheeling dogs around in prams and buggies, stopping outside holiday cottages for ages chatting while their dogs barked, yapped and howled and ruined the peace for the people inside.

We were genuinely wondering if the next time we came back there would be dog and owner spaces in supermarket carparks and an expectation that you should stand up on public transport to let people with dogs sit down.

AIBU to think England has gone a bit mad when it comes to dogs?

The British are animal lovers. Get over it.

HaPPy8 · 17/09/2023 20:39

We loved Cornwall because it was so dog friendly! It was brilliant.

Nevermind202020 · 17/09/2023 20:40

There are a ridiculous number of dogs (and cats) where I live in Scotland too - those at the bottom of the road start barking and then set off those a bit further up, which sets off a chain reaction of barking. I say barking, it's more irritating yapping as most of them are small fluffy things. There is poo everywhere too, from the numerous dogs that are brought to our area to be walked....poo of all sizes and shapes, often right outside our gate. It's vile!

irisretic · 17/09/2023 20:40

YANBU at all. Far too many dogs in cafes and shops these days. Awful for people with allergies or poor eyesight and a myriad of other reasons.

Dolores87 · 17/09/2023 20:41

I agree with you 😂 but I don't like dogs. I mean I get other people like them but the idea that the dog has to come absolutely everywhere drives me up the wall. Everyone's plans have to revolve around someone's dog.

I mean I think they are cute sometimes and can give one a fuss but the increasing insistence that everywhere must be dog friendly has made me like for them decrease. The vast majority of people do not have really well trained dogs. I find dogs overwhelming.

I have quite a few (small animal) pets and do like animals but I can't imagine expecting everyone else's plans to revolve around my pets or insisting my pets have to come everywhere with us.

I’ve never really thought about it but I suppose dog population will grow, cos human population is! The more young people grow up and think, now I’ve got a house I’ll get a dog… cycle continues

The Some British people are animal lovers. Get over it. I think everyone else should love animals because I do, and also adapt to my likes/needs while I never have to consider theirs.

That's what you really meant, didn't you?

SusanandMidge · 17/09/2023 20:43

We actually got talking to the owner of a small restaurant. He said he doesn't like dogs coming into the place but there is huge pressure now in touristy areas to be 'dog friendly' and you can get very bad reviews if you politely tell someone that it's a small space and not really suitable for dogs.

I hear ya! Bunch of numpties half of them. It’s the minority of dogs that are well trained and the minority of owners who actually know how to raise well mannered ones.

CordyD · 17/09/2023 20:45

Yes! I am so over dogs! Noisy, yappy and their owners seem oblivious to anyone else that may not appreciate the barking, yapping, howling. "It's just the dogs way of communicating". I don't care!
Can we have a town in the UK where dogs are banned please?

Dickheadseverywhere · 17/09/2023 20:45

🥱

SusanandMidge · 17/09/2023 20:46

Not to mention the dogs leaping up on you while the owner titters ' oh that's naughty Poppy'.

🥱

This is how I feel every time I read another post asking about dog friendly this or that, or when we are told that we have to love other people's pets and want them everywhere!

AmIAutumnalNow · 17/09/2023 20:47

Agree

It's getting harder to find a cafe that is dog free nowadays

WhateverMate · 17/09/2023 20:48

Dunno, I still prefer them to most kids including my own

I never understand why people feel the need to compare them tbh, but each to their own (I suppose).

beeny · 17/09/2023 20:50

I am so sick of dogs jumping at me and owners saying he is being friendly...
Until I get bitten

Ilikewinter · 17/09/2023 20:50

I agree and I have a dog!. Hes a nervous boy and we activley seek out quieter places, or places with lots of space, to take him, but the amount of out of control off lead dogs is insane....and don't get me started on people who leave their dogs unattended barking and yapping in caravans etc.

Get over it!

PinkTonic · 17/09/2023 20:51

I’m absolutely sick and tired of dog friendly everything. Dogs shouldn’t be in restaurants, I don’t want them anywhere near me or anywhere my food is being served and I don’t want to stay in a hotel room that’s had dogs in it. It’s bad enough outside. I walked to my local shop early one morning last week and all the way there I was dodging streams of urine running across the pavement. It’s disgusting. Neither do I want anyone’s ‘friendly’ animal sniffing at me or tripping me up.

Trevorton · 17/09/2023 20:52

Are you american? Just wondering because of the use of ‘leash’. It’s a ‘lead’ in uk. And yes, dogs (like children) are welcome in most places. I think if you swap the word dogs for children the setup and irritation is similar for a lot of us.

SusanandMidge · 17/09/2023 20:52

Most pubs and restaurants in Cornwall now reek of dogs. It is such a relief when you go in somewhere that dogs are not allowed. The place smells nice and you are not worried that some idiots will plonk themselves on the table right beside you and smile gormlessly while their dog wanders all around you.

If you are finding the discussion so yawn worthy, may I suggest you find something more interesting to occupy your time. Posting little yawn faces adds nothing to a debate whatsoever.

No I'm not American, I'm Irish.
