AIBU to book a wheelchair space

I know I might 100 percent get slaughtered for this and I probably deserve it.
my daughters birthday is coming up and she wanted to see a certain show last year which sold out very quickly. It is coming back this year and the tickets are going quickly again. She is a wheelchair user however she can get out of chair. Due to a really hard year ( recently lost DP ) I wanted to get her tickets for her birthday trip.
I went on site and the only available tickets were 130 plus per ticket.
it’s a lot due to recent circumstances and going from 2 wages to 1 so suddenly.
she uses her wheelchair daily for getting to places like to school and back, shops etf but can walk short distances ( she has 2 organ failures, concratures in legs, and attached to an IV )
however she could make it to a seat as I can take the pumps of chair in to bags and then re attach them after for the journey home.
the wheelchair seats are buy the 100 plus seats but are given at the minimum ticket price of less that 40.00 and can also can book an assistance ticket for free next to wheelchair seat.
i keep going to book it but then keep remembering I’m morally wrong as I can transfer her !
then I lose my morals again and think well it’s ok. I’m over thinking this but it is very morally wrong right ?

Buy the seat.

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 16/09/2023 14:51

How is it morally wrong if she is a wheelchair user?

PicturesOfLily · 16/09/2023 14:51

There is nothing wrong with this at all. Book the seat and have a lovely time!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/09/2023 14:52

Do you really have to ask? Buy the ticket and don’t think twice about it. You are totally entitled to it.

Pandamumium · 16/09/2023 14:52

Get the disabled seat. She is entitled to it.

Ghastisflabbered · 16/09/2023 14:52

Your daughter uses a wheelchair and those spaces are designed for wheelchair users.

I’d book it.

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 16/09/2023 14:52

I thought at first you were going to say you'd borrow a wheelchair off someone! She is a wheelchair user - no issue.

TheFireflies · 16/09/2023 14:52

She is a wheelchair user and I expect she’d be more comfortable with less fuss made if she stayed in her wheelchair. Book the seats.

Southwest12 · 16/09/2023 14:53

She's a wheelchair user so you are entitled to book the seat. Book it and enjoy yourselves!

WavyLines11 · 16/09/2023 14:53

Not morally wrong at all- she is a wheelchair user.

Book it!

Thesearmsofmine · 16/09/2023 14:53

Book the tickets and enjoy the show

Leolion09 · 16/09/2023 14:53

I am also an ambulatory wheelchair user, but I need it for a reason, so does your daughter. 100% book the seat and have a great time!

Shudacudawuda · 16/09/2023 14:54

She's a wheelchair, she is who those tickets are for. Buy the tickets!

Legale · 16/09/2023 14:54

Your daughter is a wheelchair user, she is entitled to the seat. Book it, there's no moral quandary!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 16/09/2023 14:54

My goodness it isn't as though she used a wheelchair once in hospital 10 years ago after an asthma attack. She is a regular wheelchair user who is reliant on it for her independence and mobility. Book the bloody seat and have fun!

Iknowitswrong15 · 16/09/2023 14:55

Thankyou I am just aware that it’s a wheelchair space not a disabled space if you know what I mean, because she can walk and get to a seat I have never felt entitled to book one !
you have made me feel better !

It’s absolutely fine! Lots of wheelchair users can technically transfer to a chair, but this isn’t always easy to do especially if you have a pump and bags etc and also you can’t guarantee an aisle seat etc. There also won’t always be anywhere to leave a wheelchair; I’m a special school teacher when I booked tickets to see a show with my class of students I booked all regular seats the only two wheelchair user can transfer for short distances but when we arrived the theatre actually asked us to sit with them both in the wheelchair space which still had empty seats because there was nowhere we could safely leave the wheelchairs without blocking an exit route and they were worried it would be difficult for the two students to safely evacuate in an emergency if his chair was left in the foyer. Your daughter is a genuine wheelchair user and entitled to an accessible seat so absolutely do not feel guilty about using one just because technically she could sit in a regular seat, especially when in practise the logistics of it would be difficult.

countvoncount · 16/09/2023 14:56

Totally buy the tickets, have a great time
You sound lovely btw

DappledThings · 16/09/2023 14:56

Not even vaguely a dilemma. She is entitled to the space, take the space.

PinkyU · 16/09/2023 14:56

Definitely book the accessible seats, if for nothing else than if there was to be an emergency evacuation getting your dd plus pump bags to the gathering point would be dangerous. She needs to be in her chair and accounted for as a wheelchair user for evacuation purposes (access, stairs, different exists etc).

Wrongsideofpennines · 16/09/2023 14:56

Lots of wheelchair users can transfer. But where would you store her wheelchair once she'd transferred out and then she'd made her way to a seat in the middle of the row. And then what if she needed the loo in the interval or something and staff have to go off to a cubby hole somewhere to find where they stored her wheelchair. Honestly, just book the wheelchair ticket.

thiswasabadone · 16/09/2023 14:57

Book it now

AprQ · 16/09/2023 14:57

She’s a regular wheelchair user, why wouldn’t you book it? Some wheelchair users are able and prefer to sit in standard seating however they wouldn’t be wrong if they chose to sit in their wheelchair in a wheelchair space.

You’re overthinking it, it’s literally for her! It’s not like you’re renting a wheelchair, placing her in one just to book the seat and get a carer ticket!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 16/09/2023 14:57

Buy the wheelchair seat. Her wheelchair will be more comfortable, more dignified & less hassle than transferring her.

TheHolyGrailSpeaks · 16/09/2023 14:57

Absolutely not unreasonable, she is a genuine wheelchair user and exactly the sort of person these seats are intended for.
