Help! Worm in fish supper!

Aweebitdreicht · 17/09/2023 19:38

Hi!

should start by saying I’m a big fish eater (grew up by the coast) as well as other seafood like mussels etc. I’m used to seeing bits of stringey bits in seafood and I’m familiar with it but this wasn’t one of those normal stringey bits and I honestly don’t know what to think!

I was eating a fish supper tonight (long day at work!) and there was something that looked like a whitish/translucent worm 🥴 I’ve had a terrible bout of foot poisoning before (from salmon), if this is a worm, am I likely to get food poisoning again? Should I let the chippy know or is this just one of those things that sometimes you’ll get in fish and it’s actually harmless?

i love fish but this has put me off a little, I’ve never had this happen before so no idea anything about it but feel a bit queasy at the thought of it

i’ll post a photo below

TIA!

You're ok with eating fish, why have an issue with eating worms.

QuitMoaning · 17/09/2023 20:03

My partner is a chip shop owner and he says:
yes, it looks like a worm from white fish but it is absolutely harmless. You can get them in haddock as well as cod and other white fish.

It is more common in fresh fish but if the fish is caught and frozen at sea, they use ultra violet light to find the worms and cut them out as they are off putting but they are harmless. Health and safety know about them and they are deemed part of a natural product.

I know all this but if I found one I admit I would lose my appetite.

What’s the logic behind that though? It’s all animal matter, and won’t do you any harm.

Tell that to a pescetarian

Grapewrath · 17/09/2023 20:11

Wow that’s gross
Glad I don’t eat it. Sounds like it isn’t a risk though op

Because worms are parasites, probably.

I've found big (way bigger than that) worms in Monkfish. I try not to be 🤢 about it.

Oooh me too!! Monkfish worms are horrific. It’s really put me off fresh fish. I tend to only eat frozen now - much fresher too.

Funny place to draw the line. Fish ✅ parasite ❎

archimedesconstant · 17/09/2023 20:38

There’s been a thread like this before, most replies confirming fish is pretty wormy. Has really put me off 🤮And yes I’m happy eating fish but not worms, I think most people feel the same even if it’s not logical.

Missingmyusername · 17/09/2023 20:43

Yes fish have worms, it’s common.

That's why I don’t eat fish!

SorrowsPrayers · 17/09/2023 20:46

Many years ago I bought some fresh cod from Sainsbury’s. When I opened the package I immediately noticed about three worms.
I took the fish back and got a refund.

Alopeciabop · 17/09/2023 20:53

Chefs in restaurants will often be in the kitchen pulling the worms out of cod for your fish n chips. It is gross but it is normal.

IsleOfPenguinBollards · 17/09/2023 20:53

I remember reading someone’s account of working in a fish processing factory in Iceland. They removed bones and worms and were expected to get nearly all of them out of the fish, but to miss one or two bones/worms per case was considered acceptable. Goodness knows how many worms were there to start with.

I found a red worm in a fish once. I’ve never noticed a white one, so I’ve probably eaten those accidentally.

ArtCollection · 17/09/2023 22:01

Because worms are parasites, probably.

Then don't eat fish then. I'm always shocked that people don't realise if they eat meat/fish, these risks are there. Do they think it's all just perfectly clean at the butchers or pre packaged in Tesco's..

Hemera2023 · 17/09/2023 22:06

Found a big worm in a monkfish once and I haven’t been able to eat it since!

Highdaysandholidays1 · 17/09/2023 22:09

I'd forgotten about the cod worms thing, this thread has reminded me and put me off getting fish and chips! Although I haven't seen a live wriggly one in about a decade.

Horribly , if you look hard enough you’ll find them in most white fish these days.
the worst is Basa, it’s riddled 🐍

I'm never eating basa again...

I think people will keep eating fish, even in the face of your shock.

Well I’m not buying fish again

ohsuzannah · 17/09/2023 22:17

I bought two lovely cod fillets from our fishmonger. Cooked them and there was quite a big worm inside. I asked about it the next time I was there and he said it's normal. I must admit it did put me off cod, and it used to be my favourite fish!
