People not paying on the bus

I work in a country that has free public transport.

Many people commute from the surrounding 3 countries. There is a flat rate of 3€ one way, 5€ return whether you are 30km or 100m from the border when you get on the bus. You can also buy monthly and annual tickets at a much cheaper rate - I have an annual ticket that works out around 1€ a day.

A woman got on the bus this morning, driver asked for her ticket. She said but it’s free. He said no, you have to pay. Massive argument because the bus stop is only 150m from the border but the next bus stop in the other country is 750m away. So he told her to walk over the border and get her free bus if she wasn’t going to pay. Then she claimed she had no cash to pay. She then found some cash but in the meantime had held up an already late bus by 5 minutes. She’s obviously been getting away with it for a long time and if you work in the other country you won’t be getting a shit salary (minimum wage is €2,200 per month). I had cash but there was no way I was going to pay for her.

AIBU that this annoys me when people do not pay their way and get in an argument over it.
