How bothered are you about Small Boats?

1000 replies

Spinet · 14/09/2023 11:19

I think the idea that people think Small Boats with illegal immigrants on them is a really pressing issue is made up by politicians to have something to campaign on. Am I right? Is this a pressing issue as far as you're concerned?

I'm not really talking about immigration/ asylum seekers in general, just the small boats everyone keeps mentioning. If you're worried about people dying in the channel I get that, but do you think people finding their way here illegally is a major issue for our country at the moment?

I think it's clear I don't but I will accept I'm wrong about this being a made up issue if the majority disagree with me.

If you want to vote YABU= this is one of my top ten concerns. YANBU = I don't think it's a top ten issue for the country.

"In the same way our court systems cleared the backlog. We had 24 hour courts, increased capacity.
I am sure that is the next step with a government that cares about the security of its people."

Crown Court backlog has gone up to record levels - increased to more than 64,000 (Eng & Wales). Barristers tell us many of those delayed will be bail cases ie no deadline as to when heard by so can be repeatedly adjourned & overtaken by remand/newer trials. They argue shortage..

of judges & barristers often contributing to delays. Govt says it aims to reduce backlog to 53,000 by March 2025. Recent FOI figures obtained by #Newsnight show some of those on remand been waiting years to have their cases heard. Justice delayed = justice denied

You must be tired of your boat being mentioned @jgw1 they're like a dog with a bone. 😂 Almost like... they have nothing of substance to say.

Ha we got all the glory of the log book

It was key at one point. Made me laugh after all the virtue signalling on people being selfish with their second homes

Lastchancechica · 14/09/2023 21:52

I am going to say this Labour have messed up very badly. This isn’t going to go down well with the public.

I could see from the pained look on the sky political analyst’s face conceding an Labour own goal.

Giving the EU the power to end truck loads more migrants was never going to work was it!

No one in the Labour Party are up to the job of even understanding what the public are looking for, much less delivering on it.

The number of jobs isn't a limited resource. Jobs are created all the time in response to the dynamic factors of available workforce and opportunities so this would provide an overall boost to the economy benefitting everyone

And yet only around 50% of refugees arriving in Germany find steady employment after 5 years;

49% of refugees who have come to Germany since 2013 were able to find steady employment within five years of arriving

I don’t know if people will still vote for them (probably) but it is a really dud deal

The problem won’t go away for them. They won’t be able to get rid of gangs, at all

Are the 24hour courts similar to it being illegal for a child to go to a GP without their parents?

Ie utter tosh?

I'm not that bothered about it either.

Have you found the link to where Starmer said he was in favour of uncontrolled migration yet?

Oddly i can't find anywhere he has said that.

@Lastchancechica
Mags courts you say...

They show 353,406 outstanding cases in the magistrates’ courts in July this year, up from 336,861 in July 2022.

In July 2022, there were 59,361 outstanding Crown Court cases, increasing to 64,015 in July this year.*

Yes well it’s a massive improvement on the original number in 2021.

We deserve a system that works.

Did the donkeys know what a woman is?

Actually, that's a good question - Yvette Cooper has a trans activist son (not transitioned?) and Stephen Kinnock (Labour's Shadow Immigration Minister) has a transgender son.

If the burden sharing is limited what number would you take and how would you deal with people arriving by boat outside it?

MsRosley · 14/09/2023 22:12

Efacsen · 14/09/2023 21:45

In a previous post you mentioned interpreters coming from Afghanistan by 'legal routes' to the UK As you'll know these skilled individuals had been employed by UK military and contractors sometimes for as long as 20 years and after the withdrawal from Kabul were major targets for the Taliban

Thus far these people have not been allowed to leave Afghanistan/been granted asylum here as there is no legal route

So their only way now is overland and then across the Channel - whilst they might be safe from the Taliban in France - their skills are in translating English not French and they believe that the UK owes them sanctuary because of their longstanding professional links to the UK military. That's why they don't stay in France or Italy or other 'safe counties'

Obviously not all the Afghans crossing the Channel are interpreters but this is their story - others who also worked with the UK military in different roles will have their own stories

Nope, wasn't me who brought Afghani interpreters into it, I was answering another poster. But that's interesting to know.

When Labour win the next General Election won't we have seen a decline in the Far Right, given that we currently have a fairly Far Right government?

Give over. Both Labour and the Conservatives are both generally very centrist.

Dymaxion · 14/09/2023 22:17

Can anyone explain why the small boat crossings were only approx 2,000 people for the year in 2019 and are now so much higher ? What have the Conservatives been doing about this for the last 4 years ?

Wait now, if we're doing bingo cards someone has to non-ironically wail about "wokie lefties". I love that one.

and 'if you care that much maybe you should take them in to your home'

Honestly I care about the people on small boats - risking their lives because they think the UK will treat them fairly. Incidentally - your OP is wrong - it's NOT illegal to enter the UK to claim asylum - it's perfectly legal

France is not as safe as people claim - look at the situation with homeless AS or the banning of head scarves etc

What IS wrong is the woeful underfunding of our immigration system and the lack of options to claim from anywhere but the UK

If people where processed quickly - claims would be settled, those not eligible sent back and those who are granted status and allowed to work

This government is negligent in it's treatment of people seeking asylum - it's cruel to keep people in limbo for 5+ years - and it's an issue of their making

Fizzology · 14/09/2023 22:23

YANBU. I am concerned on a humanitarian level (people dying, being trafficked) and I think the increase is a concern because it is poorly managed and planned. So sure, I agree there's a problem.

But no, it wouldn't crack the top ten of my concerns, and it's not even slightly the reason that NHS waiting lists are growing and housing is unaffordable and reliance on food banks has gone through the roof and crimes against women and girls are not prosecuted.

Look at the Med and numbers arriving in Italy and across Mexico border

It’s not unique to U.K.

I take it you have not found the link to this fabled speech by Sir Keir Starmer where he said he favours uncontrolled migration?
