To end my love affair with Ariel?

I always used Ariel wash powder. Smells good, (well at least it used to) obviously cleans well, kind to skin (mild eczema) etc etc.
£9 a box, then £10, then £11 now some revamped easy dissolve stuff at £13.50 for less washes ?? Taking the absolute piss !

So I finally did it. I admit I dallied with Aldi own brand in covid when I only used one shop for everything. Convinced myself it wasn’t as good as Ariel.

£3.95 for 40 washes. Just under 10p a wash compared to nearly 21p a wash with Ariel. Got the lavender and jasmine stuff. Well, it smells great! Cleans brilliantly and no itchy skin.

Anyone else took the plunge?

We use some non bio stuff that we buy from home bargains and it smells nicer than a lot of the branded stuff.

Blingstar · 12/09/2023 21:19

Has anyone got a product that can clean white socks (that DD parades around in, even outdoors, and drives me insane)?

WhatAPalaverer · 12/09/2023 21:22

Aldi box powder at half the recommended dose. No softener or animal fat bead things. All clean and no smell!

TedWilson · 12/09/2023 21:25

Well I had been using Wilko liquid , 3 for £7. I guess that love affair is over. 😢

Did anyone else open this thinking it was going to be a Disney debate?

I thought it was something to do with The Tempest.

I have used Aldi or Lidl for years - prefer liquid to powder.
Also, I use about half the quantity they state on the bottle (& decant it into a bottle with a pump top dispenser - the original bottles have tops that are far too wide.

LindorDoubleChoc · 12/09/2023 21:30

I prefer Lidl Formil but I expect they're quite similar apart from the scent. I've never used Ariel.

DanceMumTaxi · 12/09/2023 21:38

I also used to use Ariel, but stopped a few years ago due to price increases. I use surf liquid or Daz now. Have both on the go and switch between the two depending on the load. I know Daz is really old fashioned, but it cleans so well. Never going back to Ariel, it’s too expensive.

UnctuousUnicorns · 12/09/2023 21:44

Think about it, have you stood close to someone (obviously malodorous, unwashed people aside), and thought, "Omg, I bet that cheap minger uses supermarket own brand laundry detergent instead of a branded one!" I mean, has anyone ever actually been able to tell?

There's my answer.

CharityJane · 12/09/2023 21:51

Have used Tesco own brand for years as it’s the only one that doesn’t make me itchy. I’ve noticed in the past that some of the branded detergents create a sort of force field around me - anyone I touch gets a static shock.

DanceMumTaxi · 12/09/2023 21:57

Do people find the own brand stuff cleans as well? I talking grass stained cricket whites, muddy footie/rugby kit, spilled pasta sauce etc. Not just lightly worn.

happyinherts · 12/09/2023 22:05

I think I've used every branded detergent on offer over the years, but since the opening of Lidl nearby have stuck to their Formil liquid and have been pleasantly surprised re cost and quality.

Muddy football kits do get soaked in a bucket with soda crystals beforehand though.

domesticgodmess · 12/09/2023 22:05

I think some of the branded detergents probably do a better job at cleaning, if you have clothes dirty enough for it to matter.
If your clothes are just 'used' dirty rather than minging or smelly most of the cheaper products are fine, and some might be equivalent. Or better if Ariel really has got that bad.

I mainly use Fairy for the DC laundry, started when DC1 was born and was surprised and impressed with how good it was on stains. I use a mix of Lidl Formil, smol and Persil with the occasional random supermarket brand or on offer product. I don't reduce the dose on the cleaning product , I tried that and the washing didn't seem fresh enough but I do use a big less softener.

venusandmars · 12/09/2023 22:06

Not the same, but I stopped using Fairy liquid when the 'original' got a new improved fragrance. The whole point of original was that it just smelled of washing up liquid, not apple or lavender or toilet cleaner!

Mirabai · 12/09/2023 22:11

Ariel smells like toilet freshener - seriously vile. I use Bio-D.

Sauvblanctime · 12/09/2023 22:13

Really thought you meant Disney for a minute 🤣🤣🤣

Aldi stuff is amazing!

dementedpixie · 12/09/2023 22:16

I'd prefer if Aldi did it in bigger boxes

Gro · 12/09/2023 22:18

Branded washing liquid is my last luxury in this increasingly expensive world! Good to know there are cheaper 'just as good' options. When my Surf tropical lily runs out I will give Aldi a go.

cherryassam · 12/09/2023 22:18

I have almost always used Ariel because it’s what my mum used and I am used to it but the prices are really making me think. And it rarely seems to be on offer now either.

I’m anxious to do so because I have mild-moderate eczema and allergies - last time I tried to switch to something cheaper (Sainsburys own brand) I was fine for a week or so and then came out in hives across my whole body which lasted on and off for several months even when I stopped using the offending product.

I'm sure aldi has a tropical version too

Beaverbridge · 12/09/2023 22:23

I've switched to Sainsbury own. Comes in a tetrapak type container. Bio, non bio and one for colours. Smells amazing.

Haffiana · 12/09/2023 22:26

I have always used Ariel liquid as nothing came close to it for getting stains out of coloured items, but they changed the scent some months ago and it STINKS. It smells like dried out vomit. It is utterly foul. I just cannot bear it, and I cannot even bear to be near other people who have used it for their clothes.

So that is the end of my years-long Ariel love affair.

For items that do not need a bio wash I use Costco laundry powder. A 400 wash tub lasts me a couple of years easily - you only need a tablespoon or two at the most. Far cheaper than any supermarket powder and washes brilliantly.

Flakey99 · 12/09/2023 22:43

I've used Aldi washing powder for years. No more than half a scoop for a full wash as you don't need any more than that.

Theroom · 12/09/2023 22:56

I really like Ariel bio. I tried a cheaper brand and it didn't clean well. I also tried Fairy non-bio and it took me a while to work out why my DC started getting horrible rashes in the pant area and I was itchy down below too. Has gone away since going back to Ariel.

I buy it in bulk online though / hunt for offers.

JadeSeahorse · 12/09/2023 22:56

Exactly the same here.

I always use the coconut crush powder along with laundry disinfectant and a touch of fabric conditioner and only wash coloureds at 20 degrees/whites at 30 degrees and towels at 40 degrees.
Everything comes out spotless and smells really fresh.

perenniallymessy · 13/09/2023 10:18

I tend to buy giant boxes and bottles of Ariel or Persil washing powder (for whites) and liquid (for colours) from Costco when on offer as they work out the same price as Aldi/Lidl usually. But I have got a box of Aldi's powder on the go at the moment and it seems ok.

I'm normally completely happy with generic brands, but after finding that Aldi dishwasher tablets left lots more stains in my cups than Fairy I'm being loyal to Fairy.
