To enter the supermarket with my cat in the carrier

We're going to the vet to get his annual vaccinations and I have to go to the supermarket next door to buy two things quickly. I don't know if they will let me get in with the cat in his carrier.

Just take him in. He's in a carrier so i don't see the problem.

Yeh and put the pet carrier in the trolley 🤣 I would x

OneTC · 15/09/2023 15:55

Wouldn't even think twice about it

SquashPenguin · 15/09/2023 15:58

I don’t see the problem. It’s not like you’re letting him roam around licking all the roast chickens.

Phos · 15/09/2023 16:04

Take him in. He's enclosed in a cat carrier. Someone mentioned pee but honestly I've never known a house or litter trained cat to pee in their carrier. They hold it like they would at home.

10HailMarys · 15/09/2023 16:06

If it’s in a carrier, it’s fine.

I saw a cat in one of those backpack cat carriers in a supermarket near me;it was a huge ginger tomcat.

There's a vets a few units down so I assume the owner had had a appointment there.

Were you in Tesco stalybridge?

SingingNettles · 15/09/2023 16:13

I tried this once before and was immediately asked to leave…

BarrelOfOtters · 15/09/2023 16:19

I did this with the dog when it was a puppy, just styled it out - no one said anything. Got a few awwws.

Cat in carrier in trolley - now worries.

My local Asda has a cat that comes inside the store and makes himself at home. He's a right little local celebrity!

Absolutely not. It’s a animal and has no place in a supermarket amongst food.

So entitled.

It's in a carrier. It's enclosed. It's having zero contact with any food or with other shoppers and is therefore having no impact on anyone.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/09/2023 16:32

I would just take him in - he's in a carrier, he's no dirtier than the humans in there, and anyone who's so allergic they are at risk from this would already be dead from the cat fur on all the cat owners' clothes.

That ASDA cat is taking it too far though.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 15/09/2023 16:33

I take my six month old kitten with me everywhere I go in a back pack carrier x never had an issue in any kind of shop - in fact people love it, supermarket workers included. Hold onto your hats but - gasp - he even goes to the pub with me and I have him out on a lead. He comes to my shop with me everyday. If a cat is chilled because he’s been socialised early and you’re in tune with it’s signs and signals of potential discomfort and respond appropriately it’s no different to having a well trained dog. JMHO of course - and a bit of experience ☺️

SquashPenguin · 15/09/2023 16:33

@BarrelOfOtters Id laugh if I saw a cat on the shelf like that!

When my black pug was tiny my partner sneaked him into Asda tucked inside his black jacket. Not a single person noticed until we got to the till and cashier wanted a cuddle 😆

wednesdayatone · 15/09/2023 16:33

Leave the cat in the car for 5 mins

No of course you can’t take an animal into a food shop. Ask someone to watch it while you go in

Animals are allowed in loads of environments that sell/serve food, though. It's not a legal issue; it's just down to the shop to decide. There's a coffee shop near me with a resident cat. He has a special cushion in the window.

It was me who mentioned the cat peeing. I was once sitting in the vets waiting room with my cat in a wicker basket on my lap. A dog started barking and I ended up with my jeans soaked in pee. Never did get rid of the smell, had to chuck them out.

It was from the cat right?

Even if you only want a few items, grab a trolley, put him in, get your bits, Bob's you Uncle.

I can't get worked up about it. I've seen people scratching their arses/balls and picking noses in supermarket, and then touching the produce. That's just as bad, possibly worse.

Marwoodsbigbreak · 15/09/2023 16:49

My huge local Tesco has no problem with animals. Aside from dogs and cats, I have also seen a fox on a lead, and a little pig.

Just do it OP!

Do you class anyone with an assistance dog as entitled?

Vinorosso74 · 15/09/2023 16:52

I don't see a problem as he's in the carrier. As someone else mentioned the humans shoppers can be pretty grim! For the cat's sake though, I would ask the receptionist if you could leave him there while you pop next door.
I had to take our old cat into the local pharmacy, before closing time, en route home from the vet. I was buying some of the test strips for the glucometer for her as she was diabetic. DD stood by the door with her in the carrier. We did get a couple of odd looks but we were in and out quickly.
