Help! Worm in fish supper!

Hi!

should start by saying I’m a big fish eater (grew up by the coast) as well as other seafood like mussels etc. I’m used to seeing bits of stringey bits in seafood and I’m familiar with it but this wasn’t one of those normal stringey bits and I honestly don’t know what to think!

I was eating a fish supper tonight (long day at work!) and there was something that looked like a whitish/translucent worm 🥴 I’ve had a terrible bout of foot poisoning before (from salmon), if this is a worm, am I likely to get food poisoning again? Should I let the chippy know or is this just one of those things that sometimes you’ll get in fish and it’s actually harmless?

i love fish but this has put me off a little, I’ve never had this happen before so no idea anything about it but feel a bit queasy at the thought of it

i’ll post a photo below

TIA!

Tell the fish and chips shop and don't go there again.

Good luck

VickyEadieofThigh · 17/09/2023 19:41

Most cod has worms, I'm afraid.

Thebigblueballoon · 17/09/2023 19:42

Blimey. Think I’ll need to see the photo before passing judgement…

Sorry should have said, it wasn’t cod, it was either haddock or whiting (not sure which one they use!)

What?!

NannyR · 17/09/2023 19:44

Pretty common in cod, if the fish is properly cooked they are harmless.

Robotik · 17/09/2023 19:45

I’m literally never eating cod again..

fiddlesticksandotherwords · 17/09/2023 19:46

I found one once, I'd bought some odds and ends from a fishmonger to give to my cats (they sold it for that purpose) and after I'd microwaved it, I looked in the dish, and there it was. Unmistakably a worm. It definitely put me off fish for quite a while.

Sorry, trying to upload the photo, it’s not loading though and keeps saying the file is too big

It’s definitely not cod! I think it was whiting although may have been haddock

Wild fish often have worms, they don't get treated like farmed fish do. As long as the fish is properly cooked, they are harmless. I doubt the chippie had a clue they were there. It isn't a shop hygiene issue, so not much point changing chippy.

Aweebitdreicht · 17/09/2023 19:49

Yeah that’s what I wondered tbh, if it’s the kind of thing that’s always there and actually not a problem if the fish is cooked etc!

Luftfahrt22 · 17/09/2023 19:49

Sand worms are v common in cod, but not seen them in haddock before. It's the reason I always order haddock at the chippy... apparently they're edible so nothing to worry about

Ostryga · 17/09/2023 19:50

Quite normal. It’s why you have to freeze fish at a certain temp and length of time for sashimi.

Don’t worry! Won’t cause any harm other than feeling a bit put off fish for a while.

Oddearslongnose · 17/09/2023 19:52

Horribly , if you look hard enough you’ll find them in most white fish these days.
the worst is Basa, it’s riddled 🐍

Aweebitdreicht · 17/09/2023 19:52

Right, it’s finally uploaded! It looks a little hazy around the edge but it’s just the reflection against the silver spoon lol. It’s actually got a bit of detail at the top of it but it doesn’t show up well on the photo, I’m assuming that’s the ‘head’ of the worm, if it is a worm. It really doesn’t look (in real life) like a normal stringy bit of fish and I picked it off the fork and held it up and it was weirdly worm like

Anisakis

Not a problem. Most white fish carry them in the stomach (spread through seal shit). Moves into the flesh when the fish does. Often found tightly cooked

continentallentil · 17/09/2023 19:57

They are normal as PPs say

It’s not the fish shops fault

Try to forget about it..

Swishswish26 · 17/09/2023 19:59

I’m surprised if it is haddock as it is mostly found in cod (not all cod) but is the reason why I never eat it.

greenacrylicpaint · 17/09/2023 19:59

pretty normal and the reason I only eat breaded fish

it's unlikely to cause food poisoning.

HillyHollock · 17/09/2023 19:59

I've found big (way bigger than that) worms in Monkfish. I try not to be 🤢 about it.

Don't eat any fish again then

WhatapityWapiti · 17/09/2023 20:00

I can’t really think that there would be any health difference between eating a cooked worm and a cooked fish.

fairyfluf · 17/09/2023 20:01

Really? So people just eat worms in their fish all the time and it's ok?

I'm never eating fish again. Is it all fish?
