Just on the news - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-66817795

Week after week, there is something wrong with dogs (and the owners) today, I grew up with them and this never, ever happened. Maybe because dogs were treated as dogs and not trophy animals. Awful for everyone.

Crime scene

Man attacked by two dogs near school in Stonnall dies

A man suffers fatal injuries when attacked by two dogs in a street near a school in Staffordshire.

Of course it worked. Imagine how many deaths there would have been if they were still legal.

It didn't work because people still breed and own pit bulls despite them being illegal for over thirty years now.

How will XL bullies be any different?

HerAvatar · 17/09/2023 21:19

Only a few miles from that poor man being killed too SerendipityJane, I live locally and we have far too many of the wrong kind of owners round here.

Edited for spelling mistake

dawngreen · 17/09/2023 21:22

I have seen ppl with pit bulls like all dogs any that look like they have thick owners or ones that don't care we avoid with our dogs. And I grew up in a house with 7 dogs, which 3 were German Shepard dogs. The others were a Crossbreed, a King Charles, and 2 Yorkshire Terriers. One GSD had cancer of the spine, and he never reacted bad to me falling on him as a young child.

dawngreen · 17/09/2023 21:45

The advice I give regarding dog attacks: The best option is if you see a dog/dogs off the lead, and think they may react badly to you avoid them walk a different way.

I know its a hard thing to do but if a dog runs at you, if you cannot slip into a shop or some thing to avoid it. Try not to scream or wave your arms around panicking. It will make the dog ramp up the attack. If you stand still holding a bag or some thing in front of you. Stand near a bin any thing it will lose interest if you keep quiet hopefully. But if ppl start chucking stuff running around the dog will panic too. And all the better if near a bin where ppl chuck food left over chicken is better than you.

No law has ever worked 100%. Ever. Make them illegal = less of them = less deaths. We saw it work with the dangerous dogs act. The data speaks for itself.

By that logic there's no point in murder being illegal because it still happens every day.

The proposed change in the law would mean if you see one of these things unmuzzled, running loose, the owners could be confronted about it. Around here they would be. People are sick of feeling unsafe and worrying about whether their children are safe.

Pugdogmom · 18/09/2023 08:09

I love dogs and have 3, but I've said for ages that we need to get back to licensing dogs. Compulsory training, criminal record checks and laws like Spain or Calgary.
The amount of dogs bought during Lockdown with dickwad owners who have no idea how to train and look after their dogs and don't understand basic training or body language drives me insane!
My ( adult) daughter had my elderly well trained lurcher girl out for a walk yesterday. She was pootling around quite happily when my daughter saw another dog on a lead, so she immediately put our girl on a lead. Owner of other dog decided to let his dog interact with ours, and NEITHER dogs were happy, but Owner decided they would be " friends ". Ended up with my daughter having to get quite firm with dickwad Owner and ask him to take his dog away. My old girl doesn't bother with other dogs, she doesn't wish to engage either.
My middle dog doesn't bother either, but if dogs are in his face, he'll bark telling it to go away. Then we get " looks".
Compulsory dog training, a bit like getting a driving licence.

I prefer not to face them in public without a muzzle and lead though

Especially my dc, who won’t see them in anyone’s home

I understand that, i will and have crossed the street to avoid these types of dogs but many of these attacks and deaths happen in the home, involve children, who know no better, so i'd rather have these dogs destroyed, sad but its the only way to stop this scourge.

I've a German short haired pointer, plenty big enough, relatively soft mouthed and most importantly, can be dragged off someone if she ever did attack someone.

There is also no enforcement, have you ever tried contacting the council about anything at all from Friday afternoon to Monday morning?

111 can take hours to be answered and seeing a dog without a muzzle isn't a 999 call.

SerendipityJane · 18/09/2023 08:41

"could" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. The police "could" arrest shoplifters.

ChristopherTalken · 18/09/2023 10:03

I made the huge mistake of clicking the video of the attack on Ian Price.

My views are now that any animal that can overpower a grown man should be banned/culled/not for ownership.

Do you reckon you could drag it off? I’ve seen my little tiny French bulldog with the mop. I don’t think I could get in the way between her and it without getting injured when shes in full prey drive.

So would you ban labs, retrievers and other large gun dog breeds? Because they're pretty bloody powerful.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 18/09/2023 10:40

Not really - you're comparing two completely different things.

As it stands, XL bullies aren't even a defined/recognised breed so I'm not sure how the government actually plan to enforce any kind of ban or law surrounding them.

They cant overpower a grown adult tho can they? Strong but not stronger

I said I agree (without thinking properly).

No I wouldn't ban the dogs you have mentioned.

Has anybody ever been savaged by a Labrador? I wouldn't think so.

@ChristopherTalken you'd be surprised

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 18/09/2023 10:44

@PaulaZackMayo - yes. Labradors can and do attack, and they can do a lot of damage.

The government has been quite clear that step 1 is to define the breed. That is literally what they will do before enforcing a ban.
And no, it's not different in the slightest.

Fuckingfuming1 · 18/09/2023 10:48

Jesus, a colleague has just bought a cane Corso to live in a three bed semidetached in the home counties. A dog literally bred to defend cattle from Lions. Genius.

Am not denying they can do damage, I still have the scar from being bitten by a terrier as a child 30 years ago.

I'm pretty confident that my dogs wouldn't attack a child but I still would never leave mine alone with a child. They are animals at the end of the day and animals can be unpredictable. This is to protect the child and my dogs as I wouldn't want them to have to be put down.

Neither are pit bulls a recognised breed
