Dogs Everywhere

I don't live in the UK but am just back from a holiday in Cornwall. We were shocked at the amount of dogs allowed everywhere. They were in every restaurant, cafe, pub and hotel. Two or three people with dogs would all go into a small shop, blocking the aisles for everyone else. In Port Isaac on a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon the whole harbour and uphill area was disrupted by loud and continuous barking. Dogs were running around off leash on every beach. People were clogging the narrow pavements with two or three dogs on leads, wheeling dogs around in prams and buggies, stopping outside holiday cottages for ages chatting while their dogs barked, yapped and howled and ruined the peace for the people inside.

We were genuinely wondering if the next time we came back there would be dog and owner spaces in supermarket carparks and an expectation that you should stand up on public transport to let people with dogs sit down.

AIBU to think England has gone a bit mad when it comes to dogs?

I much prefer well behaved dogs to most ill behaved, rude people.

Wethers🤣

We don’t have one!

Plenty of places no dogs allowed, go in those.

There are not ‘plenty of places’ that’s the whole point. It’s dog world out there, which is bad enough, but the dogs are usually attached to utterly insufferable cunts who are completely selfish and inconsiderate. At least the dogs are innocent. I’d take the dogs over their dopey dumbshit owners.

I agree.
I'm sure this thread gets done literally every week.

I do think it's comparable to children being annoying to some people. That doesn't mean that dogs and children are similar, but they are two things that are now more commonly welcomed in places that used to be off limits.
I'd rather sit on a table next to a dog that's just lying on the floor than a child who makes loads of noise and running around, but each to their own. Just go somewhere else if you don't like it.

I’m sure you’d also be sitting next to a well behaved child than a badly behaved dog.

poor behaviour is poor behaviour in both species. Those in charge of them are the issue.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 17/09/2023 21:07

You are exemplifying the issue with some dog haters. But I'll forgive you, because I'm the better person here.

I don't need to be forgiven, thanks all the same. You are clutching at straws, some of which I have already used, so let's leave it there (unless you want to look more silly than you already do). Have a pleasant evening with the dogs.

Dickheadseverywhere · 17/09/2023 21:10

My dog’s barks are definitely less repetitive that these threads.

LemonadeSunshine · 17/09/2023 21:11

We would actively search out somewhere that advertised as 'dog free'! I prefer my meal without dog breath and fur thanks.

I don't live in Cornwall, but we do live in a touristy area. I honestly think that there are very few places now which don't allow dogs, whereas a few years ago there were only a few that did. It really is harder to find places that don't allow dogs in some areas. Of course high end hotels are less likely to allow them, but I am referring more to cafe/cheaper hotel places where you might grab a light lunch and not a posh meal out!

This was the problem. Literally everywhere we went allowed dogs. Even if there was no dogs when you went in, there was no guarantee someone wouldn't plonk themselves beside you with a smelly slobbering dog after you'd ordered. People also thought nothing of blocking the aisles in small touristy shops with their dogs, or allowing their dogs to tear around small harbours off lead. Their lack of awareness was astonishing.

Plus........
I used to love going to the park for a picnic. Last time I tried that, my food was snaffled up by a dog. ☹️

@Tiredalwaystired fair point! 😆

I much prefer dogs in pubs or eating establishments than unruly children.

Your point is?

Roiesin57 · 17/09/2023 21:12

@StarDolphins we were on a beach that was signposted very clearly as no dogs allowed until after 30th Sept, but there were still a couple of dogs in the sea constantly barking. People seem to disregard the rules more & more

Except you don't have to open 'these threads' but everyone in the vicinity is forced to listen to your annoying dog.

Id rather be in any place full of dogs than I would kids

Comedycook · 17/09/2023 21:13

I honestly do not understand the British obsession with dogs and I am British. I sometimes wonder if it's because we're such a socially inept bunch that people find it easier than trying to relate to other people. I don't find them cute at all. I can't imagine wanting one to live in my house.

Azaeleasinbloom · 17/09/2023 21:14

Love love love dogs. Have 2. Never do I take them shopping or to eat with us. They are labs . Going out without my lovely dogs is a treat.

Not been to Cornwall, but do live near a tourist area in the Highlands, and to be honest the dogs are not a problem.

Wild camping, with the human inhabitants shitting in the open and not burying it or removing it - that has been a problem. And I know it’s unlikely to be dogs, as they tend not to carry tissue paper to leave on top of their offerings. 🤢

Actually yes I do agree, it’s the owners that are the problem. I love dogs & the more I get to meet, the better. However, lots of owners are not on the ball.

A couple of years ago we were having a picnic, and a dog ran up to us and cocked it's leg all over my bag (which was sitting right beside me). The dog walker supposedly responsible for it didn't even notice as she was a good 10 meters away along with one other person and about 10 (at least) dogs of varying shapes and sizes, mostly off lead.

eggsontoastnbeans · 17/09/2023 21:14

I agree and I have a dog! I get anxious going out now as we've had so many untrained dogs charging up to our dog and then all hell let's lose. I've had the idiot owners calling me names and swearing at me when I've objected to their off lead dogs charging at us. It's bonkers, gone too far now

ChocolateCinderToffee · 17/09/2023 21:14

All these people talking about how they like 'well-behaved dogs'.

I cannot remember the last time I passed a dog that was walking calmly to heel. It used to be the norm to take your dog to puppy school but nobody seems to bother any more.

Pushpull · 17/09/2023 21:14

I agree and I'm a.dog owner. Many cafes locally are now dog friendly but are filled with owners that let them wander and bark (which I know is the owners fault not the dog but the outcome is the same).

People just seem incapable of using leads properly too. At our local play park dogs with terrible recall are off lead (even with good recall it just isn't the right place - many children are nervous of dogs and behave unpredictably, there are fields and woods behind take them there or keep on lead if you're there with children) I'm sure there are exceptions but also everyone with an extendable lead I come across seems unable to use them and I and my dog (appropriately on a lead) are tangled as fluffy just wants to play. Well mine doesnt do get your dog back.

I find some friends as well want to bring their dogs to our house. Even if they are popping round for coffee. Just leave it at home. I don't want another dog here, it's not a play date for my dog. And I don't want to bring mine to your BBQ either. Ill use my dog walker if I need to.

I think it is in part "lock down dogs" or owners but I also wonder if there is just a creeping sense of entitlement where people prioritise their own needs (because as far as I can tell it's usually about what the owner wants not the dog). Of course I'll take my dog to the beach, why would four adults need to take her into a shop. Why can't one just wait on the beach with the dog.

Mum2jenny · 17/09/2023 21:15

I am not an unruly dog owner. Most ppl do not even see my dog in a pub as she is tiny and will sleep on my lap. She weighs less than 2.5 kg
