To think that gut health will become a huge focus in the next decade?

I'm seeing more and more people looking for ways to improve their gut health.

I have endo and going GF has been one of the most helpful things pain wise.

AIBU to think we're on the cusp of a gut health revolution here? Fingers crossed that it will drive companies to come up with better tasting GF food as well as some of it is dreadful!

Anyone?

It's already been talked about

I don't predict any more 'focus' on it than we have now tbh

Daddydog · 14/09/2023 18:17

100% - your gut is your second brain. Partner works in food innovation and it's something which brands are trying to get their heads around. Takes the big brands ages to shift their businesses on growing trends but it's all over their radar! Half the time it's due to production, a GF/Vegan production line is hard to achieve using their existing factories. I'm GF and Dairy Free and she launched and designed her companies first GF/Vegan innovation which focused on gut benefits. However as it's made in current facilities they can't state any of those benefits!

Adding kefir to my daily diet has actually cured my eczema.

I suffered with it for years, nothing helped. Tried different moisturisers and steroid creams, they worked during the course, but as soon as I stopped using them it flared again. it really affected my life day to day.

I started having kefir for breakfast every day and in around 6 weeks my skin felt normal! Completely normal!

It recently came back a few days after starting a course of antibiotics and took around 4 weeks after finishing the antibiotics to subside again.

I had though benificial gut bacteria was a load of nonsense until this!

Stupendousseptember · 14/09/2023 20:03

@BeautifulGnome what kefir please

Bananaaa · 14/09/2023 20:05

@BeautifulGnome I should try kefir. My baby son developed eczema after taking antibiotics and it was awful keeping it under control for months and months, even the highest dose steroid cream did little for it. I started giving him probiotic powder in his milk and it completely cleared up very quickly and touch wood hasn’t come back!

Onthelastdayofseptember · 14/09/2023 20:05

Yes - really taking off in the mental health field as well - impact of gut health on emotional wellbeing/ anxiety etc. I think focus on diet as a treatment will really come more onto focus - not much disseminated about it at present

BeautifulGnome · 14/09/2023 20:10

@Stupendousseptember

I have a natural yoghurt kefir, I don't care which brand. Yeo valley, Bioful, Asda's own brand all seem to work for me. They have around 14 different strains of live bacteria, some brands slightly more or less.

I have half a pot a day, topped with berries or chopped grapes to make it a bit sweeter

BeyondMyWits · 14/09/2023 20:14

Omeprazole, lansoprazole, PPIs etc may just come out as big bad boys in the gut health/acid wars... like ranitidine.

Combusting · 14/09/2023 20:14

I honour my south Asian heritage by making Lassi out of kefir, cold water, ice cubes and ….. depending on whether I fancy savoury I add chaat masala and pinch rock salt or if I fancy sweet - mango pulp for mango lassi. Kefir is amazing! I lived on it in last years heatwave with ridiculous amounts of ice for the lassis!

ricecakesareshit · 14/09/2023 20:15

Yes I totally think this will become much more important and talked about.

Tim Spector is everywhere right now. Never heard of gut micro biome until this year.

Now I try and have fermented foods each day and have heavily reduced UPF.

SnowflakeCity · 14/09/2023 20:15

It's very trendy right now isn't it? Just like the Atkinson diet or that caveman diet people were doing, each swears to be the thing that will make everyone healthier and happier. Who knows what will be in fashion in 10years time, these things tend to have a somewhat limited lifespan as the next person that wants to make their fortune pushes their 'life changing' diet, all backed by facts and research you know.

Stupendousseptember · 14/09/2023 20:17

@Bananaaa

Can you say which probitotuc powder please

Oysterbabe · 14/09/2023 20:18

Yes I think awareness is growing.
I'm being careful not to eat emulsifiers as they can fuck up gut health.

Stupendousseptember · 14/09/2023 20:18

@BeyondMyWits..

Do you mean as in harmful or helpful. N
My dh has to have omerplole every day

TowerRaven7 · 14/09/2023 20:18

Yes. Cutting out wheat cut down my migraines 95%!

HangingOver · 14/09/2023 20:20

Yeah I think there's truth in this. There's always a THING. Usually costs money.

Whereas the actual key to a good diet is boring old veggies 😂

Stupendousseptember · 14/09/2023 20:21

@BeautifulGnome thank you!. Sometimes like probiotics there can be a huge range of stuff and powders etc

I reckon harmful. They are being used so much to cut acid production to protect the stomach, with no real thought as to the consequent gut issues further down in our systems. (I am on lansoprazole for ever due to aspirin for heart issues, my gut health is suffering).

thebellagio · 14/09/2023 20:35

Absolutely. I’m a few weeks into my Zoe nutrition trial and the impact of eating food that’s right for my gut, my blood sugar and my blood fat has been phenomenal.

I personally think that’s the way things will go - towards a more personalised approach to health, rather than a generic, one size fits all approach. My Zoe scores have taught me that everything I thought I was doing “right” is in fact wrong for me, for example, I should limit how often I eat watermelon - that’s not a snack you would normally say to avoid if your trying to manage your weight,

Stupendousseptember · 14/09/2023 20:42

@thebellagio

Could you share some of your diet please!

lljkk · 14/09/2023 20:55

Meh. All I hear in recent years about gut health and wellbeing is lots of speculation, speculative correlation & speculative mechanisms leading to speculative outcomes. Precious little proof about which actions lead to specific benefits, beyond the extreme situations (eg., people who need fecal transplants).

I find it hilarious every time I hear kefir talked about as superfood. It's obvious sugary junk food to me.

BeautifulGnome · 14/09/2023 21:11

@lljkk I would have climbed on that hill of yours and died with you there a year ago. I was incredibly cynical. All I can say is that it's helped me.

Also I'm sure flavoured kefir has added sugar, but the natural yogurt type stuff I buy is just milk and bacteria. It's 4.2g sugar and 78 kcal per 100g

What form did you take it in? What brand? I'll give anything a go for my eczema.

Gloxinia · 14/09/2023 21:14

If it helped my eczema I wouldn't care if it was sugary junk food
