Coughing lady at the movies

HibiscusAndPineapples · 15/09/2023 14:52

Went to the cinema to watch a film, and the lady seated behind me spent the better part of the entire runtime coughing. It wasn’t just muffled coughs here and there either, but full on, loud, non-stop coughing.

Any quiet/tense moment in the film was completely ruined by loud coughing.

AIBU to think that anyone with a cough as loud and relentless as this should just stay away from the cinema?

I am asthmatic and prone to coughing. I tend to keep away from anywhere public (especially since Covid years when a slight ahem brings dirty looks!).

When I was at university, one lecturer would throw coughers out of lectures. There was hardly any coughing after that.

Good on your lecturer. So distracting - along with constant whispering (I have ASD). Used to record the lecture on dictaphone, and you could hear it drown out the actual lecture. Phlegm chorus I used to call it. Funny how people weren't coughing so much before and after the actual lecture

Lifeinlists · 17/09/2023 13:17

@Floogal
That took me back to my first lecture where several students got their fag packets out and started smoking!! The lecturer said nothing. I was Shock

It didn't happen often but was allowed in those neolithic days.
Perhaps they developed smokers coughs and never ventured out again.
Or perhaps that's who was in the cinema!

I can't honestly think of any reason why someone would go to a cinema if they had a bad cough.

Absolutely selfish and ignorant behavior. Not only from a health aspect, but they are also spoiling the enjoyment of others, who have paid good money to watch a film.

She should stay away out of normal human consideration. Having a chronic illness doesn't entitle you to spoil several other people's entertainment that they've paid quite a lot for. It's not fair on everyone else, and it's highly unlikely that she wouldn't be able to watch the film at home.

Thats so othering

These patronising comments where the poster is trying to be "clever" are just annoying and wankish!!

You are right to be annoyed OP, it's selfish behaviour.

Indeed. Candidates for the mumsnet passive aggressive thread.

As discussed because they are disabled and dying and it's on their bucket list

I've read some outlandish things on MN but think this may take the biscuit. As usual things are taken to extremes as opposed to the normal irritating people in cinemas.

MartinChuzzlewit · 17/09/2023 16:43

Why do people think that just because someone has a noisy condition that they must be upset or mortified about it? Why can’t they be a person who doesn’t give a shit about how it impacts others?

I worked with a man who had bronchitis who would spend ALL DAY hocking up and making revolting sounds and he openly took delight in making people feel sick. I though he could at least have, a few times, left the office to do his worst cough

Going to the cinema is not a god given right. It’s inconsiderate as fuck to go and make noise and make no effort to be away from others

LastHives · 17/09/2023 16:46

One time I was at the cinema and a person was shouting out "no. no. no. no " or "yes, yes, yes, yes" all the time. It was a very quiet film "Suffragette" and it did spoil it as we could barely hear the soundtrack. Several people must have complained as someone came in and spoke to who I assume was a carer. They eventually left.

No it describes my sister very well she has COPD and cancer as well as being in a wheelchair due to crippling arthritis I take her to cinemas and she coughs get over it.
There are many people in this world with chronic disease that means coughing there are many ignorant people who don't give a shit

housethatbuiltme · 17/09/2023 18:26

Why do able people think their 'offense', 'dislike' or 'irritation' at disability side effects should remove the disabled persons rights?

No one gives a fuck what you personally 'like' or 'dislike'. Or if you deem disability as 'rude' or 'mannerless', no we don't have to constantly apologist and act mortified just for existing.

I was in HOSPITAL once when some bitch had a go at me about how the noise of my foot dragging from my limp was rude and 'mannerless'... the only mannerless person was the twat picking on a disabled person.

Like why does she think her 'dislike' of shuffling come above me just minding my buisiness and living my life. She is/was not the center of the universe and neither are PP who think their 'comfort' is all that matters.

If I could just 'pick up my feet' don't they think I fucking would? its ME that has to constantly buy new shoes and is covered in scars from falling and hurting myself, I dont do it for 'laziness'.

Remember we are pretty much the only minority you can unwillfully join at anytime... and almost everyone eventually does.

As for the person telling other cinema goes off for eating... the cinema makes the majority of its income selling food and drink. Maybe try supporting the cinema so its actually still there in future rather than thinking your 'dislike' for something takes priority over the business and everyone else.

Wanderingllama · 17/09/2023 18:37

This is why cinemas and theaters will die off. Because keeping to simple "silent so everyone can enjoy" is too much to ask and met with "but what about".
There is a timr and placr and not all times and places are suitable fot everyone.
So us who actually want to enjoy the performance or movie should just sit at home...ok. Lots of us started. So did closures

Yeah @housethatbuiltme I didn’t want to say that but I was diagnosed with cough variant asthma in my 40s and it has rapidly got worse. Last winter I could barely go out in public because of it. And I could hardly breathe either.

These people going on about coughing and germs and “clearly being ill” had better watch out, it could happen to anyone.

Gingerwarthog · 17/09/2023 20:50

Poor woman behind us in pub the other night had a sneezing fit that lasted ages followed by blowing her nose etc. That didn't bother me - her husband constantly picking his teeth with his fingers did!

So disabled barred from cinemas and theaters, buses and shops at rush hour, hey I know why not just put them in homes. I guess you have no experience of disability YET

I hope they complained to the management for breaking the law.

My father had heart disease impacting on his life and recieving full disability card. He liked nature but didn't join hiking group and making everyone go slow and rest every 15 min. Not everyone can do everything.

Sometimes people have to give up some things. Essentially everyone does actually at some point of their life. I don't know how not making loud and continous noise at cinrma morphed into disabled people being banned from shops. Confused I am assuming But olympics competition here.

MartinChuzzlewit · 18/09/2023 09:24

This thread is bonkers. The likelihood is the woman just had a cough yet people are diagnosing her with a disability

Respiratory disease as opposed to colds and illness affects 1 in 5 of the population so if there are 30 in a cinema 6 will have some form of Lung disease so how can you say the chances are it isn't?

MartinChuzzlewit · 18/09/2023 09:39

@jannier this doesn’t follow that 1 in 5 people have consistent and uncontrollable coughs

It's not social rules stopping him joining a hiking group it is his own physical condition and attitude he can walk short distances without stopping only so he could join a wheelchair group or go hiking with support he decides not to nobody is stopping him by saying he is a pain in their arse. That is the difference. Many places have trampers for you to use such as the national trust properties.
Being thrown out because you have Touretts or any other disability is not the same and not the disabled person's choice to give something up. If you try taking a disabled person out you soon realise they are effectively banned from restaurants, public transport, shops, cinemas etc and have to go elsewhere. I'd say from every 3 shops there will be at least 1 where you can't get around in a wheelchair

Wanderingllama · 18/09/2023 10:02

Him insisting to be in activity which was not suitable would affect enjoyment of others and it would be a hight of entitlement. And the group would absolute chuck him out before the second hike.
Him finding suitable group would be the logical solution, yes.

Same way like someone who cannot help making loud noise or moving around has an option of autism friendly screenings in a cinema which allow noise, moving around etc...
