Help! Worm in fish supper!

Aweebitdreicht · 17/09/2023 19:38

Hi!

should start by saying I’m a big fish eater (grew up by the coast) as well as other seafood like mussels etc. I’m used to seeing bits of stringey bits in seafood and I’m familiar with it but this wasn’t one of those normal stringey bits and I honestly don’t know what to think!

I was eating a fish supper tonight (long day at work!) and there was something that looked like a whitish/translucent worm 🥴 I’ve had a terrible bout of foot poisoning before (from salmon), if this is a worm, am I likely to get food poisoning again? Should I let the chippy know or is this just one of those things that sometimes you’ll get in fish and it’s actually harmless?

i love fish but this has put me off a little, I’ve never had this happen before so no idea anything about it but feel a bit queasy at the thought of it

i’ll post a photo below

TIA!

Don't eat any fish again then

Er, I am OK with there being worms in wild fish. It happens.
I was replying to someone saying don't use that chippy again, which will make no difference.
No idea why you are telling me not to eat fish again.

Maddy70 · 17/09/2023 22:24

Most fish have worms i am surprised you haven't seen them before.
It's gross but harmless as long as its cooked

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/09/2023 22:24

I’ve gone right off fish🤢

HeatherMoores · 17/09/2023 22:29

Oh dear. are you ok OP?!

ArtCollection · 17/09/2023 22:30

I think people will keep eating fish, even in the face of your shock.

It seems many people aren't going to actually. It is shocking how little knowledge people have though. Fish contain worms...well yeah. 🤷🏻‍♀️

HanarCantWearSweaters · 17/09/2023 22:32

I’ve worked on fishing vessels and also a land factory, them fish be full o’ worms 😉

In the factory you have acceptable limits of worm burden that varies by species. Barracuda, which was destined for China and Korea and I would hope is turned into animal food, had a limit of 50%. I would often pick up a fillet the length of my arm where one half was a dark pink flesh colour and the other pure white, becuase every millimetre of that side was covered by a white worm.

BonnieBe · 17/09/2023 22:34

Ok I have eaten my last fish 🤢

Annaishere · 17/09/2023 22:36

This is so disgusting. People should be told this

WellPlaced · 17/09/2023 22:37

And this is why I’m vegan

Do you still eat fish??

TheGreyRockess · 17/09/2023 22:39

Did it wriggle?

FucksSakeSusan · 17/09/2023 22:40

Parasitologists don’t eat sushi.

If it’s cooked, it’s fine.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/09/2023 22:41

It's weird being an actual Barracuda then if your entire body is being eaten my worms!

No wonder they're such aggressive, grumpy fish (and attack all the other fishes!) They're just in pain from being eaten alive!

Annaishere · 17/09/2023 22:43

If it’s cooked it’s not fine to eat worms !

Do you still eat fish??

Oddly yes! Grin Though I avoid some of my most memorable wormy species.

@LaurieFairyCake explains it doesn’t it! Who wouldn’t be so full of rage with that many internal groupies

WellPlaced · 17/09/2023 22:48

I’m off to eat some aubergine pasta 👍🏼

This.

How do people not pick up this knowledge along the way? Do they not read and watch things at the very least?

I think the truth about many foods would blow their tiny minds.

HelterSkelter224 · 17/09/2023 22:53

Why did I read this thread

Switcher · 17/09/2023 22:59

How did people not know this? Surely you've seen it any time you're filleted a fish or even watched the fish monger. There's nothing wrong with it. Bit of extra cooked protein. Only potentially a problem in sashimi that hasn't been frozen.

AllergyPlus · 17/09/2023 23:00

Ha. Zero sympathy from me.

Suppose you eat shrimps too. Hope those put off eating fish because of a little worm are likewise put off eating sea bugs too.

I maybe wouldn’t eat raw cod/hake/haddock/pollock, but that would be some weird sushi anyway. If you’re cooking commercial U.K/EU species, I’d honestly say you’re good. It’s all the weird and wonderful export market ones I saw when I lived in the southern hemisphere that stick not so fondly in my memories.

Even though about 1 in 4 cod will have some kind of worm burden, the vast majority of parasites are removed in processing either at sea or in a second run on land. Especially if they’re on freezer boats, they only need to be frozen a couple of days to kill all worms.

If you’ve got unbreaded fillets or whole fish yourself you’re filleting at home, you can hold the fillets up to light and look for dark lines or shadows. Quick trim with a knife and you’re golden.

Floppyelf · 17/09/2023 23:11

With climate change, expect to be eating more worms in your fish. Its a result of warmer sea temperatures etc.

Neverwatchedgameofthrones · 17/09/2023 23:31

I found out this was a common thing years ago and have never eaten any fish since. No thanks.
