To enter the supermarket with my cat in the carrier

We're going to the vet to get his annual vaccinations and I have to go to the supermarket next door to buy two things quickly. I don't know if they will let me get in with the cat in his carrier.

I’m guessing the “we” is her and and then cat.

but no you can’t take your cat into a supermarket

You can’t take your cat into a supermarket but you can let your child stand in the trolley with cat/dog/human shit on their shoes…. This really is a major bug bear of mine!

Do you class anyone with an assistance dog as entitled?

No, I don’t class anyone with a guide dog as entitled, because that is a necessity for them and guide dogs are exceptionally well trained exactly for that purpose.

It is not a necessity to bring in a cat 🙄

Assistance dogs are not used specifically as a guide dog 🙄

I deliberately used the term “guide dog”.

FijiSea · 15/09/2023 17:19

No don’t take a cat into the supermarket .

  • other people including STAFF could be allergic
  • the cat could pee and leak and the STAFF would be left to clean up cat pee
  • don’t put it in a trolley , people put loose veg etc in trolleys , a cat being there previously where food was going to sit is gross!

Just go home after the vet and use an app like Snappy Shopper to get a few essentials from your local shop delivered to your door.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 15/09/2023 15:43

Can't you just do the vet visit first then ask the receptionist if you can leave the carrier and cat in reception for 5mins while you nip to the shop?

I’d do this

Doingtheboxerbeat · 15/09/2023 17:23

It wouldn't even occur to me to ask - I would just do it. As for allergies, well I'm afraid many people don't drive so I see the odd cat carrier on public transport.

For the people saying you can't take an animal into a supermarket...people take dogs, both service and regular, into supermarkets so what would the difference be? The cat would be in a cage, not running free.

There are different rules for service dogs. People don't routinely take pet dogs into supermarkets, they wouldn't be allowed in.

FijiSea · 15/09/2023 17:26

Regular dogs are not allowed in supermarkets.

Ohthatsabitshit · 15/09/2023 15:44

No of course you can’t take an animal into a food shop. Ask someone to watch it while you go in

Do you imagine there will be a mass outbreak of listeria if a few people come into distant proximity to a cat?

I seriously wonder how some mumsnetters dare to leave the house or even more scary, cross the road by themselves.

Stay safe! 👻

They do! Always dogs in my local supermarkets.

OMG.
How are you even still ALIVE? 🐈☠️

FijiSea · 15/09/2023 17:31

Would you take a dog or cat into any other workplace ? Like an office , a garage , a dentist ? No.
A supermarket is a workplace for hundreds of members of staff a day , why take animals into their workplace .
The entitlement on here is actually shocking.

This common sense.

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/09/2023 17:31

TheBarbieEffect · 15/09/2023 15:53

Absolutely not. It’s a animal and has no place in a supermarket amongst food.

So entitled.

Clearly not “entitled” else she wouldn’t be asking.

Wait till you hear about people who keep
pets in their houses - some of which even enter their KITCHENS. It’s a miracle these people are still alive I tell you ☠️

People seem to take dogs into restaurants all the time these days. The only law is that they're not in a food preparation area.
A restaurant isn't that, and neither is a supermarket.
But any business can ban whoever or whatever they like from their private land, and I haven't checked, but I'd I'd be surprised if any of the major supermarkets allow animals inside.

SoupDragon · 15/09/2023 17:33

AliOlis · 15/09/2023 17:28

It's a food shop.

It's a cat in a secure carrier! It's not roaming loose shitting in the carrots.

FijiSea · 15/09/2023 17:33

@GreekDogRescue It’s not about thinking you are going to die if you see an animal 😒
Its that there are rules about not having animals in shops .

Staff are allowed to bring dogs into the office where I work. It’s lovely 😊

Nothing entitled about it when the Big Boss approves it. It’s a big improvement as far as colleagues and I are concerned.

Their own animals? By their own choice? Surely I don't have to explain the difference as though you were 5 years old?

No harm in trying ... the cats in a carrier and you've only to get a couple of things .

In fact I wouldn't have even given this a second thought !

SoupDragon · 15/09/2023 17:34

A cat in a carrier is far less of a health risk than a free ranging pre-schooler.

FijiSea · 15/09/2023 17:36

@Coralsunset Sorry but I would not like dogs in my workplace office environment, if you do not have dogs , you can smell dogs and I would not want my work environment to smell of dog.
