I quite like to play games ( Candy Crush, WWF etc ) but absolutely refuse to spend any money on them.
So my little act of rebellion is that , when they put an advert on, I refuse to watch it! I close my eyes for the 15-30 seconds and zone out …. And in my eyes , I’VE Won !
what’s you’re little act of rebellion ?

I do this too!

I refuse to engage with any crap advert!

Vallmo47 · 16/09/2023 20:43

Similarly, I mute the tv during adverts and just glance up now and again to see it hasn’t started.

I’ve also started contemplating always filling in forms with “I prefer not to say” options wherever possible - why should they have all that information on me if I can just opt out.

foulksmills · 16/09/2023 20:44

I bet the advertising companies are working on how to force our eyeballs to engage with the ads a là Black Mirrors A Million Merits

GeraltsBathtub · 16/09/2023 20:46

I never buy anything I’ve seen advertised, deliberately. In fact on a few occasions I’ve seen adverts for things I already buy and have stopped buying them in response! I don’t have a tv and use an ad blocker on my computer/phone so fortunately don’t see many now.

cariadlet · 16/09/2023 20:49

I have some games (like solitaire and a number puzzle game) which work without the internet.

I always switch off wifi on my phone when I play so that the adverts don't appear.

toadasoda · 16/09/2023 20:58

If an ad is annoying I make a mental note to never buy this product or if I already buy it I consider changing.

I don't buy anything shipped from afar if I can avoid it, it feels very wrong to me. For example buying Australian wine when Europe produces so much. Same with vegetables and fruit I'd rather wait till strawberries come back into season than buy Egyptian ones in winter.

I never buy amazon unless I am really desperate because I refuse to line the pockets of a billionaire, especially when I've heard staff are not treated so well.

If i order food via an online app I refuse to tip delivery online as I don't trust the delivery guys get it so I pay them cash.

I never buy really cheap clothing as I cannot imagine that a cotton farmer got well paid if a T shirt retails for 3. Second hand or mid range is fine. I also never buy high end designer as its just BS brand making already rich people richer.

I never ever purchase a perfume that's endorsed as a celebrity perfume. You're a singer, go sing and F off with your perfume!!!

I continually fool myself that my little moral objections are going to change the world.

Applescruffle · 16/09/2023 21:11

There's a lady that works at the at the local tesco that I inwardly call "crazy bag lady."
She works between the self check outs and the "scan as you shop" bit and she always seems to be on shift.
She is absolutely OBSESSED with stopping people from stealing bags. It's all she seems to focus on. And she'll often ignore people asking for help because she's busy weirdly watching people to make sure they're not stealing with a look on her face like some determined suspicious headmistress.

I do not steal the bags. But she will pounce on me "HOW MANY BAGS DO YOU HAVE? HAVE YOU SCANNED THEM? MAKE SURE YOU SCAN THEM! SCAN THEM RIGHT NOW! I WILL STAND HERE AND MAKE SURE YOU SCAN YOU CAN NOT BE TRUSTED! YOU WWRE GOING TO STEAL BAGS AND YOU WILL NOT GET PASSED ME! I AM THE GUARDIAN OF THE BAAAAGS!" and I really do resent the implication.
I politely pointed out that actually I do mog need to scan them as I go because the checkout will aks me at the end and I can just input tbe number.
She did not like her authority on bags being questioned and said "NO YOU MUST SCAN THEM NOW BECAUSE YOU WILL FORGET AND WILL LEAVE WITHOIT PAYING FOR YOUR BAAAGS!!

I absolutely refuse every time she tells me and I will die on this hill. I will not scan my bags thank you, I am quite happy with the just punching in a number method and you can stand over me and count all ypu like but you will not catch me out, crazy bag lady.

It's a small act of rebellion but I absolutely will not let her get away with treating me and everyone else like we are 12 years old and she owns the local newsagent.

@toadasoda if more people were like you (and me) then it will make a difference.

Failingatthemoment · 16/09/2023 21:54

Until then we can enjoy the moral high ground!!!

Oldraver · 16/09/2023 22:34

On YouTube you sometimes get asked a question about this or that

I always press prefer not to say

longestlurkerever · 16/09/2023 23:00

Lying on surveys. And if I ever use my clubcard, buying something totally out of character to mess with the algorithms

cassiatwenty · 16/09/2023 23:06

I don't use Netflix anymore. Life just feels better without (most of) their depressing rot content

Or when Youtubers go "please like and subsc.." I click X

BrendaMcPherson · 16/09/2023 23:20

On the Duolingo app when I have to watch an ad to earn an extra heart, I just put my phone down for 30 seconds and get the heart without having to suffer the crap adverts

I always press a random answer on the questions Mumsnet asks.

Potterylady13 · 17/09/2023 09:09

Junk Mail I put back in the pre paid envelope and send back so they have to pay for it (obviously not completed)

MWNA · 17/09/2023 15:07

On TikTok, if they say "watch till the end" I never do. I immediately scroll past, no matter how interested I am.
Can't tell me what to do.

Roiesin57 · 17/09/2023 18:36

@cariadlet I gave up playing my word game cos of the adverts.
Switched off WiFi & mobile data off on my phone & my game still works. Thanks for the tip!
